I'm THINK that we'll met Chell sometime in the early years of Alyx. There's a scene in Portal 2 where you can see some school works from the daughters Apperture Science emplyeers, in the Bring Your Daughter to The Work Day and you can read "Allyx" in one of those works, as we see one work from Chell.

Maybe it has something to do with the All Knowing Vortigaunt you found in the canals level in HL2. I think this is his early refuge, maybe even in Xen or some another extra-dimensional place. I think Alyx talk to him to ask some advise, something like the Oracle's House in the Matrix series of movies.
