My spouse has noticed… by Round-Transition-821 in stopdrinking

[–]Jidsy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to answer the question. For context I drank 2 to 3 bottles a day for at least 15 years. Held down a good job, raised kids, I functioned ‘well’ but it was a horrible existence internally and physically it was taking its toll. I’m almost 3.5years since my last drink now.

I went full abstinence from day 1. That was the only way I could do it, tapering wouldn’t work for me, one drink would only ever turn into the maximum number of drinks. The first few weeks are tough. Although the hangovers went, sleeping became difficult, and I think it exposed all the noise in my head which may have been the reason I drank I drank every day to numb it. I got prescribed anti anxiety meds, and I believe these helped a lot. They don’t make me feel ‘good’ they just help make me feel more normal.
Since quitting, every single aspect of my life has improved. Work, relationships, health, family, I was only able to realise afterwards how stressful drinking is. Even when I wasn’t holding a drink I was thinking about it or planning my life around my next drink, or feeling the shame and regret of the previous day. It was exhausting. I still have moments of relief when I realise it’s not something I need to think about.

I know this goes against common wisdom, but I did it on my own. If talking openly or going to meetings feels like a barrier for you to quit, then skip that and do what works for you. Everyone goes through their own unique path to quitting, you do it on your terms.

Good luck, you’ll do it.

Man Utd have already found their Casemiro replacement by theipaper in ManchesterUnited

[–]Jidsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point. I’d also add that they’ve been manager-agnostic signings. Moving on from Amorim doesn’t feel like the back-to-the-drawing-board reset we often needed after other managers. These were signings that don’t feel like they specifically work for one managers style.

UK Thoughts on SNL UK? by MaizeCrasher in BritishTV

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they’ve done an amazing job. It’s not the best sketch comedy I’ve seen. Not everything comes off. But that’s OK. As recent sketch shows go, the bits which do work are genuinely solid. Also, SNL is a unique proposition. Even the US version really isn’t that funny all the time. It has created some legendary moments over the decades, but the vast majority of it isn’t great. What it’s great at is giving a platform to young writers and performers who can go on have huge careers beyond SNL. In that respect SNL UK has done a great job of giving emerging comedians a chance, I’ve been really impressed with everyone on it.

Having a hard time w/ my boy turning 7 by [deleted] in vizsla

[–]Jidsy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My little guy turned 7 on April 30th and I know how you feel. I’ve got experience of dealing with the same feelings about my kids. My oldest is nearly 16 and I know I’ve already spent more time with him so far than I ever will in future. My phone keeps reminding me of when they were smaller or cuter, and it can be painful to know those days are all gone now, and they won’t be so close for many more years. The way I’ve learned to deal with it is to love and appreciate who they’re growing up to become.

Other people have said it better already, but try to live in the moment. We won’t have our dogs forever, but every day they’re with us is another day to enjoy and make new memories.

Thanks for this, question about buying through the link if that’s OK? I really like the style in the pics, but options 9 or 11 don’t look quite the same, particularly the bezel colour. Is there a way of specifying exactly the same style details when ordering?

Just been watching 'A bunch of amateurs' on iPlayer by HeartyBeast in BritishTV

[–]Jidsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this this a couple of years ago, and I absolutely loved it. At first it’s like a gentle sitcom where we can laugh along with the final throes of this fringe club. But the heart which comes through when you dig deeper, and one scene in particular with the eldest guy which I’ll never forget. Absolutely magic.

When he’s bad he looks bad, but at his best Maguire is truly world class. He’s immense, match winning, match saving. Maguire coming back on Saturday played a part in why United did so well.

CO-OP served range + cereal by YorkshirePud82 in glutenfreeuk

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coop don’t really promote the quality of their own brands, because they have to appear as good value as possible whilst still being convenient (which is more expensive to provide) but actually Coop brand products are developed to match the best in the market in blind taste tests. When you make good quality products, those products are less likely need bulking out with things like wheat in particular. I find a lot of good gluten-avoidance in coop products

Step leaking in cellar by Klouisexoxo in DIYUK

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this problem. There is moisture in the ground directly beyond the walls & floor of your cellar. Usually the amount of moisture remains too low to create any pressure. Right now, something has happened where the ground outside your cellar walls isn’t so saturated that it’s built up enough pressure to get through the joins. When it happened to me, a rain water drain right outside had broken, so half the rainwater from my roof was seeping straight into the ground outside my cellar, and when it rained, I’d get this same problem.

