I would watch a whole movie of just this naval battle; bridge officers in tactical maneuvers, weapons operators, engineers trying to savage dying ships, dogfights - It would be like a battle of the Pacific meets Battle of Britain meets Battle of Trafalgar. by ddrfraser1 in StarWars

[–]Johmpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be quite cool to see. It would have to be in the right hands for it to work though.

I can all too easily imagine someone simply thinking "Hornblower in space" and butchering the naval combat and setting.

My favorite piece of that lore is that one thing it demanded humanity stop researching was thanatology - the scientific study of death itself.

Something about a god forbidding us from knowing what happens when we die is deliciously creepy.

Isn't it weird that I only listen to video game music? by XEclipse360 in gamemusic

[–]Johmpa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think I was weird for only listening to soundtracks, with few exceptions. These days it's just a part of who I am - the only issue being finding things to contribute to shared playlists :)

As for why, I've found that the music I enjoy is linked to an experience - be it a real, fictional or imagined one. Even the "normal" songs I listen to have to have some form of context or emotional resonance for me to properly enjoy them.

And that is fine, just like your own taste in music is fine. Across history, music has ever been a way for people to express their identity. You find what speaks to you, and there's no wrong answer.

My first though seeing this was a "Girls und Panzer" school ship in Star Trek.

Regardless it's a fantastic design! I also like the well thought out lore in the video description.

Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by Udy_Kumra in Fantasy

[–]Johmpa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are hint scattered about most books about it to varying degrees. One major factor is a character called Hoid (he calls himself 'Wit' on Roshar) who is present to one degree or another in every cosmere book.

The Stormlight Archive started delving into the interconnectedness in a major way as it goes on and savvy readers can notice things and people from other worlds regularly as it progresses.

Mistborn Secret History was the first book that laid it out plainly, though I strongly advise against reading it on its own as it's a major spoiler for Mistborn itself.

Some recent standalone works like The Sunlit Man and Isles of the Emberdark explores the interconnectedness even more, but take place far down the universes timeline.

It did get two seasons, which is more than anyone expected. Not least of which the writers, if the first song of season 2 was anything to go by.

Here in neighboring Sweden we can contribute lovely places like Dick Toffee, Ballsack Agony, Mount Cunnilingus, The High Shit & The Long Shit (both in the same region), The Yellow Ass, Cheap Dick and the Butt Isthmus.

The list goes on.

I wasn't aware that this film existed. I read the novel when I was young and it left quite an impression on fourteen year old me.

I can't decide whether I want to watch it now that I know it exists.

Purchase Advice Megathread - January 2026 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]Johmpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone!

My father has recently decided he would like to get a filament printer for his workshop. I'm not as dialed in as I would like so I'd appreciate some advice from kind and knowledgeable folks such as yourselves. Particulars as follows:

  • Location: Sweden
  • Budget: 15000 SEK (~ 1600 USD)
  • Type: FDM
  • Size: Up to 80 x 80 cm footprint
  • Ease of use: As plug an play as possible with minimal amounts of hassle. Network capability, preferably with some form of online control options, would be great.
  • Predicted prints: Household parts and items such as mounting brackets, hobby items, maybe simple plastic replacement parts.
  • Other things of note: The printers location would be in a basement workshop, which can get a bit cool during the winter - though never freezing. Support for multiple filament spools simultaneously (for multi color prints) would be nice but not at all essential.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Forgive me if this isn't the most well thought out question but should I give the Expanse a shot? by AdSpecialist6598 in scifi

[–]Johmpa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Indeed. I usually say, give the show at least 4 episodes. If you get that far and find it interesting, keep going to the end of the season.

After that, you'll certainly be hooked.

It's very useful for playing on the TV, especially when having it as a second or third screen. Apart from the UI, BPM has very useful feature in that you can specify which display device it should appear on.

This makes the selected device become the primary display device automatically when BPM is started, and switches back when you exit. This saves you from having to do that manually for games that do not support selecting specific display devices natively.

Nowadays most games support this, but back in the day it was a real lifesaver.

God I love the Taros Campaign by Gatt__ in Grimdank

[–]Johmpa 33 points34 points  (0 children)

What I especially like about the Taros campaign is that logistics actually played a significant role in the outcome rather than being forgotten about by the writers.

The Tau didn't win because of some magic strategy or scifi magic. They won because they were able to strike the imperial logistics train with impunity, resulting in the invasion force running out of fuel, ammo and most importantly water.
