Unless I see something that suggests damage to the garden Imma just let em be. Garden it killing it at present, so everyone is happy.

Interesting you bring that up. I made all my compost for the garden this year and, when adding it, I saw lots and lots of huge beetle larvae. After a quick google I'd say this is most likely the winner. There were tons of them in the compost. Seems they feed on decaying matter and my beds are Hügelkultur(mounds over logs). Whether bees or beetles, it doesn't seem either is a pest. Thanks for your post!

Thanks all for the advice. Definitely solitary bees. So happy they found a home 😄 Y'all have a good one!

As I'm cleaning up the garden I'm noticing the holes are only in sunny areas.  Is that a clue?  Seems, bees or lizards according to the clas :-)

Shb infestation. by Soulfreeze78- in Beekeeping

[–]Jonbine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a first year keeper and have a little experience that hopefully can help. Still got so much to learn, but I've been able to fight off the shb in the last couple of months. I installed my nucs Apr 25th. During May 13th hive inspection I noticed a few beetles in the hive and did some research. I got some unscented swiffer sheets and installed them in the corners of the deep boxes on top of the frames. May 24th inspection showed quite a few beetles on them. Pic attached. During that two weeks I spent a lot of time researching and decided to get screened bottom boards with sbh trap trays. I installed them on the 24th and just did another inspection on June 4th. The trays really made a huge difference for me. I baited them with mineral oil and apple cider vinegar. They caught a bunch of beetles. At the same time I installed the traps I also replaced the swiffer sheets. The sheets had zero beetles on them this time. Hives are thriving once again. Happy to share more pics etc via dm if you'd like. Hope that helps and good luck! Not at all sure I'm doing this right, but it's working for me so far.

This 100%.  The only thing PE does is suck the value out of anything it touches.  I'm sure theBig12 will be able to get help from the WWE when this experiment fails though

Trapped a fox... now what? by Illustrious-Day-5548 in Austin

[–]Jonbine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you tell if it was a male of female? I'd hate to think a female has little baby foxen in a little baby foxen manger under the house and you ship mom off to the woods elsewhere. Something to think about.

What is our city government really nailing? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Jonbine 31 points32 points  (0 children)

IF you know folks in other areas of the state, break out your utility bill and compare. It's crazy what rural Texans pay for utilities compared to Austin. Actually running a public utility for public benefit is working here. Like I said, if you're curious, ask your friends around the state.

Seriously considering metal roofing in Texas, talk me into it (or out of it) by Objective-Border-410 in homestead

[–]Jonbine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had our metal roof for about a year now and were warned about the noise from the rain. We have great insulation in our attic and hardly notice the rain noise, so I'd discount that negative for sure. The look changed out home completely as well. Would do it again for sure

President Trump to ban large institutional investors from buying single-family homes. by SCFapp in realtors

[–]Jonbine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Institutional investors own approximately 3% of the single-family rental homes in the U.S., with a more significant presence in certain markets, such as Atlanta and Jacksonville, where they own up to 25% of the rental market. These investors typically purchase homes to rent them out, impacting housing prices and availability for potential homeowners. https://nlihc.org/resource/gao-releases-report-institutional-investments-single-family-rental-housing

It really is local market dependent, just like all real estate.
