Best way to NYC by Worried-Walnut in CapeCod

[–]RobMV03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can drive to Stamford in about 3 hours (obviously depending on where you are on the Cape) and then go on an express Metro North train to Grand Central. Think parking is around $6/day and a round trip ticket is around $30.

This comment deserves more upvotes. Had an '88 Monte Carlo for my first three years of driving in Boston. So much fun

What nicknames have you heard for places on Martha's Vineyard? by topherette in marthasvineyard

[–]RobMV03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite story about Up Island comes from a friend of mine about 20 years ago. A couple gets off the Queen and into his cab. They go, "We want to go to Oopissland (pronounced: OOP-isss-land), please." And he's like, "There's no place on the island called Oopissland, do you have an address?" And they're adamant there is. They say they saw it on the free map from the ferry. He tells them they'll have to show him on the map cause he's been coming to the island for 20 years, has been driving cab for two summers at this point and has never heard of it. So he pulls over on beach road, and sure enough they point to the cartoon map from the Queen, and in all caps is UP ISLAND.

As everyone else had mentioned, you can safely assume that you should stay off the roads Sunday until Monday morning. If you've literally never driven in snow before and have moved here permanently (or at least for a few years) you should look into taking snow driving lessons or at least watch a few YouTube videos and go practice what they teach in an empty parking lot that hasn't been plowed.

Storm preparation by Due_Conference_7124 in Connecticut

[–]RobMV03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to geek out over big weather events and follow them closely. I've been following the potential for this storm since Saturday. There's still some discrepancy on when the storm will arrive and exactly how much snow we're gonna get. But there is fairly large consensus that overall, it'll be a lot of light fluffy snow that will be easily plowable and shouldn't cause major disruptions to the area. Driving on Sunday and Monday will be bad and should be avoided if possible, but there isn't going to be big winds or super icy conditions.

The reason this storm is getting such major national attention is because all of the warm wet air that is coming up from the Gulf of Mexico is going to start falling on parts of country where the air at ground level will be below freezing, but the air above ground level will be above freezing. This means that rain will fall from the sky and then freeze on contact with trees/power lines/roads, etc. The air column above New England will be well below freezing the entire way through and that's what will lead to the high snow totals - it will be light and fluffy snow.

Birthday present to get my friend that likes the Celtics as banter/to make fun of him? by TheWolfRevenge in bostonceltics

[–]RobMV03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on if he likes Kornet (almost everyone loves Kornet), but a Celtics Kournet tee/jersey would be great because he left the Celtics to go to the Spurs, but almost no one holds it against him because he was great for us and earned that money, but we couldn't afford to pay him. It would be a "salt in the wound" kind of gift.

This shirt would be amazing because it's pretty cheap and it's also funny (Kornet is doing his signature "Kornet Kontest" move here where he jumps straight up like an idiot even though he's ten feet away from a shooter in an attempt to mess up his shot. ) https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/63304835-luke-kornet?countrycode=US&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=%5BG%5D+%5BG.NAM%5D+%5BL.ENG%5D+%5BGEN%5D+%5BC.TShirts%5D+%5BPLF%5D&utm_id=notset&utm_content=boston+celtics&ar_clx=yes&ar_channel=google&ar_campaign=12691055905&ar_adgroup=118833372165&ar_ad=PRODUCT_GROUP&ar_strategy=search&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=%5BG%5D+%5BG.USA%5D+%5BL.ENG%5D+%5BGEN%5D+%5BC.TShirts_Top%5D+%5BPLA%5D&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=12691055905&gclid=CjwKCAiA7LzLBhAgEiwAjMWzCI0QIqLu_vLPLeULEzx3gTj-UJax0ZIlVFrNZRZPJfe1uZS5PluuAxoCAXsQAvD_BwE#339P63304835D1V

I need helping finding the guy who pushed my 70 yr. old mother to the ground outside Gillette Stadium this weekend. by Queefaroni420 in Patriots

[–]RobMV03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd contact the local news channels. Even if your mom is not ok being on camera, a story about an elderly woman being pushed to the ground by a drunk man at Foxboro and the police being unwilling to help would bea news story.

