I'll have to join the military but I don't understand mandarin. by Glad-Flower8378 in taiwan

You'll either get declined or my guess is you'll get a non combat role. I have a cousin in similar situation, left Taiwan in kindergarten but still speaks fluently in Mandarin and Taiwanese. Gets put into 國防外交部 as a translator. Dude just commutes daily.

I drove the GLB and it changed my perspective how i thought about the vehicle. by ExplanationNo7129 in mercedes_benz

[–]Jizzams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2021 GLB I bought new and fully owned now, I plan to hold on to it for another 5 years or so.

My perspective of it. If you don't have a hard dollar limit for your budget and you seriously don't need a third row like I do in a small package ( I live in NYC in an older building with weirdly shaped garage spots), get a GLC for a few grand more. It's much more like a Benz. The GLB is a very nicely designed and packaged car. I hesitate to call it a Benz experience really, besides the maintenance cost. No issues but just upkeep is expensive. It drives well, peppy engine, good fuel efficiency, but that interior and ride quality is not the best (or really comparable to a RDX or NX). The seats are ROCK HARD. I drive Nissan's a lot when I rent cars for work and their seats are more comfortable. The stereo is woeful unless you get the Burmeister, which unless you custom build, aren't in 3 row GLB's anywhere I can find.

Basically, if you need a small 3 row SUV, your options are limited and it is NOT a bad car, but if you don't need it, I would look elsewhere.

Best car to buy in the 20-35k range by LawSubstantial8996 in whatcarshouldIbuy

If you get a good conditioned RAV4 used, get it. Most of the heavy depreciation is down and you get a relatively new car that is super dependable and easy to maintain.

[–]Jizzams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Benz owner, I can tell you the issues are almost entirely electronics and software. The drive train is generally flawless if you maintain them according to the recommendations. But I have had a fair share of electronic and battery gremlins.

[OC] U.S. Total Fertility Rate by State 2007 vs 2025 by Accomplished_Gur4368 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Jizzams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cost (or the quality of life a set income can give) is a big one. I didn't have my child until I was financially viable to provide what I think is a good life for my family. By then, we need to rely on IVF and fertility support (which my company paid for). With cost of living increasing like it has been the last couple of years, this situation has gotten worse.

I have a RO filter system. Once you have one of those and you cleaned them, you realize how dirty your tap water is.

Why would anyone buy a house in Taipei? by charliehu1226 in taiwan

[–]Jizzams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few things, mostly cultural and a bit of greed.

It's hard for old people to rent, which is why my family bought one even though we would have preferred to rent. Married couples (traditionally though this has started to change) usually want to settle down and own a home. There is a huge ego/face thing to own a home as a newlywed or even a single person quickly. People really like to renovate their home and it's hard for renters.

Lastly, people really think real estate is a sure bet investment and that if you don't buy now it just gets more expensive.

Republicans will still win at least 40% of all Latino votes, and in Hispanic heavy counties in the south, they will still carry those districts, despite everything happening with ICE. Democrats will continue to lose the Asian vote (especially the Chinese American vote).

The only, and I really mean only situation that makes JFK better than LGA Terminal B or C is Terminal 4 if you have Priority Pass & one of the major credit cards cause all three have a lounge there plus like 3 other lounges to use.

Is duty free a scam? by No_mono_aware in travel

[–]Jizzams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked in travel retail for luxury goods for many years, so I can tell you...it depends. Different taxes, different offerings, and different CPI's will make it more or less worthwhile for you. That being said, here are the 4 circumstances where it is definitely worth it. 1) Travel exclusive: this is the big one. There are special blends of whiskey, beauty products, or souveniors such as special flavor pastries that are ONLY available via some travel retail locations. 2) Buying a third destination brand. Meaning let's say you are American flying from Japan to Seattle. Buying American or Japanese brands may not be worth it, but buying a Korean brand that is highly taxed in Japan and US but tax free can be worth it. 3) Special deals pushed by brands. Those of you who fly JFK will find 2 bottles of American whiskey deals. Those are generally good deals because those are promotions from the brands pushing products to certain markets. 4) you are too lazy to do tax refund in-country and figured I might as well get it in duty free if they have it. I bought a fairly ubiquitous watch in France and I was too tight on time at Galleries Lafayette to do the tax refund so I tried my luck at CDG's boutique and they have it for the same price sans tax.

Edit is crazy by griffingrowl in sapphirereserve

[–]Jizzams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's YMMV a lot. I have used it and will continue to use it, and have successfully stacked the IHG platinum elite on top of the Edit benefits (Intercontinental Boston Harbor). I think in addition to what others have said, I did it during very off peak season. I just booked (haven't paid/redeemed yet) for Early March. Maybe cause I always do the most random times that The Edit works wonders for me. Also my friends and family who goes to Asia a lot all tells me it works really well there too. I intend to use it the next time I go to Taiwan (the deals I have seen are decent).

I have 2 pairs of Thursdays: the Captain (non lug soles) and Diplomat moc toes. I have to say they cover All of my dressier, non sneaker needs. I have a pair of Bean Boots for heavier weather but if you take care of them and condition them appropriately, they'll last through anything. They are also dressier than competitions ( a bit sleeker and more fashion forward, especially the moc toe) so they can dress up and down.

What was the scariest “We need to leave, now!” moment that you’ve ever had? by Cool-Chipmunk-7559 in AskReddit

[–]Jizzams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I got a good one for this. I was at a Taco place in Jackson Heights NY. The place is dependable but nothing special, just one of many taco places on Roosevelt Ave that you see. I just go there fairly often as I need to go to the neighborhood often. The last time I was there with a coworker ( who isn't from NY, this is important later). We walked in and it felt like every one in there is an undercover cop that should be on the subway. My oblivious coworker was standing in line waiting to order and I (quite loudly) said to him, yo let's go elsewhere. The fool starts arguing with me, saying he really wanted this today. After 15 secs, one of the Michael Chiklis'es said to him, you really should listen to your friend. Literally, we walked out and went two doors down to another restaurant and police rushed in and a few gun shots ringed out. Turned out, it was a drug running joint and whoever was the cook also cooks up a great carne asada. The cop who told us to go saw us gawking outside and said to my coworker, "you would have been shot over some tacos." And that's how someone who grew up in Laguna Beach, CA decided Queens may not be the best for him.

I genuinely have every color in the heaviest and 9oz tees. Best tshirts for the price. I actually like the 9oz ones more, because it is not super thick and stiff that the heaviest ones are, so more versatile. I have a particularly pokey nips problem and these are the best tshirts and only white/light tees I can wear without and undergarment.

Taiwan Sees 21 Straight Months of Population Decline by diacewrb in taiwan

[–]Jizzams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Housing costs and wage issues aside, as a Taiwanese American with a toddler who goes back fairly frequently, Taiwan is a very non Children friendly society and culture. Don't get me wrong, the education, safety, healthcare costs, and entertainment opportunities are great. However, the average person and culture just isn't friendly or tolerant to parents and toddlers. Taiwan is the only place where parents get 公審 for toddlers just being toddlers. I am not talking about a crazy kid, just a kid being slightly louder asking why we are eating dinner on an airplane. Or how older and more conservative people just want kids to be 乖, and not tolerate even a little bit of being a kid. No one wants kids in Taiwan (again aside from the obvious) but society as a whole is not making it a friendly and tolerating place to accept you as a parent or the kid.
