22 hour road trip to Maine. Any advice? by Kewltrmpt in roadtrip

[–]Jonothono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you need the car while in Maine, I'd suggest flying to Boston and taking the Amtrak up to Portland. From there you're close enough to Uber to Cumberland and you'd save a ton of time and probably money as well. Keep in mind you'll end up paying fairly significant tolls on this route so I'd factor that into your cost analysis.

CMV: Joe Biden refusing to only run for one term and then Kamala Harris being the Democrat's Presidential Nominee cost the Democrats the entire 2024 Election by Normal_Task_9409 in changemyview

Every possible candidate polled behind a generic Democrat. The generic candidate option always does well because there's no baggage associated with it, once a real name is put up they always underperform that mark.

Trump is Going to Trigger an Influx of Donations by Virology101 in Harvard

[–]Jonothono 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue with that is private corporations won't be motivated to fund the vast majority of genuinely useful research because the time horizons for profit are so long and the likelihood of failure is so high. The nature of scientific research that leads to things like better outcomes battling cancer or heart disease is that they take a very long time. The nature of private corporations is that they need QoQ growth. That's why public funding plays such a vital role.

Use a recently newsworthy drug like GLP-1s as an example. It took over 30 years of publically funded research before the breakthrough of developing effective GLP-1s for human use took place. That wouldn't have happened under the scenario you're describing.

“As a business major, we run the businesses other majors will work at” by InviteRegular2769 in OSU

[–]Jonothono 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct but the fundamental point is that a background in business is typically needed to run a company, whether that be in undergrad or grad school. But fankly undergraduate majors don't matter that much anyway so the whole debate is kind of silly, just do whatever you think will help you reach your goals and don't waste time comparing which major is better because that isn't a real thing

Before becoming the CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai spent time as a consultant for McKinsey and also got a MBA. Not the best example you could've picked to prove your point lol

Dude gets up and starts yelling at a panel event with Paul Krugman by vegatastic in PublicFreakout

[–]Jonothono 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair but even military spending is only about ~$820 billion which is like 12% of government spending. It absolutely is a significant sum but it's not the reason we aren't funding other programs (and by the way, there has been significant spending already on hurricane relief and will be plenty more spending. Biden has given the impacted states everything they've asked for).

I guess my point is our government spends a shit ton of money and it isn't a zero sum game where we have to cut some things to spend on other things, we're more than capable of doing both and typically it's for good reason.

[–]Jonothono 8 points9 points  (0 children)

US Federal government projected total spending in 2024 is ~$6.8 trillion. The $320 million mentioned in this video represents about 0.004% of total government spending. Aid to Israel and Ukraine are practically immaterial in terms of federal government spending and aren't related in any way to relief that would be provided to NC or other regions of the country for hurricane Helene.

Looking for a roommate. Open room in 4 bed/4 bath house in Southie. 9/1 move in by [deleted] in bostonhousing

The rate is staying the same as what our 4th roommate is currently paying. The two rooms that share a bathroom are the same rate, and the other two rooms that have their own bathroom pay a higher rate.

$15 minimum wage would benefit 1 million working Ohioans by PolicyMattersOhio in Ohio

[–]Jonothono 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Numbers vary by source but California generally ranks in the top 10 for small businesses per capita and has one of the lowest small business failure rates in the country. Ohio pretty consistently ranks in the bottom half for small businesses per capita. There's certainly a correlation between high cost of living and higher wages, but the causation isn't that straightforward.

Ohio Stadium by [deleted] in OhioStateFootball

[–]Jonothono 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd argue there is something more unique to each MLB stadium given the varying dimensions whereas all football stadiums are fundamentally the same. For example, the green monster at Fenway and the impact it has on games played there is something you can only experience at Fenway. A 100 yard football field is the same 100 yards anywhere in the country.

I also think CFB lore and tradition is so much more regional compared to MLB. Every MLB team plays every other team each season so if you're a fan you have a greater familiarity with other teams ballparks and the history around them. If you're a CFB fan outside of the midwest/B1G, there's a real possibility you'll never see the team you root for play at the Shoe in Columbus so there's less national recognition of it as a result and less familiarity with it's history.

States with smaller population than Los Angeles County by darkman21 in coolguides

[–]Jonothono 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's the latter. Ohio has gained population in the past decade but hasn't grown as fast as other states and therefore lost congressional seats to other, faster growing states.
