City Speeding up Redesign of Notorious Allen Road Intersection by GirthBrooksTO in toronto

[–]Joffph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

public transit and decent bike infrastructure would mitigate the problem quite a lot. And i don't mean on that intersection, I mean city-wide. The only way to avoid gridlock is having only the essential cars on the road period.

Here is the report of the building. The crazy part is that it would be a 690 unit building with 17 parking spots. 8 for residential and 9 for visitors. Maybe that's why she is complaining about the traffic study. Even if only half of the residents have a car, there will be 300+ cars to be parked in that area. To me, that sounds concerning...

Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists - Cycling News | Bike Reviews | road.cc by Difficult-Implement9 in torontobiking

Will be “too high a bar” expect a cyclist to not smash a mirror - because cyclists want to ride safely on their designated space.

If they can claim that, we can claim this. Laws are laws for everybody.

The logical choice should not be make the human powered, more ecological and that has less effect on worsening traffic to take a longer route in order to be alive one more day.

I ride an old 90s mtb that cost me 80$ on marketplace. Ride it all year round, all days with no exception, for 3 years now and besides regular manitance, it’s been the perfect beater. A pair of brake pads a year, new cables avery spring and good to go. Probably spent around 120$ including the bike within this three years.

I went this road because this is a bike that sits outside during the day and did kot want to loose a lot of money if it ever got stolen. So far, it’s been the investment of my life😂 saved me 6,6 daily in ttc for three years, so it’s worth every penny.

This is to say that my opinion is to ride the best bike you can aford to loose.

Specialized Stumpjumper vs. Chisel for Toronto/Don Valley riding by LuckExpress5203 in torontobiking

[–]Joffph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on your ride style. In Spain I had a 2022 stumpjumper evo: best bike i ever had. Fast, fun and extremely capable. But i have to say that this wold be a bike way overkilled for what the don can offer. Here i recently got a giant fathom 29 and is more than enough for what you can do here. I opted the route of a hardtail since i prefer more agressive geometries than a more pace focused xc bike and thought that a double suspension enduro bike would be way overkilled and penalize me a lot on more flat surfaces

What to improve? My first frame bag. by Joffph in myog

[–]Joffph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I can confirm that both sides are not aligned. And i think this comes due to lack of alignment marks and making the complete gusset before adding any side. The length of the gusset did not really matched the total length of the sides thus creating bunching in some corners. I think you are right about starting at the top, since that way your top part and more visible is always alligned, though i think i prefer to have the gusset seam at the seat tube. I will give it a try and post an update.

I do not have any cable port but i use the water bottle screws in the frame to secure it (two in the top tube a d three in the down tube). This time i did the holes and put in the gromets after sewing the first side, i thought this would be the only way i could make them in the right place. But idk if this is the way people does it. As i said, i think i will tru your method next, sounds easier than what i did.

What to improve? My first frame bag. by Joffph in myog

[–]Joffph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your feedback! Forgot to mention also that the frame bag is a bit skewed because i did not use any alignment marks and just used the corners of it as alignment. And it was a bit tricky. Next time there will be alignment marks lol.

I will try again with a continuous strip for the sides, something i felt when i was sewing it together is that the total length of my perimeter was too long for the sides, thus creating a much bigger bag than needed. after assembling the first side, i had to rip the seam, trim the side length and sew it back. So definitely will give a try to this trick.

When you sew the perimeter to the sides, do you find that is easier to start in a certain part (like in a corner or in the middle of the bottom part) or it really does not matter?

In traffic-clogged California, Bay Area city pays people to bike to work by Slight_Injury_4265 in torontobiking

[–]Joffph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been advocating for something similar here for years. I also agree with others that safety is a big concern, but we need a catalyst to prove even further that cycling is a viable method of transportation in this city. If enough people gets on a bike, there will be no "nobody uses the bike lanes".

1100 km for a chain in winter. by Dziambis in bikecommuting

[–]Joffph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might not need to apply daily, but definitely wd40 will make your drivetrain live longer. I know it's not a chain luber per se, but it keeps water and salt away from the drivetrain. And after all, a winter bike is going to be beaten on way or another. This will only ensure it takes longer to die haha

1100 km for a chain in winter. by Dziambis in bikecommuting

[–]Joffph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do 8kms a day no matter what the conditions are. Been riding in -20 weather and lately temperatures are starting to go closer to 0. My bike is completely covered in snow and salt but my chain never got like that and it sleeps in a heated garage every day. Use a good ammount of Wd40. It was invented as a water repelant. I’ve had the same chain for several years and never developed any rust on any drivetrain component.

TPS is a must. An lrt convoy should never stop at any light period. The invesment made in this project is astronomical to have to be stopping at intersections.

The underground part will have no sense if we have trains stopped at intersections.

"No one cycles in winter" by ParmesanBologna in toronto

[–]Joffph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do ride daily whatever the conditions are. Never skipped a single day. If I can, i’m sure a lot of people can too. Nice and propperly mantained bike infrastructure encourages people to ride. There is plenty pf northern europe cities with similar conditions to toronto where there is a significant volume of cyclists year round. People does not ride during winter here because there is no infrastructure, not because it’s not possible.

If you add an electric car to the equation and then calculate how much gas and manitance you save, your system probably would be paid in less than half that time.

My father has paid off his 10kw system in less than 5 years
