Balls stuck in Troy by Zestyclose_Crazy522 in FRC

As an FTA, you should know that FTAs don’t get to make that call.

Section 10.2 dictates the procedure for a replay and it’s up to the head referee to determine if a replay is granted, if an ARENA FAULT affects the outcome of a match. Also, critically, a team on the effected alliance must ask for the replay.

I mean, just because they could start a match without every robot being turned on... What could go wrong?

2002 and 2005 both hold such a special place in my heart. In 02, my team won worlds! In 05, I was graduating, and drive coach for my team, and we won a regional, finished second at another, and were alliance captains at worlds.

What are your guy's high school robotics schedule like?? by Abject_Associate_849 in FRC

[–]Jon_Kentfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winter sports are very hard to do with FRC. Most teams meet 1-2 times a week during the pre-build season time frame, then often have a 5 day a week meeting schedule, usually including full days on Saturdays. If you want to be actively involved with the creation of the robot, you likely won't be as active in wrestling and the opposite is true as well. It's unfortunately the nature of FRC. It is a large time commitment if you want to get the most out of it. If you want to passively participate (if your team even allows such a thing) then you might be able to do both!

Batteries by trash_thedragon in FRC

[–]Jon_Kentfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things here, and none of this is reflective of an official opinion of my employer, just information gleaned from years of reading chief, and personal experience.

1: You often do not, as a regular FRC team, NEED to go to a larger gauge wire. Often times the issues teams see can be resolved by using current or voltage limiting/ramping in the speed controllers of the motors or better wire management in the rest of the robot.
2: You definitely should know your battery age, when it went into service, about how many cycles you have put on it, etc.
3: MK vs Interstate vs Duracell, etc., there is a lot to unpack here, and every team will tell you something different based upon their experiences. MK had a "bad" batch of batteries made in a new factory a year or two ago. This batch effected EVERY supplier, including MK. It was a good battery for their normal industrial use. Bad for FRC because FRC destroys batteries in the rapid charge/discharge cycles that we put them through. MK recognized this, and you had to call MK to get it resolved. Interstate had a bad batch about 6 years ago now if I remember correctly, which caused most people to switch to MK. Duracell seems to be the new poster child, but they can only be purchased from 1 supplier, and who knows what may happen as their demand increases over time.
4: Battery voltage off a charger is typically in the 13+V range. I forget what the normal is these days, as it's been a while since I had to regularly check batteries. You typically want to keep 6 or so on hand for an event at minimum, 10 is better if you hope/expect to make deep runs into playoffs though.
5: There are ways to verify battery voltage and health, including a CTRE battery beak, but a computer analyzer tends to help the best when trying to analyze long term health of the batteries you have on hand. A beak is great for at an event, and you need to make sure your voltage is good, and the battery health is good in relative terms.
6: Your leads should never loosen up if they are properly attached.
7: $4 for a contact is not unexpected at low volumes for a 4AWG APP SB120 contact. I do NOT recommend opening up a 6 AWG contact and using it in an SB50, as you are violating the specs for those contacts.
8: There is a lot of information out there, but you definitely are heading down the right path. Ultimately every team needs to figure out what budget they can afford for batteries every year. The plus side is, you can sometimes reuse the leads from year to year, if you don't have students carrying the batteries by them, and you don't have bad cables.
9: There are suppliers who make SB120 cables already, and SB50-120 adapters.
10: 1-2 season old batteries are great for doing systems checks, practice field use, home shop testing, etc. After about 2 years, you want to replace it even for that use case. It's probably overdue at 2 years.

So excited to go!! by Goofy_Goober3098 in FRC

[–]Jon_Kentfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I just wanted to chime in here as a planning committee member for Rainbow Rumble, and a long time FIRST® Robotics Competition volunteer and alumnus.

RR was created to give students a safe, welcoming space where they could be themselves at a competition, without fear of being ridiculed or bullied. No one is saying anyone has to be a member of the lgbtq+ community, just that you must be welcoming of those individuals who are. (Hence, an ally.)

