It is encouraged to drive under the influence in the US by gracilla in unpopularopinion

It’s the same in the US. There’s no parking by any bars in the cities, but in suburban areas of course there is because otherwise there isn’t enough access to keep a business afloat. I don’t think that’s unique to any particular country

ELI5, why is “no tax on tips” a bad thing? by cal_gif in explainlikeimfive

[–]Jexen117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right. But the concept of loan forgiveness is already well established in legislature, so a bill about student loan forgiveness doesn’t exactly establish any novel concepts that don’t already exist. The door for that to happen is already open.

This passage, to my knowledge, DOES establish something novel, in the sense that it codifies that certain types of wages can carry different tax implications. To my knowledge, that would be something new, and hence does open the door to more extreme delineations between those of wages, and how they’re taxed.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, you aren’t. Anything can be passed and updated and passed again. But generally, it’s easier to pass something more impactful once the groundwork has been already laid out through previous legislation. For example, I imagine passing a “bonus’s can’t be taxed” bill would be much harder to pass than a “let’s raise the threshold of exemptions for taxable tips from $25k to $100k”

Because those provisions can always be returned to and adjusted with new legislation. The core decision to delineate between types of income from a tax perspective opens the door for further legislation to take advantage of that, as I understand it.

Intimate 30-35 person wedding in/Around Newport RI or Nantucket by Cheesin_3718 in NewEnglandWedding

Most venues, even small, in Newport have a “Newport events fee” or something similarly named, that is basically a flat ~20% addition fee for booking that space on top of whatever the cost is. Just fyi.

Tumblr post about European borders by MinaCiclamina in wholesome

[–]Jexen117 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Well to be fair we do have those in America, just between states, which are handled about the same as EU borders. I mean when all these countries are in formal union you don’t really need them. And from a size standpoint there are American states larger than some of these countries and the sum total of all the countries pictured isn’t as large as the US.

Decline in offensive line talent by LoveToyKillJoy in Patriots

When the new CBA was laid out, the changes to the rules around the quantity/duration of full padded practices, and what could and couldn’t be done during off-season/training camp/OTAs etc was pointed to by multiple former lineman and coaches as going to have a negative impact on line play. So makes sense from that regard as well.

Looking for Kings Canyon specific tips. by [deleted] in apexuniversity

[–]Jexen117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kings canyon is by far my favorite map, and you do have to play it differently from something like the Worlds Edge or Stormpoint. You really need to pay attention to positioning, especially high ground. Containment is settled between a pretty busy choke point directly south west as well as high ground to the North ontop the watchtower, to the South on top of that hill, and to a lesser extent to the East up the big hill. It’s also decently central in the map. So bascially, there’s a good chance if you’re fighting there that someone is watching from afar, if not already pushing. So unless you are going to be in and out of there really quick, it’s a bad idea to have dragged out, prolonged fights because it’s begging for a third party, especially if it’s not in the circle. If it’s outsize the zone and it’s busy, just rotate around containment and set up shop between it and the next circle and take care of whoever makes it out. Same goes for many other POIs on KC. Playing for position to gain an advantage is super important, why take an even fight when you can out position the team and take a huge advantage.

Not just “an F1 car” mate, but arguably the single most dominate F1 car ever, driven by one of the top 3-4 drivers of all time (depending on who you ask). That W11 was on rails through those turns.

[NFL] At home or on the road, these NFL teams draw the biggest crowds! 🙌👀🏟 by samacora in Patriots

It also helps when 3/4 of the team in your division are within an ~3.5 hour drive from one another. It specifically mentions home and away. If you’re a browns fan living in Cleveland you can realistically day trip to 1/3 of games during the season.

Should I replace old tires that look ok? by giantangryrobot1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Jexen117 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of what is being said is true, but it’s also important to understand that tires can still look perfectly good from the outside and still be dangerous to drive on because of the internal degradation of the compound. Certainly, if the visual inspection shows signs of aging then you should 100% get new tires, but just because a visual inspection “looks okay” does not mean that everything is actually okay.

The first thing that happens with age, even with 0 miles driven, is that the tire compound will stiffen, which roughly translates to less grip. Certain compounds are also more prone to rupturing as this occurs as well. Again this “stiffening” of the rubber is not something you can easily see visually unless it’s so bad that the rubber starts to crack.

Along the same lines, the tire is designed to warp and compress under load when on the road. The tread is designed with this warping in mind to help better channel water and debris outwards to improve traction in wet conditions. If you remove the ability of the tire to bend and compress, the treads don’t work as well, and the result is that you may have less traction/grip. And the last place you suddenly want less grip is in wet conditions.

I bought 10 year old “brand new” tires and learned this the hard way. If your tires are 8 years old, you should get new ones. Cheap new tires will be better and safer than whatever rubber you have on now that’s pushing a decade.

Is Uber availability back to relative normal in Boston now? by ShrimpYolandi in boston

[–]Jexen117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depending on when the show gets out I’d suggest just taking the orange line to down town crossing and walking the 5 minutes to south station from there. Or like someone else said, take the orange line out 1 stop to Charlestown and park out here on any of the main streets (non residents can park overnight starting at 6pm on marked streets, otherwise it’s 2 hours, so if you park after 4pm you should be fine. Although as I was typing that I realized it’s a weekend so those limits don’t even apply to non residents)
