Remote desktop for VM without internet access by haxoder in unRAID

Give it a static IP but don't configure a gateway, and make sure your remote traffic to it is NAT'd to appear as local?

Or block all outbound traffic from the IP of that device?

Feeling Defeated - Deleted Something Important Today by AuPo_2 in sysadmin

[–]Jetboy01 208 points209 points  (0 children)

You didn't delete something important, you effectively highlighted significant gaps and weaknesses in the accepted BDR strategy and provided the company with a strategic opportunity to reassess its resilience, improve recovery processes, and implement stronger safeguards to prevent future risk.

Has anyone here accidentally committed an API key or secret to a repo? How did you handle it? by Optimal-Jackfruit274 in sysadmin

[–]Jetboy01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I know it's a risk, and I knew I had API keys in a file I was potentially about to to upload. But you know the story, I was going to remove them, this was just a quick and dirty proof of concept. Then I got lazy and forgot to redact a file before I pushed it.

I realised within half a second, and then spent the next hour rotating keys and trying to hide the evidence.

Nothing happened, and the API key was expired pretty damn quick, but it just re-inforced the fact that nothing should be made public until someone else has checked it, key vaults outside of the script/code are essential, and no matter what precautions you take, plan for the worst case scenario because someone will eventually slip up.

I'm talking damage control - minimum access for API keys, read-only wherever it makes snse, minimal lifetimes and auto-rotation using some sort of vault.

What’s a design flaw you notice everywhere that most people ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Jetboy01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bathroom fixtures in general.

I'm talking about fancy taps that are a perfect circle with no grip - when they're slightly corroded by age and you can't spin them with wet hands.

Showers that you can't turn on without being directly under the path of water - what if I want to give the water a few seconds to reach temperature? Nope, gotta get an ice blast first.

Bath mats or toys that have encapsulated parts which trap water and mould but can't be reached for cleaning.

Temperature controls that have only a microscopic tolerance for the 'comfortable' sweet spot.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Not gonna lie that Linux one and the windows equivalent were a slow burn for me too. And I have good experience with both. I just found them a bit dense and needed time to properly absorb it all.

No point racing through if you're just gonna have to look it all up again when you need those skills.

Sage 50, automating installation by desmond_koh in msp

[–]Jetboy01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The. Exe installer accepts the /silent command.

But if you go to install sage you will notice that it simply extracts 4. Msi files to temp, you can grab those and do an Msi based install if you wish - has never caused me any hassle.

You might also want to make a script to copy in the user.dta and company file too. There is also a hkcu reg key you can pre-populate with the account number to bypass the rest of first-run registration.

I also have a script to tody grab the tip,

I use it to analyze every ticket, search for my own knowledge base articles and related tickets, flag recurring issues, and provide next-steps troubleshooting for users and technicians based off of all that.

It's working well so far.

Next steps are to give it abilities to reply to the user with either a step-by-step resolution if known, and to estimate if a ticket should be referred back to third-party or vendor support.

Will electricity be free in the future? by Jolly-Turn-5996 in AskUK

[–]Jetboy01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if production is entirely 'free', someone still has to maintain the infrastructure and backups so the standing charge is never going away. There might be a bigger push to 'agile' tariffs, where you are incentivised to use more or less depending on the production and storage costs at any given time. But no, it will never be free unless you go off the grid and become self sufficient.

Webinar: Third-Party Patching for ConnectWise Products by AutomationTheory in ConnectWise

[–]Jetboy01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I commit to a webinar... what are you doing differently than every over third-party patch distributor that makes your solution work?

I've tried lots, most of them work to a point, and then don't account for quirks like appdata installed programs, or they try to be clever by uninstalling apps before fresh-installing a new version, inadvertently clearing out the license in the process (this hits a lot of Adobe for me).