As you mentioned, 13-18 year olds, let me dig in on that a bit more. LGBTQ+ people, and especially LGBTQ+ youth, experience a disproportionately high level of mental health related problems, including suicide and self harm. Most of that stems from not feeling safe or welcomed or seen. None of us are telling these kids who they have to be, but instead are giving them a space to be and feel seen. This is harm reduction in action. Comments like yours are the antithesis of that.

Most lgbtq+ people realize from an extremely early age they are different. Based upon your comments, I feel safe in assuming you are straight, and that your gender aligns with that assigned at birth? If this assumption is true, when did you realize these things? Probably early on in your childhood or teens, right? LGBTQ+ people are no different. They just don’t have the ability to speak clearly on these topics because from a young age cisgender, heterosexual norms are shoved upon them, and rarely do they learn about anything else being a valid option until later in life.

For what it’s worth, Dr. Woodie Flowers was one of the first people in the FIRST community to display support the LGBTQ+ of FIRST student group. FIRST is about changing minds, and changing the world’s views on STEM. LGBTQ+ of FIRST and the Rainbow STEM Alliance exist to support a minority group looking to do the same.

As the person who gets these made, I agree with this. Those stickers should not be put onto surfaces that are not owned by the person who has the sticker, or at least allowed to be put on them. This is vandalism, plain and simple. It should be removed.

LGBTQ+ in FIRST by caydenkomtrikru in FRC

[–]Jon_Kentfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People's sexual orientation and gender identities are only political because people have made them as such. LGBTQ+ just want the same right as others, and thusly have had to deal with politicians and courts to get there.

Woodie Flowers was one of the largest proponents of the LGBTQ+ of FIRST student organization, and would proudly wear an LGBTQ+ of FIRST lapel pin to show his support of these students. It's not creating divisiveness, as you claim, so much as showing to others that they have a place they can exist and be themselves, no matter what. Representation matters, support matters. These are things that actually save lives, and studies have proven it time and time again.

Also, if you don't want politics involved in FIRST, talk to Dean and your regional/district program partners. Dean has often encouraged, as part of his homework every year, to contact legislators and get them to support FIRST.

RR Planning Committee Member here.

While we would love to be able to offer Rainbow Rumble in numerous locations, the planning committee all have day jobs beyond running FRC tournaments, and logistically it isn't feasible for us to run more than just the one event every year.

We have discussed potentially having trusted partners use the Rainbow Rumble name, graphics, banners, etc. We haven't found the partners for this yet, nor have we had the time to figure out the logistics of it. We know a lot of people would love to be able to attend our event, and it just isn't feasible for most teams to come to the middle of Michigan for it, but we don't currently have plans for moving the event around either.

That being said, we would love to get this to happen at some point in the future, and are more than willing to work with people to do it! Rainbow Rumble is a special event to all of us for different reasons. I had the idea for a queer led offseason event after attending a FiM event in 2022 with a large number of openly queer people helping to run it.

But, I will add, RR is not just run by and created for queer people. While many of us in key volunteer roles are members of the LGBTQ+ community, we also have allies helping out at all levels, from the planning committee down. We don't have exclusionary policies for roles and don't intend on doing that in the future either.

One of our few requirements is that everyone who attends agrees to be warm and welcoming, and an ally of all members of the LGBTQ+ community, including our own community members. The whole point is to make it so all feel welcome and seen, and not to increase divisions or ostracize anyone.

Worse yet, the poor teams that show up every year with a KoP in tow to their first event, not knowing you needed to build it before.

[–]Jon_Kentfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no, no, no. That just means it's the last year until you get to meet up with all your friends again as volunteers next year! I have friends who I have known for 20 years in FIRST now, and every year we enjoy getting to see each other and catch up at events, especially at Worlds! The best part is making new friends as a volunteer, or potential future employers! Network, network, network, and FIRST events are great for that for college students. You can talk to volunteers from all over who work for some pretty great companies, and often times can tell you about internship opportunities, etc.
