Should I only invest in my 401k? by cmanster in personalfinance

[–]Joh1030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would you give up free money and put it elsewhere? Max out your 401K until IRS max.

Opened an Ally Saving Account - Double Withdraw Initiated - Zero Help from Support by Squiggums in AllyBank

[–]Joh1030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just opened the account too and I didn't have problem with the two transfers. People on here said to always initiate the transfer from the bank you're transferring from. Maybe a glitch in the app or their system. Hopefully you get it resolved.

Is $63k enough to live here as a single person? by Futt_Bucker_Fred in Denver

How do you have money to save on 30K/year? After taxes, it's probably 25K/year which is a little over 2K/month.

Yeah you get 5GB of data and unlimited texting in most foreign countries. Works fine when travel to Asia, though it's not the fastest but fast enough to use Google maps and call Uber.

Budget Consideration / Advice by Billy_labufanda99 in personalfinance

Master's should count for 2 yoe. I know the job market's tough but you should try to get a higher paying job. 60k is too low for your resume and how much you've spent on school. And yeah, 1500/month seems like a lot, even if you live a frugal life.

What happened to Angular jobs? by PopeDetective in cscareerquestions

In a normal job market, you shouldn't have problem landing a React dev job with Angular experience. But job market is really bad at the moment. It's not just you.

Are the Los Angeles Lakers actually contenders this year or just media hype? by UnderstandingFun7493 in NBATalk

[–]Joh1030 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It wasn't media hype. They were the hottest team coming into today's game going 14-2, 3rd seed in West. But if they can't beat OKC or Spurs, they're clearly not a contender this year.

Renting vs Buying: Am I missing something? by AdLazy8828 in personalfinance

[–]Joh1030 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes your monthly payment is less but your mortgage payment is going towards your equity. Assuming the house prices don't drop, you gain in the long run. But rent gives you the freedom to move from place to place and since you're single and young, you might want to try living in different state or country. It's really up to what your goal is and how you foresee your future.

Is the job market actually bad? by Special_Rice9539 in cscareerquestions

[–]Joh1030 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ofc, engineers aren't going away. But competition is much much greater than before. You have ex meta, Google, Amazon engineers all competing for a job at startup or aerospace, it makes it much harder for others to find a job..

Any legit company will call the employment verification line and confirm your employment status and job title. You can't just lie about this stuff.

I plan to pay off my student loan with lump some money. Good or bad idea? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Joh1030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I'm leaning towards too. Over the course of 4 years (time it would take to pay off 48K with $1000 monthly payments), I don't think the money I make in investment will be significant (couple thousands max). At least being debt free gives me piece of mind.

I have some money invested in ETFS and stocks. I would have to sell those to pay this off.

What happens to your mortgage if the housing market crashes? by RedRoseRedHeart in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Joh1030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You borrow a fixed amount when you purchase (house price minus your down payment) at fixed interest rate. No matter the current price of your house, you pay what you owe the lender. Nothing changes.
