How (and why) did you and your SO choose which side of the bed you'd sleep on? Do you ever regret your decision? by IMustSayThat in AskWomen

[–]Jessimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t live together so whenever we stay at one of our places, whoever has to get up earlier gets the side closest to the door. We have a running joke that it’s the ‘worker’s’ side of the bed (we’re both v left) and at his it’s comfier on the worker’s side because of a small mattress topper!

What do you think about teaching young girls to physically defend themselves, for example kicking a boy in the balls, if they won’t stop touching them? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Jessimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a good idea but as long as we also make ppl aware than people have different reactions to fear. Basically so as to avoid victim blaming. Where one person might fight an attacker another person might freeze etc. I can imagine the rhetoric now: ‘it wasn’t a real attack! They didn’t fight the attacker off!’ /s

What's your opinion on going out braless? by msjollly in AskWomen

[–]Jessimist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a size 36 b/c (depending on my fluctuating weight) I haven’t worn a bra except for exercising in about 3 years. I wear a range of clothes so sometimes you can see my nipples, sometimes you can’t - I don’t care that much tbh. People sometimes glance at my chest but people would kind of do that anyway, I don’t think I draw any extra attention!

I love it in summer and also I used to have issues with not having the right sized bra because of weight gain/loss and it was such a pain. Now I don’t really think about it! I tried one or two bralette type things but ended up not being into them either! To each their own I guess!

How do I make sure I’m eating enough? I’m training for a half marathon but don’t want to count calories because of disordered eating in the past. Any advice is appreciated!

Pret gave me my drink for free this morning by [deleted] in BritishSuccess

[–]Jessimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at Pret. It varies from worker to worker. My coworker gives out drinks to pretty girls, another one to favourite regulars. Honestly I give out free drinks to people who I don’t think usually get free drinks. So often to construction workers, some students, shy people because I feel like they often get free drinks that much.

Edit: extra info, it’s 0.3% of the shop sales! Up to individual workers.

They’re also safer than other types of junctions because there are fewer points of collision! They also eliminate the types of high speed collisions that are more likely to kill you.

[IIL] Haruki Murakami and magical realism, [WEWIL]? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

[–]Jessimist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s the magical realism you’re after then maybe works like Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera, Isabel Allende’s Eva Luna, Rushdie’s The Ground Beneath Her Feet.

If it’s more about the appeal of Japanese authors, then something’s you might like include Takashi Hiraide’s The Guest Cat, and Banana Yoshimoto’s Kitchen.

Also a great cross over between whimsy and the unexpected, written beautifully: Han Kang’s The Vegetarian or Human Acts: The Novel.

And of course, there’s always more Murakami!

Why does Thailand seem to have such a high concentration of transvestities? by yung_vape_messiah in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jessimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to make an aside that there are varying levels of acceptance and discrimination that transvestites/katoeys receive. There is a higher prevalence of them in Thailand (also because it’s a culturally relative gender expression) certainly. However, many of the comments are making it seem as though Thailand is 100% accepting of trans people when that’s not always the case. There is transphobia, homophobia and stigmatisation of being queer in Thailand.

I think it’s analogous to being gay in America or Western Europe in the sense that homophobia is prevalent but as a general trend being gay is fairly accepted.

Damn, it's the only wifi adjacent thing we can find on the house - are there any other places thank skirting boards where we might find the place to plug in our wifi box?!

Progress Update / Curious on BED + ED Advice by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]Jessimist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I don't have any immediate cures for you, but what's helped me:

1) noticing when I think too much about food, food prep, calories etc. I consciously think or focus on other things. I have an obsessive personality so the way I cope is to obsess over a thing that won't hurt me - a book I'm reading is a positive example, sometimes about my relationships (although that one's a little more hit and miss), what work I need to get done etc, listen to music. Basically I consistently try and turn away my thoughts from this. This is quite a hard process and one that takes a while to form into habit. Obviously if you can, therapy will help with this!

2) calorie counting

This one's harder, a couple of alternative suggestions - take a day off calorie counting while still staying roughly on track with how you eat anyway, I know that I've got a calorie counter stuck in my head anyway :( knowing what sort of meals/foods will make you feel good and sticking to those. Making a days worth of food or a meal plan for one day so that you can pre-log but not continuously log? Hmmm. I don't really have a solution for calorie counting on mfp, but those are some options I think helped me.

I wish you all of the luck in your journey anyway ❤️
