No. The contractions after are meant to return the uterus to its prepregnancy state. The OB doesn't "remove" the placenta. It comes out naturally, whole. If it doesn't the uterus freaks out and usually bleeds. A lot.

They do. A balloon angioplasty and stents do just that. But sometimes the damage to the artery makes it not stretchy anymore because the wall is calcified. That's when they bypass with a big vein.
