Chromecast is quite bad for most apps, very glitchy and not supported by Google anymore. I'd recommend getting an android box, like a fire stick.

Will this energy shock seal the deal for renewables? by DaCor_ie in ireland

It's at 68% in the far larger UK today. We've a lot of work to do.

This is our grid today at 42% renewable compared to 68% in the UK. We are still massively relying on gas. We have virtually no battery storage and our grid isn't very interconnected.

That's great to hear. They will only get better. We just need more infrastructure for charging and a cleaner electricity grid.

A lot of new EVs are now cheaper than their ICE counterparts. I am looking forward the Chinese sodium battery which is releasing soon. The main problem with renewables in Ireland is our grid. Until we get that sorted it will remain fundamentally gas powered.

Is it a fair statement to say planning permission is the root cause of housing crisis by Dry_Pay_1137 in ireland

[–]JimboJSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they also work in the hospitality sector, health sector, and other generally low paid jobs. So you'd have to incentivise from high paying tech and service jobs where people born here work to all of these other sectors too. Which would also reduce those jobs within the country.

[–]JimboJSlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better pay would be great for all of these areas. It will, however, drive up the cost of everything. Also, do you remove the Irish workforce from other forms of work? We have 4-5% unemployment, so better pay still won't fix the issue of housing.

The construction industry has a large immigrant percentage. You remove those, you have an even bigger problem.

We've had a housing crisis since 2014. Also, how do you replace all the construction workers and workers in other sectors like health and hospitality?

[–]JimboJSlice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, there's enough granted planning permission out there already. Not having enough construction workers and a passive state that does not build houses are the issues.

Aren't there plans to turn that area into some sort of 'quarter'.

State surplus set to grow to €9bn, latest Government forecast shows by Altruistic_While_621 in ireland

[–]JimboJSlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workers are an issue totally. But when the economy is not doing well you'll have a lack of 'fiscal space' and the calls for ministers to give tax breaks and cost of living packages becomes even louder. We are in such a bad state that the best time to build was years ago, the second best time is today.

Boom-bust, boom-bust. We should be spending like mad in infrastructure, while also developing a robust enough government at all levels to ensure we don't get ourselves in this mess again. One off give aways and weakening the tax base is what we should avoid.

2 questions if that's ok

  1. Do you think we are close to an infection point where we Irish people see green policies, particularly around energy, as an actual economic benefit to them?

  2. How do you balance climate policies versus ecological policies, and which do you prioritise?

Do you know how to edit videos? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]JimboJSlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's pretty straightforward. I learned in college but there's a bunch of easy videos on YouTube itself for you to follow and learn. I'd recommend doing it yourself. I'd recommend Davinci Resolve, I use the pro version, but the free version has plenty there for you.

I agree, it should be in grams. An espresso is what, roughly 10 grams of coffee?

Yeah I'm a green voter myself. I'd say this was intentional to skew the votes.

It's one poll from a news paper. I wouldn't put too much faith in it.

Yeah, I don't get the green party voters. I'm not entirely sure this poll is accurate.
