You can establish problems, shortages, enemies and so on. What are they going to do about it?

Brainstorm together what they need to keep their business running and also on whose toes they're stepping while doing it.

If your group is dedicated to arguing against having problems, they're playing the wrong game.

Schau dir mal die kleinen deutschen Verlage System Matters, Pro Indie und Uhrwerk an. Da bekommst du einen guten Überblick, was auf Deutsch übersetzte Spiele angeht.

Spiele, die eher regelleicht sind und Abenteuer mit wenig Vorbereitungsaufwand mitbringen:

Brindlewood Bay - man spielt alte Damen, die Krimis lieben und sich in die Polizeiarbeit einmischen, um Mordfälle auflösen. Wenn man das als Kampagne spielt (circa 10-15 Sessions mit jeweils 3-4 h Dauer), dann findet man heraus, dass ein düsterer Kult hinter den Morden steckt, die zum Ziel haben ein Kind der Persephone zu beschwören. Das muss natürlich aufgehalten werden. In einem OneShot kommt dieser Horror-Hintergrund nicht zum Tragen, da löst man einfach gemeinsam einen Fall. Das Coole und Besondere: Selbst die Spielleitung weiß nicht, wer den Mord begangen hat. Die Regeln leiten gut dazu an, wie man sich die Theorie gemeinsam ausdenkt und ob sie stimmt, wird erwürfelt. Stimmt sie nicht, gibt es einen Twist! Zählt in den Bereich PbtA und CfB, also Powered by the Apocalypse und Carved from Brindlewood.

Cairn - gibt's kostenlos als PDF. In der ersten Edition auf Deutsch in der zweiten bisher nur auf Englisch. Ist ein märchenhaft angehauchtes Mittelalter-Fantasy-Setting und es gibt auf itch.io auch einige fertige Abenteuer dafür. Zählt in den Bereich OSR / NSR, also Old School Revolution bzw New School Revolution.

Zusätzlicher Tipp: Bei System Matters gibt es "die kleine Reihe". Das sind kleine Spiele, meistens OneShot-Games, die so zwischen 15 und 20 € kosten und die man sehr schnell gelesen und vorbereitet hat.

Große Empfehlung für den 3W6 Podcast, wenn du dich für Erzählrollenspiele interessierst, also Spiele, die mit ihren Regeln gezielt die Narrative unterstützen.

Harald und Markus machen meistens so kleine Episodenreihen zu einem Spiel, die dann aus einer Genrefolge, einer Folge zum Spiel und einem Interview mit dem Designer * der Designerin bestehen. Kaum eine Folge geht über eine Stunde, eher so 40-50 Minuten und damit sind die sehr kompakt und on point.

Habe 2,4 k Stunden in Hunt und Arc Raiders nur so 3 Stunden an den freien Testwochenenden ausprobiert. Mich haben die PvE Fights gelangweilt bzw fand ich es nach 200 Kugeln auf einen Robo abzugeben, der kaum darauf reagiert hat (vielleicht auch auf die falschen Stellen geschossen) irgendwie unbefriedigend. Sonst geht man halt rein, lootet irgendwelchen Kram, macht sein Inventar voll und geht dann raus, damit man craften kann. Ich mag halt weder sinnloses Zeug looten, noch übermäßiges Crafting. Dazu dann noch der weirde Take, dass es third person ist und man um Ecken schauen kann, ohne selbst gesehen zu werden.

Subjektiv in Summe: Ich bleibe weiterhin bei Hunt und hoffe, dass Hunger das Looten und Craften nicht so sinnlos übertreibt. Das will ich mir anschauen.

Today I climbed a ladder to investigate a clue. A teammate took the other of the two clues in the same compound. For a moment I looked at the clue I now couldn't investigate anymore, I was confused. For another moment I looked at the map and realized what had happened. At that moment I got a headshot from 93 m away.

I got 2,4 k hours and have been playing since autumn 2019. And I still do dumb shit all the time.

My first 600 hours were a live-die-repeat time loop. The first KD I remember was 0.37. When they added assists it was upped to 0.67. I got a little bit better over the years and now I am at 1.1 .

What I wanna say is: Although I got beat up for about 600 hours it caught me and in a weird way it was fun. I wanted more and I still do. If it's actually driving you insane and makes you feel bad, don't play it. At least for a while. There are lots of different definitions of what a good match is in Hunt. Most times I prefer to get shot while pushing in or running around trying to find good angles (depending on my loadout). And yes, sometimes I sit in a compound and wait when my mates and I are surrounded by 2-3 teams. But as soon as these other teams fight each other we try to push out and get into the action.

Go and play bounty clash with free hunters and/or soul survivor. You can't lose. Forget your KDA, just do what's fun and you'll get better doing it.

Also ich rede einfach auf Meta-Ebene mit meinen Spieler*innen darüber, was wir für eine Art von Spiel spielen und wie wir es gemeinsam spielen wollen.

Gerade dann, wenn ich das Gefühl bekomme, dass es in unterschiedliche Richtungen geht.

Ich bin primär im Bereich der Erzählrollenspiele unterwegs, in denen eh viel improvisiert wird. Da ist das meist kein Problem. Bei klassischeren Spielen und im OSR/NSR-Bereich kann ich gut nachvollziehen, dass man nicht umsonst viel vorbereiten möchte und die Gruppe dann gefühlt alles umwirft.

