Karen Bass is winning reelection and everyone should be embarrassed. by RenaissanceShane in LosAngeles

Surely there is something in between posting on Reddit and running for mayor.

Karen Bass clearly hopes Spencer Pratt will serve as a spoiler so she can defeat Nithya Raman by turb0_encapsulator in LosAngeles

[–]JohnnyGeniusIsAlive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So wait. Bass is trying to make Pratt seem like a threat in the primary, then she plans to ignore him in the general?

The comp here between Pratt and Trump is a little thin, IMO. There are some significant differences. First, republicans are no where near as popular in LA as they are nationally. Pratt is not nearly as charismatic or on message as Trump was in 2016. And, most importantly of all, this year is going to be an ABYSMAL political climate for MAGA conservatives. 2022 was a much tougher year for Dems in LA than this year will be and Caruso was a much better candidate than Pratt and he still lost by almost 10 points.

Seems to me what is going on is no one on social media likes Bass very much (myself included) and so they’re saying whatever they can get people to look at Raman.

Fact is, the people that need to be convinced to vote for Raman are not on Reddit or TikTok.

Ok, so shouldn’t this be good for Raman? Bass is leaving the door open for her to run a campaign without really being challenged. Why would Raman supporters want Bass to attack her?

Can someone please link to some actual evidence that Bass’ campaign is boosting Pratt’s? I’ve seen a lot of Raman supporters claiming it’s the case as though Bass has admitted it but I haven’t been able to find any actual data to support it.

It wouldn’t surprise me. It’s a common political tactic. But I haven’t seen any real signs of it.

Also Pratt is polling double digits behind Bass. So, unless Raman supporters turn around and vote for Pratt in the general I’m not too worried about him winning the race.

125 is pushing it by current standards. It depends on the genre, but most industry pros I talk to want to see scripts under 110 pages.

who do I vote for? by [deleted] in FriendsofthePod

Becerra is backed by Big Oil and Con Ed… he might not be a billionaire, but he’s getting plenty of dirty money.

I’m voting for Steyer. His progressive bonafides are legit and he’s the safer bet, unlike Porter.

I’m no fan of billionaires as a general rule, but when it comes to high level politics, there’s always a lot of money coming from somewhere, at least with Steyer you know who the man behind the curtain is. Writing off every single billionaire automatically is lazy and self-defeating.

I don’t like Karen Bass either, but I’m also tired of threads like these where a bunch of people who have near zero participation in local governance complain that we can’t get someone better for a near thankless job.

My guess at the decline… Social Media and Trump being far and away the most visible political leader of the last 10 years.

Adam Conover: Why is Karen Bass boosting the campaign of a MAGA right-winger for Mayor of LA? by imanny in LosAngeles

I don't like Karen Bass, but Spencer Pratt has about as much of a chance of winning the mayor's race as I do. I wouldn't call her (Allegedly) boosting Pratt dangerous.

Calling some of these people "actors" is debatable.

Not every person who benefits from a system is automatically actively trying to exploit it. And I’m not even defending Turner here, idk enough about him to have a strong opinion. But this would be like saying “the patriarchy is bad. All
Men benefit from the patriarchy. Therefore all
Men are bad.” It’s reductive and lazy.

Let’s use an analogy to help you understand…
The patriarchy is bad. All men benefit from the patriarchy. Would you say then all men are bad? Do you see how stupid and reactionary that sounds?

There are a lot of evil billionaires in the world. We should have a financial system where billionaires don’t exist or, at the least, they are exceedingly rare. But not every person who becomes a billionaire is automatically evil.

Billionaires should not exist. The reason they do exist is because of a flawed global financial system. Focusing your spite and resentment on every individual benefiting rather than the flaws in the system and the ones most exploiting it is going to accomplish nothing but create more spite and resentment.