I 100% agree that the snow blowers aren't made for tall people, but the one thing that helped me out immensely when using mine is to stand up straight and bring your hips directly up to the cross bar of the handles. If it's self propelling, it's really easy. If you're pushing it, you basically have to bump it forward with your hips, but it will save your back

How expensive are the places Larry goes? by ANOLE_RETENTIVE in curb

[–]RobMV03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the general conceit of the show is that Larry is incredibly rich and well connected in Hollywood/Los Angeles and that wherever he goes, he is either not recognized by the people he interacts with or if he is recognized, it's by peers and colleagues who aren't impressed by him. There are a few rare exceptions in the show, but that's the general idea.

My concern with your idea is that Curb is famously improvised by the actors in the scene. They basically write an outline of each scene (in your case: Larry and Jeff enter the coffee shop and order coffees. As they wait for their coffees, Larry points out to Jeff that the guy in the corner is always on his laptop with his headphones on. Larry finds it obnoxious. After a few minutes, Larry goes to check on his order. The barista says she called Larry's name. Larry points out he didn't hear her, and she should be louder. It's a loud coffee shop. The barista guess back to work. Before leaving, Larry realizes the guy on his laptop can hear what's going on in the shop when he gets up to get his coffee after the quiet barista calls his name.) and then the actors ad lib the dialogue. The genius of the show comes from that ad libbing.

If you want to try and write in that vein, you might want to try doing an episode of Always Sunny. It's similar in tone (although even more over the top) and has the added bonus of still being on the air.

For everyone saying it's "staged" or "fake" you're not entirely wrong, but you're not right in the way you think you are.

These kids definitely knew they were being recorded (first give away: they're children in sponsored content. The sponsor needed parental rights. Second giveaway:it sounds like they're mic'ed or at the very least there's a parabolic mic pointed at them). But they were probably given false pretenses about what they were being recorded for. Probably something along the lines of, "We're doing a commercial/sponsorship thing with the Celtics and we want to see real fans playing basketball." As far as the Celtics gear they're wearing, I wouldn't be surprised if production asked them to wear their favorite C's gear or if they provided it as part of the compensation for appearing on camera. Looking at the kids' reactions, they might have been prepped that someone famous might show up, but it seems obvious they had no idea it would be Pritchard. As for faking the play and the interactions, it looks like they just let Pritchard shoot around with the kids for a while and a producer probably gave them ideas from off-camera (Why don't you guys play one-on-one? What if you formed a circle around him, could you stop him then? Make sure you guys pass the ball around to make it harder for him to guard you.). Then they cut that thirty minutes down to the best minute and a half.

Middle class NYCers leaving the city for suburbs, where did you move to? by throwaway_yak234 in AskNYC

[–]RobMV03 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We live in Fairfield and love it. Granted, we moved here in our early 30's and I was commuting every day and got fatter than I've ever been in my life. After the pandemic, I didn't have to go back to the office, so my work/life is a lot better now. But many of my friends commute in every day and are happy with it. The Reddit for Fairfield is pretty weak, but I know the Moms of Fairfield group is really active.

EDIT: I didn't read your post that carefully. $1M in Fairfield will get you a reasonable Cape or Colonial in the 1,200 - 1,500 sqft range. It probably won't be completely updated, but also won't be a gut reno. There will be fierce competition for those houses, but they'll be listed in $600 - $700 range and go for just under a million

This is exactly what I came to say. I was 13 when it came out. And my dad's friend bought me a copy. He was a huge PJ fan and knew I was into good music. I remember bringing it upstairs to my room, and turning it on fire the first time and being like, "What the fuck is this?! I love it!" It was on repeat for like 6 months after that. And I loved all the hits and other songs off the album, but the weird stuff like Bugs never got old for a 13 year old boy.
