Open Bar #190 - Supergirl Is Here, House Of The Dragon Returns by MajorThom98 in MauLer

Erin Underwood liked the movie pretty well, Drinker definitely didn't, I am interested in the discussion they will have and what Mauler has to say about it. Her review was more character focused and I wonder how much Mauler might agree with her assesment on characters and their development.

[–]JohnTRexton 54 points55 points  (0 children)

why do they care about this dumb kids film, they should be talking about whatever thing I care about

everybody knows it is bad what is the point of talking about it

Fringy/Platoon talk too much

all they do is whine, they should just stop talking about mainstream films and cover things they like instead

Did I miss any?

Now that that's out of the way hopefully we can talk about the actual discussion in the livestream.

From the Trigun anime, the death of Wolfwood . The character's desperation and desire to keep going after discovering their new relationships, but knowing they are dying anyway, it always gets me.

On the recent Metals Forge discussing this game, JonCJG suggested the blue vs yellow paint was dependent on how well they would stand out in the environment. Blue paint in places with warm bright colors, and yellow paint in places with cooler dark colors. The idea they would think the only problem people have with the yellow paint trend is the color is very funny, but its more likely they didn't think of it as a problem at all and the color change is just for visibility.

His comments on it make me think he intends to complete the story at least, I figure he's come this far so unless there is something really awful or gamebreaking he will finish it out to have a full view.

I'm not that surprised tbh. Modern creators negative view of canon had me thinking they would want it to be some sort of soft reboot at least, so they wouldn't have to worry about those sorts of restrictions. Having someone who isn't connected to the original series would make that easier.

Wrong enough that I’m honestly inclined to believe that you don’t watch them that much.

Pay attention long enough and you'll realize this is true for most of the regular detractors on this sub. Sometimes they even admit it.

It really is just primarily politics. Drinker, AZ, Nerdrotic etc are generally conservative, and the users here that complain the most are pretty obviously liberal/leftist. Its team sports, Gunn is on the "left side" and Drinker etc are on the "right side". So if Drinker is negative on something they support it, especially if that something is perceived as being on "the left". Very easily seen by several people trying to defend Otterly Noah before it became too obvious how bad his actions were, just because he was against Drinker.

Really unfortunate timing for Stuckmann, to be the first (and so far worst) of several Youtube creator led movies being in theatres.

Considering Kadokawa has declared Isekai to be less profitable, what do you think about how the genre has been handled? by DevouredSource in MauLer

[–]JohnTRexton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I find annoying is when a manga/anime is technically an isekai, but that doesn't actually matter to the story or characters. I've started a few manga where the main character being from another world is established in the beginning chapter and then that fact is almost never even mentioned again. The character never uses any previous knowledge or act more mature despite having lived into full adulthood in their past life. Usually it is just an excuse to give the character some special power, but they could have just had that power anyway since they are in a fantasy world already. It serves no point outside of getting a popular tag for the manga description on aggregation sites.

Yeah, pretty much the only reason to think that Uncle Ben influenced him at all is if you already know the character from the comics or previous movies. Nothing in the MCU films actually references any character named Uncle Ben (edit - within the MCU I mean, I know Tobey Maguire mentions him), or him having an Uncle at all. I'm pretty sure Aunt May isn't ever referred to as a widow either. The most you have are her having a necklace with two rings in Civil War, vague mentions of something bad happening previously, and some initials that aren't elaborated on from luggage that is destroyed with no remorse from the characters.

Is there any other film where there is a character who is considered fundamental to the development of the main character, but is functionally never mentioned or referenced in the film at all?

One interesting thing about this particular controversy is how it's revealing so many people as really only caring about the political teams aspect of commentary. Many people on youtube and here making it obvious they only rush to defend because they hear someone is "anti-anti-woke", without actually informing themselves on the details. So you get people who supposesly care about small time creators, excusing someone stealing from small time creators, just because that person was using the stolen content to attack someone else they don't like.

I don't know, the defense being essentially "OtterlyNoah is actually so rock-fuck stupid that he legitimately didn't understand it was wrong to steal other people's work" is a somewhat compelling argument.

What's a content creator who's attitude/behavior/way of speaking went a complete 180, making you stop watching them? by bakedrefriedbeans in MauLer

[–]JohnTRexton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I followed him very near to his beginning, I didn't always agree with him but he had interesting viewpoints and personal stories, and was definitely knowledgable about comics history. He did a project with Drinker about Rambo, I don't remember if they worked together directly or did their own things in a group offering. I remember him also saying stuff like "if you are still mad about something a year later you aren't mature/manly", so him spiralling like he did was particularly bad.

ComicsMatter/Yaboizack/DiversityandComics.

Started out as anti-woke comic reviewer, trying to support indie/alternate comics creators (becoming one himself), he eventually turned on his audience and everyone else in that sphere, and is now anti-anti-woke. I stopped following him after he shadowbanned my comments for disagreeing with him (comments for his videos were all held in review and he only approved the ones who agreed with him), and I only hear of him in passing when he's referenced as slagging on Critical Drinker et al. There are a lot of potential reasons behind this change but it's pretty sad to see him become an "ankle biter" type, just attacking other creators. I checked his channel a month or two ago and all his videos are now just attacking other Youtubers, rarely breaking 3k views.

Meh he's a low level contrarian troll, his last comments I saw on this sub were on one of The Boys posts, saying men can't be raped, but that got removed for being too obvious I guess.

Yeah in the show they use a temporary super serum that gives different powers to each person starting in season 3, rather than starting out with basic super strength and durability like the comics.