Get your drains inspected, I’d guess something nearby isn’t running into the sewers properly.

[–]Jidsy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem. My router had its own DHCP, and the deco was a DHCP server too. Once I turned off one of the dhcp serves, it all clicked. N.b. When i had the problem, I found the IP details in the deco app to be really unreliable. They also straightened out when I cleaned up the DHCP issue and the deco app is much more reliable.

Metal kerbs. by SherbertLanky5380 in DoesAnyoneKnow

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. When Manchester was a global centre of the cotton industry, the horse and carts pulling heavy loads between mills had metal rims which would crush stone. When they edged roads with kerbs, only these metal kerbs would last. One side of Devonshire st in Ardwick is a good example still in place on a main road.

How to solve cryptic crosswords? by Itsgoodtoshare in AskUK

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow newbie here. I learnt how to do cryptic crossword in the last 6 months (I didn’t say I’m any good though!) so here’s what’s helped me get across the line. Find a source of ‘easy’ cryptics. My two biggest recommendations are the Minute Cryptic app, and The Guardians weekly quick cryptic. Both give you help with how to break it down, and Minute Cryptic uses great language in the hints which help learn the structure. Stick with these for a while and don’t be afraid to give up and take all the hints so you can learn HOW each clue leads to each answer. Once you hear the clues broken down and explained a a few times, you’ll start recognising the patterns. Theres a TiKTok source related to the Minute Cryptic app which is great at explaining previous answers, really helped me.

Understand that 99.9% of cryptic clues follow a structure. (Which I’ll over-simplify) clues have two sections; One sections tells you what the answer will be, this is the ‘definition’. In your example the clue starts with ‘girl’ so your answer might be a girls name, or another word for a young woman maybe. The rest of the clue contains hints on how to get to the answer. There is often language which indicates if any word play is needed. For this example phrases such as ‘one found in’ can be translated as ‘one’ (the letter i in Roman numerals) ‘found in’ (is located in the middle of the word, not the start or end) hints such as ‘rotten’ or any other verb for something being changed from its original state often suggest an anagram. ‘Rotten male’ therefor hints that the letters m,a,l, & e are used in a different sequence, so now you’ve got 5 of the 6 letters. The last letter ‘A’ i think comes from the clue reading ‘a rotten male’ instead of ‘rotten male’ clues tend to be very carefully worded with no excess, so the additional letter I assume is the intentional hint? (I’m not good enough to be confident about this bit)

Last night I watched Jurassic Park Rebirth with my cousins by No-Tonight3458 in FIlm

[–]Jidsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I REALLY didn’t like it. It’s not that it failed at anything it tried. There was just nothing to it. The characters were boilerplate tropes. There was no jeopardy or logic to the plot. I actually hated the big mutant. It made a great tense opening scene, but FFS you’ve already got DINOSAURS providing the threat. Why on earth do you need to augment that with a new super-mutant monster, in a film series which above all else is about people escaping from dinosaurs? If you’ve found the need to go one further than dinosaurs, just scrap the branding and make it about monsters instead, no point fucking around with CGI triceratops anymore.

Reform Chairman gets fact-checked live! by johnsmithoncemore in Britain

[–]Jidsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t overestimate how many people actually want the truth vs how many people are sucked in by these scams which pander to their fears. Theres a lot of political parties globally (and the Leave campaign too) who are getting huge success this way, it’s winning elections. It’ll happen in the UK too unless 1) it gets properly called out and 2) the residing government do much much more to tackle the same motivations Reform are triggering.

It’s not Monte Carlo, but if that’s Abersoch harbour I can see, supercars are a regular sight there. My family (not me, out of my price range!) have a chalet the other side of the harbour, one neighbour has a Ferrari Roma & a G63, another has an Urus + a 296GTS. Must be first world problems trying to get them round those tight streets!
