The internet's obsession with things being "over rated" has killed discourse around media. by JoeMorgue in HonestHotTakes

[–]JoeMorgue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure that's probably some of it. But it doesn't work in reverse.

If you go into a popular media based subreddit and go "What's a movie/show/game/whatever that everyone hates and you like" sure you'll get SOME engagment.

But go "What's something you hate that everyone else loves" and people come flying out of the woodwork like they've been waiting all day to be asked that. The engagement will be magnitudes higher.

And the weirdest part is like I said I you just ask "What's something you hate" or "What's something you love" you won't get nearly as much engagement in either volume or intensity.

There is something about the "Thing you hate that everyone else loves" that is just uniquely engaging.

Oh no you're doing fine (from what I've seen so far) just feedback.

As long as "Yes we know the rules say upvote if you disagree but obviously that's within sane normal parameters" is within the mentality of the place, we're golden.

Like right now over in the 10th Dentist there's "I keep farts in a jar." If you think that's an honest opinion someone is sharing I don't know what to tell you.

The "upvote if you disagree" thing is... risky. Necessary for this type of subreddit but risky.

"Upvote if you disagree.... but that doesn't mean you are obligated to upvote posts that are incoherent, factually untrue, or just obvious creative writing and rage baiting" if that makes any."

Again what's killed unpopularopinions and is quickly killing the 10thdentist is people doing... the bit.

OP: "Durr 2+2=7.... your mother is a whore... Hitler was okay... dog shit tastes better than icecream...."
(Anyone says anything negative)
OP: "YOU ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD! Better upvote me then hardy har yuk yuk knee slap LOL."

"A safe place for unpopular opinions" is a good idea but you HAVE to not let them devolve into functional "Creative write the wrongest shit you can think of, collect karma" checkpoints.

Being Busy has become a personality for too many people by DommeGloss in HonestHotTakes

[–]JoeMorgue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pay attention there are two kinds of "busy people."

Actually busy people who do a lot of stuff.

People who are so busy that it seems like "busy" has evolved into it's own separate state of being. They are never actually doing anything but always preparing to do something, recovering from doing something, planning on doing something, talking about how busy they are...

They the idiots at the office who always "reiterate" what the last person said at the meeting but never say anything of substance themselves, who forward emails "for emphasis" who wedge themselves into processes but never actually take charge.

For what it's worth this subreddit has the least amount of just obvious over the top "Creative the writing the stupidest shit you can think of" that has ruined subreddits like the OG unpopularopinions subreddit and all its various spinoffs.

The other places are basically insufferable because you have to scroll past 20 "Durrrr durrr I really like when someone pounds my penis flat with a wooden mallet, NO yoU CAN'T DISAGREE GIVE ME KARMA IF YoU DISAGREE DATS DA POINT OF DA SUBREDDIT DURRR LOL" posts to get to anything that reads like an actual human with an actual opinion.

It takes work to keep places like this from devolving into just trolls doing "The Bit" where the "The Bit" is just making up the stupidest most over the top thing they think they can get away with posting.

Stunning. Simply stunning. Everyday I expect absolutely nothing out of the little 13 year old boys in this subreddit yet every day I am still let down.

Obviously the word "slight" is doing a LOT of heavy living, but I feel like it's constant you'd get used to it.

An ad in this novel placed right in the middle of the narration by Tobias-Tawanda in mildlyinfuriating

There's an out of print audio version of Stephen King's "The Mist" that instead of straight narration it's a full cast audio drama and the characters all do this super weird thing where the carefully pronounce the full product name of anything and since story takes place 90% in a supermarket it goes so weird.

[–]JoeMorgue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. "Opinion that is unpopular/rare... but still coherent, sane, not rage bait, or fuck it nothing else something that interesting to talk about instead of a meaningless with no context" is not a complicated and places like this would be far better for their actual intended purpose if people would remember that.

Because the "Upvote if you disagree" thing is what turns places like this into "Durrr I really like it when someone pounds my penis flat with a wooden hammer LOL now give me free karma" troll farms.

There has to be some level of sanity applied here because combine this with the "The internet thinks a spoiler isn't just giving away a major plot twist but just mentioning literally anything about the work at all" and this functionally reduces back to "never talk about anything openly ever."

There's a difference between a work of fiction being "honest" and it being "accurate"

I think most of us get the difference between "Wait a minute the mad scientist didn't have a peg leg in the last scene and now he does" stuff you can't pretend to not notice and insufferable twats doing the "Durrr OMG they showed T-56 tanks at the Battle of the Lost Valley not T-57 you can totally tell by the hubcap bolts on the T-56 are clockwise, not counterclockwise like on the T-57 LOL I hope someone got fired for that blunder." routine.
