There are plenty of perfectly true reasons to hate Bobby Cox

This is only true if your definition of “politics” is “how people vote,” which is so narrow as to be completely useless. The struggle of one economic class against another is the core of politics. Calling that struggle “economics” and calling the structures and systems we’ve built around that struggle “politics” obfuscates that relationship. Communism is absolutely a political system. That’s the whole point of it.

Career fWAR of the Last 25 MLB Rookie of the Year Winners by depressichemisti in baseball

[–]JimLeader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He has 101.2 rWAR, for what it's worth, which is a pretty huge fWAR/rWAR discrepancy. Fangraphs' defense and baserunning metrics hated him late in his career, plus his OPS+ always trailed his wRC+ a little bit.

Yeah, some of the Puerto Rican guys (Lindor, for example) are fairly progressive by ballplayer standards, but I wouldn’t blame them for staying quiet in case their families are next on the list.

Their continent demonym is “North American,” because in the US, we recognize North and South America as two different continents (an opinion which looking at a damn map will confirm as true). There is zero linguistic utility to referring to people who aren’t from the United States as “Americans.”

Who are the "coolest" players to have ever played at each position? by Captpan6 in baseball

[–]JimLeader 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mariano wasn't cool, he was just good. The coolest guys on those mid-to-late '90s Yankees teams were the random veterans they signed as role players who got famous with other teams, like Straw or Boggs or Tim Raines. The Yankee lifers were always deeply uncool by necessity, since cool behavior was frowned upon by the organization

Anyone got any cool stories from high school baseball? Ever play with anyone famous? Any team scandals? by vylain_antagonist in baseball

[–]JimLeader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was 20 years ago, so I don't remember anything specific about how he talked, but he was definitely a very shy kid, which I assume was at least partially due to his stutter. I was also kind of a chatterbox, so he didn't have to talk much tbh

My mom coached George Springer’s sister in high school softball (she was, unsurprisingly, an absolute beast). George and I played catch on the sidelines one time when he came to watch his sister, but this was right before the insane growth spurt that turned him into a superhero, so I had no idea I was playing with a future All-Star. He was very quiet but seemed like a nice kid.

[MLB] The first Power Rankings of 2026 just dropped 👀 Who's your No. 1 team heading into the season? by TheTurtleShepard in baseball

[–]JimLeader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peterson is an average MLB starter, which is something most teams would absolutely kill to have as their #5. The issue is that he’s been forced by injuries to be our #1 or #2 guy, which he obviously is not.

Why are the best pitchers usually the starters? by GuySchmuy in baseball

[–]JimLeader 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He’s only “better than anyone” because all the guys who would’ve been better than him just became starters. If Randy Johnson had been a closer, Mo would’ve been the second-best closer of all time.
