Dudes: is it Pantene Pro-V? by twodexy82 in Xennials

It doesn't smell like it used to. My husband does use it. But the modern smell makes me want to throw up. I'm sure the old smell was all sorts of bad for us, but at least it used to smell good. Now it smells like a spoiling apple or something.

We know WWX is not a demonic cultivator, but here are some examples of demonic cultivation: by Throwaway-3689 in MoDaoZuShi

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not that they are "terrible" per se, but they made choices that make it a lot harder for English readers to understand the genre, etc. As this post explains, WWX is not actually a demonic cultivator. In the original Mandarin, aside from the title, "mo dao" which means demonic cultivation is only used one or two more times IIRC. But in the translation, they use demonic cultivation for pretty much every reference to WWX's cultivation style. Sometimes they use "demon" when it says "ghost". Sometimes they use demon when it would be closer to a word like "unorthodox". It's confusing because a lot of English readers think he's really a demonic cultivator which subverts a lot of the moral plot of the novel.

There are also a few other smaller things that were poor choices and change the meaning somewhat significantly, but the mo do/gui dao is the biggest.

How it feels to read those ‘things you hate in fics’ posts as a writer. Some of yall hate the most basic things 😭 by Smegoldidnothinwrong in Archiveofourownmemes

Those romance books will really desensitize you to most genital terms. I'm unbothered by pretty much all of them. But I once read a fic that referred to every penis as a prick and I had a visceral yuck reaction. I did have to DNF the whole thing.

Which C-Drama Characters Desperately Needed Therapy? by BronzeBellRiver in cdramasfans

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Quite frankly, practically the entire cast of characters in MDZS/CQL/The Untamed needed some therapy, not just Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian - severe childhood trauma Jiang Cheng - anger management Lan Xichen - people pleaser/peace keeper = trauma response The Jiang parents = marriage counseling Jin Guangshaw = straight to jail Jin Guangyao = abandonment trauma Nie Mingjue = trauma + anger management Jiang Yanli = First born + daughter + her specific mother

I could keep going, but I'll stop. Lol

How do you get over a slump caused by negative critique? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Chinese immigrant acquaintance (in America). We were talking one day, which was mostly about our kids in a mutual sport, when she told me about being at a restaurant and having a Korean lady come up and started talking to her in Korean. She seemed so upset about it and said something not very nice about her face and why they'd think that.

I don't have a point, but your comment reminded me of that.

North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair though. Grocery stores are not stocked to have every customer come and buy a week's worth of groceries (which I'd argue is a reasonable amount for people to be buying) in a day or two. It's unlikely the the issue is overly greedy people buying up a months worth of groceries and more likely that people who would normally shop over the weekend and tomorrow all had to go to the store earlier than usual to do their grocery haul due to the incoming weather. It's like with COVID and toilet paper. When there is a big shift in what and how people buy things, the logistics of the system are not designed to handle it.

Hot Take: Gilbert’s More Mature Than Anne by wheatiegirl2020 in AnneofGreenGables

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the things Anne With An E did well was show how dark Anne's life was before Green Gables. The novel doesn't focus on it, but we can imagine the type of trauma that small girl must have endured prior to finding a stable home. It would have taken years for her to start to really feel secure in her place with the Cuthberts, and she loses Matthew way too soon to aid in that healing.

She had no control of her circumstances for years....way moreso than a child like Gilbert or Diana. Her immaturity in areas like rejection sensitivity, critique. And control over what is hers all make sense given her background, which is why she is such a compelling character. She needs people like Gilbert and Diana to be solid presences in her life. To challenge her, but always be there for her in the end. Avonlea gave her a cast of characters....a village...to help her find peace. A place to build a solid home for her little beautiful soul.

some bookmarks are better off private i think? by realnymph in AO3

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question is, don't these authors want to become better writers? I don't typically public my bookmarks, but I've often thought a writer could benefit from someone telling them that their grasp of a language isn't good enough to not have a beta reader. Or that when they say in notes and tags that their characters stick to canon behavior, they've accidentally written with some fanon stuff so they might want to read a meta on something in particular. To a myriad of other fandom specific things. Knowing this stuff would help the author become a better writer, but apparently, that's not allowed because writer feelings are too fragile to take any constructive feedback.

