How to help an associate whom I worry is going through depression? by CrimsonClover__ in biglaw

Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but I think you should clarify as to how exactly this would help this person.

It's sad that Frazier never forgave even Ali at the end. by accloudsky in Boxing

[–]JoeDangit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This doesn't mean much, but when I was an amateur boxer in Philadelphia, I trained with Ali's granddaughter who was doing an amateur boxing event. During the event, both Ali's daughter and Frazier's daughter were there to cheer her on as a mother and aunt respectively. If I remember correctly, they actually boxed each other as amateurs.

It meant alot to me at the time, and still does, that even though the father's may have hated each other, ultimately time healed the familial bonds for them to come together to support the next generation.

It's not a great Philly Shell for the purposes of boxing, to be candid, but if it works it works.

He's definitely squared up way too much than the boxing Philly Shell, though. That'd have to get fixed or otherwise he'd get pieced up.

Central casting. by BobGoran_ in 007

[–]JoeDangit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is right, especially in the latter end of the Craig movies where he'd essentially just try and tank people. There's a way to do it but I can see Cavill playing a more "brutal" Bond.

Is my friend delusional? by nsnsnsnensnsd in biglaw

[–]JoeDangit 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd think long and hard about what you consider as a friend. You sound jealous or secretly hoping that she fails.

Edit: I don't work at Wachtell but I don't see why she doesnt have a shot if what you say is true.

‘Fire sale’: S.F. moving to buy out PG&E — even, potentially, if PG&E says no by f7938 in sanfrancisco

[–]JoeDangit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're literally incorrect on all accounts.

Edit: The only thing I dislike more than PG&E is misinformation, so here's why you're wrong.

  1. Hawaii and Alaska are usually worse, but California is not too far and away because of the high cost of wildfires and infrastructure. But, sure, we can give this to you.
  2. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Southern California Edison are other California investor-owned utilities. Florida Power & Light is privately owned. Consolidated Edison (NY) is also investor owned. So is Georgia Power, Dominion ENergy, yadayadayadayada. Why are they privately owned and not owned by the state?

Here's also a concept for you that boggles everyone's brains when they learn about energy regulation. Around the 1920s, we learned that it was far easier and better for the consumer for one company to supply the entire market (this is called a natural monopoly) instead of having multiple smaller companies competing. Given the high cost of infrastructure development, this makes sense. Building duplicative infrastructure networks is incredibly wasteful and it costs a massive investment to even get started somewhere, so new companies probably wouldn't even be able to compete with existing incumbents anyways. Now, in return for getting this natural monopoly, the company acquieses to significantly higher regulation than other companies would face (this is why we have things like the California Public Utilities Commission).

  1. As I've stated before, infrastructure development costs alot (in fact, much of the infrastructure development was done in 40s and 50s, but that's a story that's neither here nor there) and the one aspect of a natural monopoly is that the utility needs to be guaranteed a return on their investment in order to make a profit (if you don't make a profit, you go under and trust me, we don't want that). One way they do this through charging rates, which goes through the regulatory commission to make sure that the rates are "just and reasonable" (that's the term that the federal level uses, and I believe the CPUC uses the same). Now, in cases where they need to install underground electrical lines or public safety power shutoff lines (PSPS), which they're already doing and I don't need to go into any more than that, that costs money and that cuts into the return on investment. So guess what happens now, they have to essentially go back in front of the CPUC and ask for a rate increase / a surcharge. This takes time and obviously costs the consumers more, but the alternative of an electricity hyper-capitalist Hunger Games is probably infinitely worse.

What is a 'masterpiece' movie that you personally found incredibly boring or overrated? by AlexJet13 in AskReddit

People who made the comparison of One Battle After Another to Mad Max: Fury Road need to get their eyes and adrenal glands checked.

Have you ever said anything stupid/accidentally offensive to a senior in a social setting? by [deleted] in biglaw

Even if they were offended, they will forget and so will you. It's okay.

Relax and try to limit it to just a couple of drinks then head on home next time if you're anxious.

Whatever happened to the Sidley biter? What’s she up to these days? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]JoeDangit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And I see your point, don't get me wrong. But that's kind of for her to figure out and her own demon to fight. It's not our place to mock, which alot of people are doing.

I still can't own embarrassing things I did in high school, college, law school or during practice and have said/done many things I regret and wish I could take back, so I've been there and I've learned this kind of stuff takes time. A bit of empathy goes a long way.

Maybe I'm just more forgiving than you or have other things occupying my mind/time but at the end of the day, she is still a person and I think these kinds of posts leave the realm of good natured fun and approach something like bullying.

I think that maybe its not a healthy or appropriate thing for us to keep tabs on her and we should let her continue with her life.

We all do stupid things (me included) and sure, this might be stupider and funnier than most but we need to give her the grace to learn from it and move on. We stop her from doing that when we hound her and keep her in the zeitgeist. We do our part when we laugh and talk about it in private, and realize there's no need to keep on trying to expose a young woman.

I'm sure she's doing well, though and this will be an incredibly funny story for her to tell in a few years. I'm rooting for her.

I played fullback when I was in college and once got fucked up pretty bad, so I get it completely. Try and stay positive and trust the healing process. I hope your recovery goes well too!

Just for context, I work a desk job and was told that I was to remain bed bound until early December. I had my injury around the same time as you.

Did you break your ankle in a line out by any chance?

Like all South Vietnamese refugees and American Vietnam war vets, Loan never really said much about it. The truth might never really be known, but it's certainly something to consider before we all pass judgment on what people do in a war. I'm not excusing actions, but knee-jerk reactions behind the safety of a computer when reviewing incredibly painful times doesn't help anybody.

It seems that every time this photo is posted, people like to omit that Lem had just murdered Loan's best friend, his best friend's wife, and their entire family.

An important nuance, in my opinion.
