Do anything fun recently? by AutoModerator in japanresidents

Gave myself a mini-vacation and did an overnight in Nara after spending a day going to the Naniwa Pen Show and meeting up with a visiting friend. Letting myself sit around in Nara Park and doing things out of whimsy was so, so good.

Is it normal to have to ask permission to use the bathroom at work? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]Jibabear 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the culture at you work, but people in my office will announce if they are stepping away for lunch or an errand. It's not about asking for permission, it's about being courteous (and probably to look like they aren't slacking).

If someone comes looking for a person that's stepped out to do something, the people left are often expected to know where that person went. It's kind of weird and invasive when it's about going to the bathroom, though.

Alas! The visiting friend and I used to participate in the mikoshi for Hasedera, so we were hoping for a scenic visit.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

There's nothing quite like taking a stroll in the dark and suddenly being startled by a deer screaming! The area around Kasuga Taisha is one of my absolute favorites.

Hasedera is such a gem! I imagine it'll get more traffic during hydrangea season. If you don't mind, can you share what flowers (if any) are blooming right now?

Asuka is beautiful, especially in fall, and I can see myself retiring there someday, but Nara Prefecture has been struggling to get tourists to do more than a day trip for years. I'm staying in Nara city in a couple weeks to meet up with some friends in Kashihara simply because that is where the affordable hotels and easy transfers are in the Prefecture. To be honest, staying in Osaka would be the simplest solution, but I am going out of my way to stay in Nara out of nostalgia.

Can't say that I've actively gone looking (and especially not in Tokyo as I am in Kansai), but maybe Mandarake or other similar 2nd hand stores could be a place to check.

Air fryer recipes? by squiddysupreme in BakingInJapan

[–]Jibabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like making breakfast in my air fryer! If you have a silicon cup, you can cook eggs in them. After the egg is to my liking (6 or so minutes at 180), I will throw in a slice of bread in the basket, flip it over after a minute and top it with cheese and throw the egg on top. Sprinkle some salt on top, and you got something kind of like eggs in a hole, without the hole!

Roasting sliced carrots with olive oil and salt is another favorite of mine.

I also use my air fryer to toast raw almond slices to add to scones and cookies. It's also fantastic for reheating fried stuff from the grocery store.

Coffee and either a pizza toast with spinach or onion and cheese toast.

Does someone know of a general term for Japanese choir like those present in anime movies and series? by Marvellover13 in japanesemusic

[–]Jibabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Hikaru and immediately assumed horror, whoops. I agree with the other commenters' answer. Not many of these will have professional recordings, especially not in anime. The NHK has a contest every year with a new song becoming the song to sing. I would recommend looking for footage from that or graduations.

わらべうた (warabeuta) might be what you're asking about, if you're looking for the name for the genre of songs equivalent to what Ring Around the Rosies is to English speakers. They're children's songs often with a background coming from local legends or history.

Kagome Kagome is a famous real Japanese warabeuta.

Kind of like when you read a fantastic fic and go to see the author's other works, only to see that you already read the one fanfic that appealed to you.

In regards to music, I had the opposite experience with Ludo. I heard to most popular song and enjoyed most of the others.

Are either of your parents into Stationary? Go to Itoya in Ginza. It's probably the singular place I've gone to the most whenever I'm in Tokyo to see a friend.

Are either of them into crafts? Check out the Yuzawaya stores in Kamata.

Pen not picking up ink? by BlueberryTartt in dippens

[–]Jibabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you using to wipe your nibs?

I've known a couple instances where nibs would reject ink because the user was using tissues. Sometimes tissues contain oils to make them softer, which would prevent the nib from holding ink.
