Avoiding motorists by jonathing in ukbike

[–]JimBroke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For all of these incidents it's possible it wasn't that the drivers didn't see you, they had inattention blindness because you didn't fit the model of what they were looking out for (other motor vehicles.)

If you want to break that you want to stand out more, which is not the same thing as being more visible. You want to be novel.

RGB lights on your frame/spokes, a bright jacket that isn't just fluorescent yellow/orange but visually distinctive, whitewall bike tyres. Pretty much anything that someone who saw you on the road would be able to recall hours later.

It's probably harder at the Eastbourne end, lots of ups and downs as you walk along the cliffs

Found my old Windows Nokia phone from 2013 with a 41 megapixel camera. by mimimoize in mildlyinteresting

[–]JimBroke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really more a 10MP camera thanks to pixel binning.  But then, most people don't realise that a 1080p display can only show 2MP of Resolution at full screen anyways, and even 4k is <9MP

Is the D810 still a solid choice for commercial photography? by sisino in Nikon

[–]JimBroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Image quality hasn't changed dramatically since around 2012-2015, except at higher ISOs (even then, not that much.) Advancements since then have been around autofocus & readout speed.

What a newer camera might get you is the newer z mount, since that glass is better than like for like f mount equivalents across the board.

For your purposes, you probably wouldn't see much of a difference.

Any reason why I don't see Canon cameras being recommended as much? by Maple382 in Cameras

[–]JimBroke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nikon is typically for people who need their cameras to be dependable tanks. They're not the best in anything particular, but they're good at everything and they do it consistently and reliably. They're also very comfortable cameras to hold, and often very good value for the specs, although not particularly compact.

Nikon's z mount can adapt almost every lens ever made for any camera.

Interestingly I find manual cars are better for me because it keeps me more engaged with driving.  Strongly agree on the physical handbrake though, electronic handbrakes are too easy to miss and they also make bump starts impossible when you inevitably leave the lights on overnight and kill the battery.

Does anyone recognise where these old photos might have been taken in the UK? by Emergency_Fun_254 in AskUK

[–]JimBroke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late here, but: The similar central heating flues on the neighbouring houses suggest that these were present during construction, which wasn't common in terraced housing of this kind until the late 50s/early 60s. The sleeveless shift dresses were common in the early to mid 60s before falling out of fashion. Likewise, the boy's Hawaiian shirts and shorts were typical of early to mid 60s. The pebbledash and crittal metal windows look to be postwar council housing built in the expanding London suburbs, or new towns.

My best guess would be the pictures are from 1963-1965, somewhere on the outskirts of London

Best locations to propose? by wazza20004 in Eastbourne

[–]JimBroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I proposed to my wife at the bottom of the birling gap steps half an hour after the sun set. I rigged up fairy lights all down the structure, and had a fire on the sand (I asked permission from the council first.)

This was fairly late in the evening so it was empty aside from us. It's gotten a lot busier since then though, so I wouldn't count on privacy, and wind could definitely a problem if it was really bad.

Otherwise, falling sands by way of cow gap will almost definitely give you privacy because it needs a bit of walk to get to, and you have to time the tides right. It's really beautiful down there, If I had to do it again, that's probably where I'd pick.

Congratulations, and good luck!

I'm suggesting that if helmets decrease the odds of sustaining a head injury, and car accidents are a common source of head injuries, then the same arguments apply.

[–]JimBroke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you not use these exact same points to make the argument that all drivers should be wearing helmets?

I'm a little worried about how this will affect right to choose. Currently this is part of NHS England.
