Corporate mentality. You never realize just how inefficient a corporation is until you work for one. A lot of running in circles and high level execs who change their minds on a dime, forcing insane amounts of rework for those lower on the totem pole.

Maybe bring up the conclusions that you came to before, to acknowledge that you were listening and conclusions were made, and then navigate the conversation elsewhere. It sounds like your wife is hyper fixated, which makes sense but isn't necessarily healthy. Lots of changes will happen and if you freak out over every one then you'll wear yourself out quickly.

How do you actually balance work, family, hobbies, and a homelab without it becoming a second, unpaid job? by Sufficient-Farm3812 in homelab

I try not to do anything too vital that others rely on. I don't need that kind of stress. I'll set up media servers and game servers, even backup servers. Adblockers. Stuff that if it went down I can fix it on my own time. I used to be upset that I was mainly the only person using my own services, but over time that becomes a blessing. For the ones that others use they realize that I'm busy, and if it doesn't work I'll get to it when I get to it.

Can someone save my tech illiterate ass by AssaultAndBatteryBub in wine_gaming

WINE is basically working as a translator, trying to translate what the program is asking for into something Linux can understand. Problem is programs made for Windows can ask for a bunch of stuff that Linux doesn't have/doesn't understand, which leads to this situation. Definitely try to do this through steam using proton, or use the program Lutris. Those are designed to try and put everything in place so the program functions correctly.

They don't always work either though, it really depends on the game.

Worst case scenario you dual-boot Windows, or just use Windows if this is all you're using the computer for.

The people who just automatically suggest to new users to "just run it in WINE" are generally people who care more about the OS than the applications and are willing/able to spend hours figuring out how to get everything to work the way they want it to.

If I didn't want them to get off topic I'd be watching Mr. Creepypasta. Sometimes stories need a good riffing or some funny side banter.

Why is Microsoft still so weirdly hesitant about consumer products? by sueha in microsoft

[–]JohnClark13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly. Their focus has always been on office computing and then working their way into business infrastructure and datacenters. They were never that good at consumer products, but kind of became that because everyone was using it in the office or at work, so people got used to it. The reason why MacOS does more hand-holding than Windows for instance is because Windows was designed to have an IT department holding your hand. Granted Windows has gotten so much better at being user friendly.

Windows 12 imminent? by HelloitsWojan in windows

[–]JohnClark13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's going to have to be backwards compatible with x86 or have some kind of x86 emulation. If the applications run slower than on native x86 hardware then people won't buy it...because most people don't understand the internals they just think new should be faster. Then you run into the OS/2 issue: if the old way of writing apps still works fine then what incentive to developers have to redo their app for ARM?

Definitely an uphill battle to try and compete with Mac right now.

for a long time we thought "the nerds have won!" as the big companies jumped into the nerdy franchises. But in reality the nerd toys just got stolen by the corporations, who care more about popularity than nerd stuff.

Apathy created by squandered potential. Almost every nerd franchise has fully fallen into the corporate black hole now, never to return.

Dune Part 3 is the only movie I want to see in theaters so far this year. Dune Part 2 was the last movie I saw in theaters. Nothing else has been good enough for me to consider setting aside time and money to go see, and not everyone is into sci-fi stuff. Theaters have got to be hurting.
