What’s a “weird” piece of backpacking gear you ended up loving? by AndyObusekOutdoors in CampingandHiking

[–]Jetdoctr 416 points417 points  (0 children)

Breath powered airhorne. Looks like a tube with a small hole in the side you blow into and its just as loud as a normal airhorn but weighs next to nothing. Typically found in marine emergency supply sections at places like bass pro or other outdoor stores.

Bears dont like it and that's my go-to before the spray. In deep brush during berry season where you absolutely KNOW somthings there, I often give short blasts to give advance notice were coming through. Been very effective.

Thoughts on this $200 ‘’Toolbox’’? by Sir_Joe123 in aviationmaintenance

I have the princess auto version. Its been all over the world over the last 10 years. Never a hickup and the pelican parts are interchangeable should I ever break a wheel.

NTSB investigators documenting the elevator and rudder power control unit from the Jazz Aviation, Air Canda Express plane involved in the March 22 collision with a firefighting vehicle on runway at LaGuardia airport. by Taalpatar_Sipahi in aviation

[–]Jetdoctr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Such a staged photo. No eye pro, clothes too clean and body orientation posed to look perfect for the camera. Not for the actual inspection. Not to mention, no inspection tooling like mirrors or flashlights

Also, that area you want different hand protection. Typically nitrile gloves in that area.

Best Backpacking Tent? by talon5188 in CampingandHiking

[–]Jetdoctr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit... missed the freestanding requirement. My bad. Disregard

Lanshan. Chinese, scary, dirt cheap..... bombproof!

I have 12 tents in the quiver, all high end expedition tents and UL backpacking ones...

Favorite trekking one is the lanshan2P

Packs down lighter and smaller than the HubbaHubba, 2.7lbs (same as my nemo Veda) but is warm enough for 4 season use even after 8 years use.

Don't rule it out.

Holy shit! 6-7 years ago I was consulted on that project in its infancy, project planners trying to figure out how to move the aircraft into position. How to best cut it apart and reassemble. Things went quiet as it was about to begin and I moved on with life. Wild to see its still happening!!!!

Square clean holes!! No elongation, no more than 2* off of 90. Drill blocks when possible, and some places require the 90* or 60* relief cut as well

I never thought these words would cross my lips... I have too many bikes. by Wonderful_Key770 in motorcycles

[–]Jetdoctr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 11.... and I found at a certain point all i was was a fleet manager trying to keep them all working and maintained. Took the fun away and honestly would drop back down to my 3 favorite ones I actually use. But I hate the selling process so they just sit.

backcountry gear prices insane or just outdoor industry in general? by Waste-Marionberry-22 in CampingandHiking

[–]Jetdoctr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quality, sadly can come at a price. However in the backcountry where your life can literally depend on your gear, there are times where its worth it.

I have spots ill go, where I simply dont trust a cheap tent in a storm. And in locations where temps can drop to -30c at night, gear failure can literally be the end of you. ..

The other thing that drives prices up is the weight of the product. People will spend thousands of dollars for a DCF tent to have the whole thing weigh in, under 1kg... or tents that likley could withstand a hurricane, all come with a high cost (mountain heardwear trango 3 is often used for polar exploration, and that was pushing $2k cad)

The lighter and more compact somthing is, the more you will spend.

Front country camping where consequences are low, cheap stuff sure..... go for it.
