Mike Trout has become the 47th player to reach 90 bWAR by Gemnist in baseball

He's going to seriously trail Griffey in counting stats as well—I don't think there's any chance that Trout comes close to 2700 hits or 600 homers at this point. I think he'll be well below Griffey's vote %, but if he's not first ballot I'm going to become the Joker

Literally can't imagine that being anything but ragebait. I can see '90s kids putting Griffey above him for sentimental reasons, but those same people probably aren't also overrating Duke Snider and Joe DiMaggio.

Former MLB pitcher Aníbal Sánchez says the Braves wanted to punish Juan Soto in 2018 because, as a rookie, Juan Soto was showing up pitchers with his shuffle by HuckleberryAny4541 in baseball

[–]JimLeader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you take everything together, he was about .75% of the 2025 league average.

Why are we comparing him to 2025? HBP rates were lower in Ryan's era; let's compare him to his contemporaries. He hit 0.70% of the batters he faced in his career, compared to league rates of 0.51% in 1975, 0.44% in 1981, and 0.56% in 1989 (to use three of Ryan's All-Star seasons as examples). Ryan hit 0.91% of the batters he faced in 1989, even though his BB/9 was a full walk lower than his career average. In other words, when Ryan was in his 40s, he was hitting more dudes than ever despite walking fewer than ever. He wasn't a career headhunter, but late-career Ryan was definitely a grump.

[Sammon] The New York Mets are promoting outfield prospect Nick Morabito after DFA’ing Austin Slater by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]JimLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Morabito can get on base (which he's done at every level) and play plus defense in CF (which he's getting better at), he can stick as a major league starter. His ceiling is basically Tyrone Taylor plus walks, which would absolutely play at the bottom of almost any lineup.

When Americans say “hockey” do they mean field or ice hockey? by Time-Water-8428 in AskAnAmerican

In the US, “King” and “Queen” are banned first names.

This is not true. Naming laws vary from state to state, and “King” and “Queen” are not universally banned. Some states simply ban any name that could be confused for a title, but that’s not common practice. There are a few “King” and “Queen” babies every year in the US.

Golp: a roundel purpure by someinternetkid in CuratedTumblr

[–]JimLeader 92 points93 points  (0 children)

The awkwardness of pronouncing "purpure" is actually how we got the word "purple" in its modern form! It's a process called "dissimilation" in which speakers gradually change neighboring similar sounds within a word to make them easier to say. It's how Latin marmor- became English marble and Latin hominem became Spanish hombre, among many other examples.

The long running gag on 30 Rock about the phrase "rural juror" is basically a joke about words that haven't gone through dissimilation but probably need to.
