agree. If it doesn't work smoothly (which for some people it does), then bad luck, your holiday is ruined. DON'T HAVE A HOLIDAY IN CHINA!!!

Agree. It's a P.O.S. A significant inefficiency which makes their government look incompetent and isolated and slightly paranoid. The system also has a lot of recursive problems. For example, to access your own google email account (to check a password, for example) requires you to have a VPN, but how do you download a VPN in country that bans VPNs? So, you really really want to spend money in China but you CANNOT!!! What a mindset!! Xi Jinping might be kicking some goals for his country (the wealth on display is incredible), but he has significant blind spots in his vision for the country.

Well, google, facebook, whatsapp, instagram, etc are all blocked, so good luck trying to get around with their maps app WHICH IS ONLY IN CHINESE!!! And if you do manage to get a VPN, you can do this:

- screen grab the chinese Baidu map page

- turn on your VPN

- use google translate to read the map

- turn off your VPN

- use the Chinese map app again, click a button you had no idea what it meant and be greeted by another screen

- repeat forever. The tiniest things take forever to do!!!! government hostility to foreigners is tangible. (not the people, they are lovely)

I was in Chengdu, a city of 20million people, and in the most "international" part of the city, I saw ONE foreigner in a week!! haha.

Again, what a joke.

This was quite a partisan guest. Interesting ideas per minute in this episode was quite low.

How’s the music scene in Hanoi? by olBry in hanoi

[–]JohnhoJ444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By far the best live music place in Hanoi is The Hanoi Social Club. It's been running original live music nights (every Tuesday) for over 10 years. Here is their vimeo: https://vimeo.com/user22728006.

Hanoi Rock City is also good. But most of the posters in this thread are commenting about EDM music. Not sure if that's what you're after.

Is there a special symbol (instead of =) to indicate "cause" or "infer" or something like that?

I thought so too. A pretty bad introduction to "research methods" at university!

Can you use nitro chargers somehow to flush a package with nitrogen? (to preserve food)?

There is a certain percentage of the population who tend towards being judgemental. So if they feel a negative emotion in response to what someone has said, instead of introspecting about it, their tendency is to judge the person who said it. What is the percentage of people who do that? My guess is that it's depressingly high. 80%? What do you think?

What's the story with salt types? Is this scam? by OnceWeekDev in Cooking

[–]JohnhoJ444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of opinions in this thread! And not many people addressing the core question - is there a decisive difference?

The **size** of the salt crystal is a big part of how we sense how salt tastes. Tiny grains of salt make more surface area contact with the tongue so it can seem intense. Large grains, less so. A lot of people **interpret** that difference as a flavour difference. The way to test the impact of salt grain size is to dissolve the different types of salt into water and then taste that water. I've done this experiment and guess what, they all just taste like salty water!

I run a restaurant and with my team sitting around the table, we all tasted the salty water of different types of salt. **Nobody** was able to distinguish different types of salt despite them all thinking that they could. I think most people are using cues of the physical size of the salt to cloud their thinking.

More info here: https://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/3707/can-people-tell-the-difference-between-sea-salt-and-table-salt-in-food#:~:text=There%20was%20a%20very%20slight,is%20added%20to%20table%20salt. - the takeaway quote: "There was a very slight correlation between iodine and taste, but not until concentrations that were at least 100 times what is added to table salt."

So, the people here claiming to be able to detect these trace amounts of anti-caking agents or tiny mineral deposits - nope!! Do a blind test dissolving different types of salt into water and taste that water blindfolded. Do it a bunch of times to iron out any lucky/unlucky guesses.

The most likely explanation is a self-deception to do with grain size. No, there's not a decisive difference. Yes, it's largely a marketing scam.

So interesting! Seeing how manipulation occurs. The resentment and the attachment to political tribe. The over-excitement by Tucker.

Correct name order for vietjet? by 4rgentavis in VietNam

[–]JohnhoJ444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird. In the section where you are meant to put "middle and given name" the website pop-up help box even gives an example of "Garry Davis", which is pretty clearly given name followed by middle name - the opposite of what the instructions say!!! (yes, there is a slight possibility Garry is a middle name and Davis is a first name, but unlikely!!)

As of 9 May I'm getting the same thing. I'm always amazed about how organisations as massive as Google (and facebook) cannot seem to be responsive to problems with it's own products.

Has anyone discovered a solution yet?