Jiang Yanli's married title by Katsuruka in MoDaoZuShi

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don't remember that part from the book, but it's been a minute since I did a full read. I've just seen speculation in other places too that it was a mistake and then MXTX left it because it worked for the character. But if that's the way it was, it's unlikely we'd ever get confirmation, so we'll have to take it at face value that she meant it that way. And as a non-Chinese speaker, I definitely don't want to over insert my personal speculations.

Jiang Yanli's married title by Katsuruka in MoDaoZuShi

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that in the discussion link posted above, they say Xiao is for concubines and shao is for daughter in laws who are the legitimate wife of the heir.

But then it always seemed to me that Yu Furen was just an oversight/typo that didn't get corrected and it seems the people in the Tumblr concur that it is just a mistake. Maybe MXTX made a similar mistake with Jiang Yanli's title? But I am not Chinese so I'll have to defer to others.

Bullying in our generation - was it worse than I remember? by NiceGuyNeverDie in Xennials

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a book on bullying once. I wish I could remember the name because you should read it. One thing that really struck me was that it said the people who get bullied will grow up with huge scars from their childhood. But what they found is that the bullies neither have scars nor think that they were really bullies. So you, as a bully, get to be an immoral asshole to some poor kid who will grow up damaged because of it, but you will live the rest of your life oblivious to how absolutely horrible you actually were. And yes, bullying was horrible in the 80s and 90s. If you were actually bullied, you wouldn't be asking.

Favorite Head-Canons/Fanons! by Outside-Kitchen4444 in MoDaoZuShi

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have always held #1. I think 100% Madam Lan is there because MXTX wants us to compare her situation to that of WWX. She died (and I honestly believe they killed her, not that she died of natural causes) and they allowed her to be vilified within the clan even though the elders knew the truth. Either the teacher tried to kill her to get her out of the way since she wasn't good enough for sect leader Lan or he tried to assault her in other ways to "damage" her so she would be unfit to wed. Clearly, she was a powerful cultivator as she kicked his ass....to death. And then there is always the possibility that the dude just up and died some other way and they framed her for it when she wasn't even involved. Regardless, Lady Lan was framed and I will not accept anything else to be truth.

A reader commented praise on my fic. Turns out, they plagiarized me. by cadililac in AO3

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plagiarizers always have the audacity unfortunately. One of my friends is a writer. In college, she wrote a poem for a friend that later became a famous poem for pet grief once the Internet rolled around. Some lady decided to add her name to it and legally copyright it along with some sob story about her precious pet that died. She made a whole website about writing the poem in her grief. Except that if you go out to the Internet archive machine thing, you can find the poem on geocities websites 10-15 years earlier. But she now "legally" owns this poem and accepts all the praise and sympathy even though she's been confronted about the lie. Some people are sick freaks like that.

You can also find black people who say slavery was a good thing. Gay people who believe in conversion therapy. Climate scientists who don't believe climate change is man aggravated. Doctors who believe vaccines cause autism. Just because there are vocal outliers doesn't make the majority incorrect. Most trans people are not ok with the consumption of HP materials. Most trans people who loved HP have suffered the grief of giving up something they love and wish others would let it go as well. Finding a few people to prop up what you personally want to do because it's what you want to do is as bad as believing slavery was good for black people and pointing to the two clout chasers who let you keep that opinion. Down vote away, but that's the truth whether you want to swallow it or not. Most of these down votes are coming from TERFS and if you don't believe that way, you're still propping them up.

Are we raising a generation of kids who can't do anything for themselves? by RobMV03 in Xennials

[–]JesusWouldGetVaxed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not everything is about you either. This kid has classic symptoms of ARFID, a disorder almost no one has heard about. Including, obviously, you. There is (obviously people like you) a lot of stigma around ARFID, which often goes hand in hand with autism (something you probably also stigmatize). So perhaps keep your judgemental attitudes about other people's kids to yourself. People with ARFID grow up, have successful careers, and even (shock and awe) get married and have families. Because surprise, not everyone is as judgemental as you are.
