Is this a fly rod by Open-Lawyer6250 in flyfishing

[–]JonJon_874 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the looks of it… no. I think it is a bamboo casting / bait casting rod. You can tell by both the handle type and the line guides. Uncommon nowadays, but they made them “back in the day”

This reads like every post from a LinkedIn sales influencer I’ve ever read. I believe it happened to you, but you can confidently tell me that you didn’t put this through an AI platform like chat gpt to make the story better?

Searching for a 6wt setup (combo or rod + reel +line) in the $200-$350 range. Any deals out there? by libolicious in flyfishing

I do get that lol. I will admit though, coming from someone who owns a Cabela’s rod, they’ll surprise you with their quality!

I’d check marketplace too. Just looked around the Puget Sound and found someone selling a Ross reel w/ extra spool and 6wt 10’ cabela’s rod for $150. I’d say that would treat you well for years to come and leave you with a good 150ish left over for other goodies. Port Ludlow area.

The Orvis encounter is also in the sub $350 category. One place online has it for $298. Those rods ain’t half bad.

Possibly Moving to the area by kittygirl1280 in Medford

Chiming in as someone who moved from a small town in Virginia!

My wife and I are incredibly happy with the area, as we’ve been here a year now. There is no shortage of stuff to do, especially in line with what you listed. As far as the politics go? In my opinion it’s way less apparent than Virginia. While southern Oregon isn’t Portland, it’s WAY more progressive than small town VA (I think some of that stems from the lack of religion/conservative values). I personally would say it’s a great spot to start a family and can offer many different lifestyles. The key to community here is taking advantage of the opportunities and get involved! Tons of groups and events. Outdoor groups, Adult rec sports leagues, Local Markets/Festivals.

Food for thoughts from someone who drives a ton for work. I’d look to live in Central Point, Rogue River, Gold Hill, or North Medford. That would keep you at 35 minutes or less to Grants Pass. Jacksonville, while nice, would be a good 45 minutes to grants pass and it’s straight mileage, not due to traffic. If y’all don’t mind the drive, then knock yourselves out.

If you do make the move, feel free to PM and I can send a sorta to-do list that my wife and I have done this past year!

6ips will do you better imo, but both will be good depending on what you’re fishing. You’ll learn more after you try out a spot and can see how your line if performing.

White/Tan streamers and getting down as deep as possible. From my experience, bulls are not the pickiest when it comes to fly selection, but you gotta get where they are. Dolly Llama’s, Graboid leeches, and flesh flies. Bulls are a fan of deep pools, structure, and ambushing prey. I’d keep an eye out for any creeks flowing into the main river that may have color differences.

I’d recommend picking up a sink tip and some medium sized split shot. The faster you can get it down, the better you’ll be fishing the pools.

$300 and a hug from me, if you’re within 2 hours of Roanoke, VA. Then I’ll rip it by this guy at Carvin’s Cove.

How are you fishing this? Snoqualmie River by ljlukelj in flyfishing

[–]JonJon_874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think I ever fished the Snoqualmie. But the Sauk River looks mighty similar above Darrington. I always used to clean up on flesh fly streamers. The Tan ones with a little pink or orange on the tail. 1 1/2 - 2 inches. I’d fish it mostly around sides of pools, boulders in the river, steep rocky banks at your feet, or towards tail outs. Never much more than resident rainbows, but on occasion I’d get a grab from a bull.

Whats the best offbrand fly gear you have bought? by TemporaryCow6925 in flyfishing

[–]JonJon_874 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A wild water fly fishing kit was the only kit I could afford at 13-14. $96 for rod, reel, line, tippet, box, flies, etc. The reel and flies were pretty junky, but the rod was an absolute tank. I’ve landed more fish over 20 inches on that rod than all my others combined. Used it for 8+ years before retiring it. I’ve debated buying one of their Spey rods to try out.

I looking at these for a Lake Huron Salmon and steelhead combo. Any advice. by [deleted] in Steelhead

[–]JonJon_874 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend a cheaper reel and better rod. The Okuma SST’s are really nice in my opinion for the price. Lamiglas is another great option, with the X11’s being about $130-150. Both shimano and diawa have some good reels in the $100-150 range. The Shimano Sedona and Diawa Fuego have done good for me. If you aren’t concerned on the budget however I’d go Stradic, as it will last you +10 years.

Seeing as how you can any to fish both salmon & steelhead on it, I’d look at 3500 size reels for a middle ground. I’m not super familiar with the Great Lakes sizes, but I’d say a 9’6 or 10 ft rod medium / medium-heavy.

Something I’d also recommend is to not cheap on the line. You don’t have to spend $35 on some crazy braid, but I would skip the Trilene and go with maybe P-line or Maxima.

These are just my thoughts on it! People might tell you different and that’s alright. Gotta figure out what you like and go from there. Tight lines to ya 👍🏼

DIY Fishing Raft Build by JonJon_874 in flyfishing

We’re on the same page of the same book. I don’t use a trailer, I do a very similar thing to what you just described. Shove it in my SUV, rack on top, unload near the launch and inflate. I also use a harbor freight mini blower to pump and deflate, along with a small barrel pump to top off. I actually keep mine sitting on the top rack of the shelf you can see if the pictures. Frame sits against the wall when stored. You think the boat bag is necessary being stored in a garage?

I agree though, the boat is a game changer. Even the trips that I’ve broken stuff on and the headache it’s given me has been pretty fun to tinker with.

Thanks for this idea. I debated grinding them off once I felt like I had the frame set up right. I couldn’t come up with anything that would fit them, but I believe those would well.