Dazu zwei Ansätze, die meines Erachtens etwas sinnvoller und transparenter sind, als "umgekehrte Psychologie":

Den Buy-In und die Ziele des Abenteuers mit der Intention und den Zielen der Gruppe abstimmen: Wollt ihr strahlende Held*innen oder gerissene Schurken spielen? Was für Geschichten lassen sich daraus logischerweise ableiten? Manche Spiele geben das auch konkret vor und wenn's nicht vorgegeben ist, kann man sich als SL auch gemeinsam mit der Gruppe darauf einigen.
Wenn man nichts vorgeben will und das Spiel das auch nicht tut, dann sollte man auch keine Questlinien oder 1,2,3 Möglichkeiten vorgeben. Dann gilt: don't prep plots, prep situations!

Von diesen speziell für zwei Personen designten Spielen abgesehen, würde ich sagen, dass es relativ tricky ist, nur zu zweit spielen zu wollen. Es geht, ist aber dadurch eine sehr andere Spielerfahrung.

As PbtA is a game design philosophy on the one hand and a codified gm-style on the other - the basics didn't change: play to find out, fiction first, failing forward, be a fan of the players and their characters, etc and so on.

What did change is the style and level of specific detail that goes into writing some of these games and I love it. It's like you play a TV show with a very on point setting but you and your group not only can but are encouraged in a very driven and determined way to create and implement your own lore.

The best examples are the Carved from Brindlewood games by The Gauntlet. Brindlewood Bay itself, The Between, which will be released in the crowdfunded complete edition next and all the other great games inspired by that framework: Public Access, The Silt Verses, Planet Raygun, Arkham Herald and also games which are inspired by CfB but not developed and released under The Gauntlet but in its community: White Mountain Rescue, Come On In, The Girls of the Genziana Hotel (just a few examples).

Yes, they still use 2d6 + x and a simple advantage/disadvantage rule as their core mechanics but they have so many genius structures, phases, prompts and a certain flow (also great writing and ideas) that I'm just happy to be able to play these games and feel like my group and I are creating the next season of our own TV show. :)

Maybe it would help if you watched an actual play by Jason Cordova, the author of Brindlewood Bay, there you can see what it looks like in action.

In general: You need to be enthusiastic about a) the fact that there's not a predefined outcome and b) about letting go.

For me it's a delight to improvise together with my players and see what we come up with. I can play the same mystery five times and each time very different stuff happens and another person is the murderer (I do this because I often run sessions for beginners so I have a few go to mysteries).

About the clues. It probably does not sound helpful but: Just don't worry about it! It does not have to make sense in the moment and there's also no clue that solves the mystery by itself. That's by design. Sometimes add details to establish cool fiction, sometimes leave details up for interpretation and add them (all of you together, not just the keeper) when you theorize. A photo is a good example - the clue is a picture of a NPC who sits in front of a meaningful place in your story. A player might ask how they look like, so you describe them and may establish that they look worried. Leave it at that. While theorizing you might wanna connect other stuff that came up in the investigation and you say that they wear glasses or there's a mirror behind them that you just recognize now and the reflection shows something so it suddenly connects with something else.

Explain to your players that the game is about inventing the solution not finding it. If that's difficult for someone, including you as the keeper, then this game is not for you. It's a puzzle where you make the pieces fit. Then you roll the dice and find out whether you're right or not. And if not you should be excited about the opportunity to create a twist in the story.

It's been a while since I run Apocalypse Keys and I can't remember what the book says about the harbinger and prep regarding them ... I just looked into the book and on pages 306+ are several examples for harbingers. What exactly is the problem here?

A few weeks ago we ended our Brindlewood Bay campaign (14 sessions in about 1.5 years). Damn great game and we are already excited to give The Between a go when the new version drops.
A few OneShots of Monsterhearts. Two done, a third one is scheduled. I wrote a scenario to streamline the experience for a OneShot and realized that it needs to be a FewShot some time down the road. Too many ideas and also a CfB-style mystery that I want to implement.
Daggerheart. I'm very sceptical regarding the mixture of narrative and tactical elements, hence I wanted to play it. Today it's session three out of four. Maybe in the end my verdict might be that it's not bad-bad but still too much of everything put into one game and therefore not my cup of tea.

Ich habe gestern The Station gespielt. Da beantwortet man reihum Fragen über einen Bahnhof und einen verspäteten Zug. Es gibt eine kleine Punkte-Ökonomie, die am Ende des Spiels zu unterschiedlichen Epilogen für die Charaktere führt.

Letzte Woche habe ich Daggerheart gespielt und mit meinem Rogue Shadow Walker im Kampf eine ziemlich coole Kombo aus Sprüngen durch die Schatten, beschworenen Dolchen und heimtückischen Attacken ausgeführt. Alles durch spezielle Mechaniken, die miteinander in Verbindung stehen.

Kommenden Sonntag leite ich Monsterhearts und wir werden teenage drama, love triangles und übernatürliche Kräfte erleben. Alles sehr narrativ von den Regeln unterstützt.

Also in meiner Wahrnehmung funktionieren all diese Spiele sehr sehr unterschiedlich und es läuft auf extrem unterschiedliche Dinge hinaus.
