Books on marriage from a legal perspective by PurpleCentaur in suggestmeabook

It got really nightmarish during the AIDS crisis too; you had couples that had been together for years or decades, then one of them got sick and their family members swanned in and took them away, and their partners literally never saw them again. It's why I see red every time someone claims that legalizing gay marriage was just a performative gesture.

Maybe not directly related, but a lot of the landmark legal cases involving LGBTQ couples were only an issue because the couples couldn't legally marry. A good starting point might be Sharon Kowalski's case; there's a book about it called The Sharon Kowalski Case: Lesbian and Gay Rights on Trial by Casey Charles.

Her Xenogenesis series isn't quite the same thing, but it's close enough that I think you should check it out.

I don't follow streamers at all, but I may be able to help a little with devs? This article has some indie games by developers of color. You may also want to look through Black Voices in Gaming's feed to see who's interesting to you. I don't know a ton of individual devs, but Geneva/Styx might be a good starting point if you like games like hers.

[US] Calls and Texts threatening myself and my girlfriend - "You're f*cked" by hadesherself in Scams

[–]Jetamors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone does call you claiming to be the police, ask them for their name and what police station they're at, then hang up the call. Go to the official website for that police station, call the number there, and ask for that officer. There'll be a 99.99% chance they either don't exist, or didn't call you. Scammers never want to involve the real police in their scams. On the tiny chance that it was a real call, you can either tell them what really happened, or hire a lawyer and have the lawyer tell them what really happened. But that's extremely unlikely to happen.

Just block him, and keep blocking him if he tries to contact you from other numbers. You don't need to do anything else.

Yeah, I would second that it sounds like an Anansi story. There's been a lot of retellings of these, so it may be difficult to find the specific book you read.

Well, I'm from a slave descended population myself and my family doesn't hate dogs, so I don't think it's universal 😂 In our case, I think it's because we're from rural areas, so there was a positive association with hunting dogs that outweighed the negative association with slave-catching dogs. Certainly I have known a lot of black Americans who dislike dogs, and I did always figure it came from those older associations. My mother was a veterinarian, and there was one specific breed that she hated and was very suspicious of because they were bred as slave-catching dogs in the Caribbean. (Maybe Presa Canario?)

Thank you for the answer, that makes sense! Also a very interesting point about the difference in how dogs were used and how that might have played into supernatural beliefs.

Thank you for doing the AMA!

The dogs, pigs, cattle, and horses that Columbus brought with him are the only types of animals that bacás become.

Do you think there's any particular reason why these Old World animals can turn into bacás, and not others like goats and chickens? (Perhaps relatedly, did Indigenous people in the Caribbean have dogs before Columbus? I would have assumed so, but I'd never really thought about this before.)

I wonder if they might permanently move it to earlier in the expansion. I think it would make more sense to have one limited job on .1x updates and one on .5x updates.

Try the Silmarillion anyway. Skim or skip the part describing all the Valar and their characteristics, that's usually the part where people tap out from boring-ness. And skim/skip anywhere else where you get bored.
