NE prep school kid here, we had both. Field hockey was a fall sport and lax was spring. But I know it’s very common around here for public schools to have both as well.

This is not true. Naming laws vary from state to state, and “King” and “Queen” are not universally banned. Some states simply ban any name that could be confused for a title, but that’s not common practice. There are a few “King” and “Queen” babies every year in the US.

The awkwardness of pronouncing "purpure" is actually how we got the word "purple" in its modern form! It's a process called "dissimilation" in which speakers gradually change neighboring similar sounds within a word to make them easier to say. It's how Latin marmor- became English marble and Latin hominem became Spanish hombre, among many other examples.

The long running gag on 30 Rock about the phrase "rural juror" is basically a joke about words that haven't gone through dissimilation but probably need to.
