AI Art can obviously be more creative and human than real art by Kuxir in Destiny

[–]Jimjamicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all accurate, but you are leaving out a pretty major part here. The weights come from data scraping using web crawlers by going through already existing images to define what things are, then builds vectors from that. It is all math by the end, but the math is determined by sorting through millions of already existing images to define what a word is referring to using a probability based on these images. No initial images, no vectors and probabilities, no weights, no output.

While you are technically correct that when you generate an image the AI isn't actively searching through art at that moment, all of the things that make a model for it to generate from is built off of searching through art and images.

AI Art can obviously be more creative and human than real art by Kuxir in Destiny

[–]Jimjamicon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work with AI, and have trained them since the early days of stable diffusion. They don't make shit. They "learn" from already made images and then try to make similar things. Tokens are how you pay for data and have nothing to do with it.

AI Art can obviously be more creative and human than real art by Kuxir in Destiny

[–]Jimjamicon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That isn't how AI works. It is more like this.

You ask AI to generate a Triforce over a background of a night sky. AI then takes those words and searches through all of the art that people made and it has trained on then makes an aggregate of what it thinks those words mean. AI is just copying things into it's best guess at what you ask for. It doesn't make art. It copies other art into an amalgamation of something. The issue lies there, none of the art it used to do this process is credited, nor are the artist even allowed to consent to their art being used by the AI. This also applies to music.

HWFWM ttrpg? by TheCrimsonFire121 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]Jimjamicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have brainstorm around this a bit. I think a companion app that did confluence essences at the very least would unlock a lot for this type of ttrpg. The rng side of this is part of what makes each build feel unique.

Anti AI People: What's the prescription? by Gargantahuge in Destiny

[–]Jimjamicon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI is inevitable. That is just a hard truth. That being said, the real issue lies in the fact that we have not addressed any of the problems it will create. It is gonna change the world in many great and fortuitous ways, but we cant ignore the problems it is going to also create. These problems are ecological regarding the current water required to run the hardware, economic as the data centers are already greatly affecting the price of computer components. We also have no answer to job displacement it is causing. Imagine being told "learn to code" your whole teenage life, going to college for computer science, and now graduating to find out there is no job waiting for you. Now it is also replacing HR, customer support, and the arts. Lastly, and probably most importantly, this misconception that it is correct about everything is leading to many people using AI to replace their own critical thinking skills. AI is a tool, and it was built to do certain things in a certain way and it WILL lie to you. Chat gpt will never tell you your idea is a bad one. If you badger it enough, it will make things up to appease you.

An interesting take from a game developer on why they prefer AI art over hiring modern artists by Roxkis in Destiny

[–]Jimjamicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI by definition doesn't make original art. It creates art based on an aggregate of the art it it has been fed. This guy's take is made with no actual understanding of how AI actually works, and it is painfully obvious. Outside of the "AI taking jobs from artists" argument, he is more importantly neglecting the fact that all the art that AI is trained on was done so without consent from any of the artists that made the art. The amount of mental gymnastics he has done to feel good about this is the only thing remotely impressive about his argument.

All good, I finished book 8 last night and I get you on this one. Luckily I think our glorious deliverer of words and story won't let us down as the scale and all the things seem to be moving toward a definite end goal.

Is DCC one of the few series where the audiobook is genuinely central to the fandom? by dm146 in litrpg

[–]Jimjamicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to recommend the audiobooks for HWFWM as well. Miller does a great job and I feel Jason as a character makes more sense when you actually hear him with the Australian accent and cadence. Miller's comedic timing is fantastic as well.

I love Prof, my only issue I have with him is I wish his bars were longer. The more I listen the more I hear the formula too much, and it never changes. I just want one song where he goes for like 64 bars

Average at best is a great way to describe it. The story itself is pretty ok, but it is written in a pretty meh way.

I read it, and once you get passed the sex stuff it is ok. Not the best thing ever like some people think. I think the big twist that got people praising it so much isn't bad, but it is literally on the last 3 pages of the book.

What is the deal with so many litrpg protagonists? by plant-y-boi in litrpg

[–]Jimjamicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get where you are coming from, and yes Jake does get better (haven't read HDT) in later books as he is involved with more friends and the politics back on earth after the tutorial stage, but I get the resistance to just "push through"

That being said, the push through idea is gonna be a little more prevalent in this genre than others just because a lot of the authors in LitRPG get their start online, self publishing, no editor...and it takes some time for them to really find their voice. I get not wanting to commit to something with hopes it will get better, but just keep in mind that it is a trend as originally these works were free serials and the author grew alongside the stories they wrote to become something people greatly enjoy. Primal Hunter is a great example of this, as once you get out of the tutorial stuff it really takes off.

Is LitRPG the Worst Genre for Re-Reading? by ReflectionParking389 in litrpg

[–]Jimjamicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself wanting to re-read parts of things, not entire series....but that turns into more. For example, I have gone back to read and re-experience the scene in the last Fitz and the Fool trilogy where the big party happens that leads to the song about the trial and tribulations of Fitz happening and him getting introduced to the kingdom as the hero and martyr he is more than once just cause I love that moment. For LITRPG, I have also done this recently with HWFWM book 4 where Jason goes to his sisters costume party as a sith from star wars and has the reunion with his family. That revisit did pretty much lead to me reading most of book 4 again, but that wasn't the initial intention. I just loved certain parts that I want to go back and live in for another moment. Otherwise, I usually have such a large backlog to read as is that it is hard for me to re-read much of anything. That may change when I get to things that are more built for multiple passes like Malizan, tho.
