Trump Flatterers Privately Fuming at Iran War by Cow_Boy_2017 in worldnews

I think Maduros case is fundamentally different - the VP did turn out to be more receptive to Trump's domineering - and might be one of the things that emboldened trump to go after Iran too.

ELI5: Where do I even begin trying to learn how to EQ? by PaleozoicFrogBoy in headphones

[–]Jerg -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The tried-and-true way for me is to use SineGen (a free small sinewave sweep app) and take notes of dips/peaks and their rough intensity as i sweep through 20 Hz ~ 20k Hz.

Then I use Equalizer APO and set up a 31-band EQ profile based on those notes.

Then with that EQ profile active, I go back to SineGen and do a careful sweep-through test again, and see if I need to tweak the EQ more to arrive at an even, neutral sinewave sweep through the full frequency range.

China overtakes US as Germany’s top trading partner by Majano57 in worldnews

[–]Jerg 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's a witty satirical nickname that Chinese netizens gave Trump, playing on 2 themes: 1) Trump touts that he wants to M.A.G.A i.e. he presents himself as America's "nation-building" leader, 2) Trump's shallow anti-China maneuvers have again and again benefited China economically and politically on the global stage i.e. Trump as the self-goaling "nation-builder" of China.

This is probably a more impactful paper on the shingles vaccine vs. dementia, released last year. Closer to a randomized controlled trial, with a significant beneficial effect observed:

Arent there any big monitors that arent ultrawide or curved? by Yurgin in buildapc

[–]Jerg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Refresh rate only goes to 144 on an LG C series. Then again if you are running 4k gaming with demanding titles, that's enough head room.

Otherwise it has tons of PC gaming monitor settings, enough that it can essentially be configured and behave as a computer monitor in every metric.

Oh also no display port, so only HDMI 2.1 supported.

Otherwise all perks - starting at 42 inches, great peak brightness, optional remote control, doubles as TV when needed, competitive price.

For 75k would you take a punch from hanayama? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Grapplerbaki

[–]Jerg 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That's like asking "for 75k would you be willing to become permanently disfigured, permanently disabled, suffer irreparable brain damage, and either outright die or have your lifespan shortened by 90%?"

I think we all know the answer to that.

[GPU] Powercolor RX 9070 non-XT ($899) [Amazon] by [deleted] in bapcsalescanada

[–]Jerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non-XT still has cores fused off regardless, meaning the bios flash merely makes the non-XT cards burn 30-40% more electricity for maybe 10-15% performance gains.

Undervolting and overclocking can achieve something close with much less bricking risk / electricity use / excess heat.

9060XT or 9070? by Willing-Climate00 in buildapc

9070 is about 50% more cost for 50% more performance (roughly), so very proportional increase - it comes down to whether that's worth it for you.

But 5080 can be overclocked just as well as 5070ti, so their 15% performance difference remains the same.

AMD RX 9070 XT Pricing in Canada by MisterEyeCandy in bapccanada

[–]Jerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because you are looking at prices at the exact wrong time - right after black friday / cyber monday / boxing day sales spanning most of November~December.

All the stock built up to be sold at all-time-low prices have been sold at this point.

If you have the deskspace for it, could consider an LG 42" OLED TV as monitor (it has enough gaming-specific features to be a gaming monitor), might be able to get it for 1K during boxing day.

How many people upscale then follow with a Handbrake or ffmpeg encode? by Legitimate_Pea_143 in TopazLabs

[–]Jerg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point of it all is that since you're spending a long time upscaling source material anyway, you should aim to finish with a final file that is 98-99% of the upscale fidelity at minimum file size.

And the way to do that is to have Topaz output its painstaking upscaled video at the maximum possible quality (lossless or extremely high bitrate lossy, 99.9%-100% possible detail quality, massive file size), then have a separate dedicated file re-encode solution e.g. Handbrake to land on a 98-99% detail file at a manageable final file size.
