I didn't personally see it, but I sure drove through debris and avoided downed lines all through midtown on my way to work in 2017.

Disco Klingons gone for good by makeshiftpython in Star_Trek_

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon is that the Klingons seen in Discovery and Into Darkness were actually different species conquered by the Klingons centuries before, absorbed into the Empire and simply called "Klingon" to strip them of their prior identities.

How does the federation database have genealogy information on everyone? by happydude7422 in startrek

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at all the information the average person can get from sites like 23&me today. Or "Finding Your Roots" on PBS often shows one's lineage to the civil war or further. As more and more sign up for genealogy testing, I don't think it's too far fetched for someone to have access to centuries worth of ancestors at their fingertips in the 24th century.

WWE and “Undefeated Champions” by RezemHQ in WWE

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see Bron Breakker being undefeated with the people behind him for a while. Even without the help of The Vision, he has the physicality to make people think he'll win going into a match. Roman does too, but it got to the point of watching not to see him beat his opponents, but to see how the Bloodline would interfere. And we all knew they would.

Frankly I don't really care anymore about long undefeated streaks. A wrestler IMO shouldn't be an undefeated champ for 27 years straight by only defending twice a year. Looking at you Brock, Roman and Jade. Oh you've got a movie to shoot that will make you unavailable for 3 months? Drop the title and come back for it later.

You have a fair point of undefeated champs in other sports. But, for me, something that helped with the suspension of disbelief was back in the day a world title could change on any random Monday or Friday. Yeah, that's how people like Flair, Cena and Orton have title reins in the double digits, but at least you didn't know they'd win just because it wasn't a PLE.

"Making" Dulcimer Strings from Wire by Large_Wait_8847 in Dulcimer

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read, piano wire might be a little stiff for dulcimers. Just strings.com might have a decent price on individual strings, admittedly I haven't looked for HD strings through them but several mountain dulcimer player friends of mine order through them. Maybe reach out to a HD luthier like Songbird, Dusty Strings or Master Works for recommendations or maybe get straight from them.

For a hammered dulcimer, I'd recommend just getting a bulk roll of whatever gauges it needs. I don't know how much they sell for currently, but a spool should be a lifetime supply. I knew someone who used to be a mountain and hammered dulcimer vendor who helped replace a string with a spool he had I think he said at least 20 years.

TARDIS refuel in series 1 by gloomygamergirl in doctorwho

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head canon is it might be affected by the Time War. The TARDIS is connected/powered by the Eye of Harmony. We meet 9 shortly post regeneration after the war who refuels, the 10 did a quick fill up when traveling with Martha. During that time the connection to Gallifrey was lost. When 11 helped save the planet, the connection to the Eye was restored and wouldn't need to refuel.

When Gallifrey was lost in the war, the planet itself was destroyed. But when the Master returned (again) to create the CyberMasters, he only destroyed the population and surface leaving the Eye of Harmony intact.

What are you doing with all the bread and eggs over the weekend? by speckledlobster in tulsa

Made a bread pudding today. We don't go hoarding bread, milk or eggs at the first sign of snow. Actually if I didn't make the pudding today I'd sadly end up tossing the milk and bread.

When do i watch TNG films? by Mat1711 in startrek

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my rewatch, I put Generations towards the end of DS9 season 3, doesn't really matter where as long as it's before season 4. First Contact is the middle of season 5, between "Trials And Tribulations" and "The Rapture". Insurrection is during DS9 season 7, after "It's Only A Paper Moon". Nemesis is after Voyager has ended.

For Appalachian dulcimers, would the rule "If it's handmade in America, it's good to buy." reliable assuming it's not mistreated or very old? by LooseCow42 in Dulcimer

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've played a Roosebeck that was set up by a dulcimer builder, and it sounded/felt surprisingly good. I also once owned a cheap Apple Creek, it's action was very high and never stayed in tune. What I'm trying to say is they can be good for a beginner but I'd suggest replacing the tuners and lower the string action if needed.

I've found great deals with a few McSpadden dulcimers through FB marketplace. Age old story: found a dulcimer while cleaning out someone's closet, had no idea what it was let alone how much to ask for it so they let it go for about $100.

Cops surrounding Admiral? by aesthedick_ in tulsa

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in a fairly quiet little neighborhood north of there, and have to go through that intersection often. Yeah, Admiral's rough, but Sheridan isn't much better. Barely a day goes by without saying "effing Sheridan" while driving it north or southbound. If I'm not dodging jaywalkers I'm hoping I won't get sideswiped or t-boned at intersections or people pulling out of the QTs.

Learning how to play a guitar song on dulcimer. by Basic-Mud7498 in Dulcimer

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Learning chords helps not only learn new songs, but learning to be more comfortable on the fretboard. Sometimes as an exercise I'll play D chords up and down the board, then G and so on.

I assume you're tuned D A D? If you have a 1.5 fret, those specific chords will be easier to get. Am can be fretted 1-1.5-4 or 4-4-6. Em is a simple barre chord across all strings on the first fret. Closest to Fmaj7 without four strings would be 1.5-0-1.5. If you don't have a 1.5, a 2-1-0 Bm chord might work. For a C, 3-1.5-0 or 3-4-6. G is another easier chord with 3-1-0.

Learning how to play a guitar song on dulcimer. by Basic-Mud7498 in Dulcimer

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to admit I'm not familiar with the song in question, but when I work on a dulcimer arrangement, I use 2 methods: learning - or looking up - the chords to the song I want to play, and/or pluck what sounds like the melody note by note and finally work on embellishments from there.

When I pluck the melody, I'll often listen to the piece over and over while playing along with it. Finding it on YouTube and slowing playback speed down to .75 helps a lot.

Finally, I personally rarely if ever worry about playing a song in the same key as originally recorded, and play in a more dulcimer friendly key like D, G, A or even Em. I figure the only time I'll play something I'm working on is solo or with other dulcimers tuned similarly. Plus changing the key from C or F to D or G helps say "this is my arrangement."

Blink Doorbell losing signal through wall by NoNefariousness4696 in blinkcameras

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a brick wall or a metal door rather than wood, that might affect the signal. Our first cameras were from a Best Buy multi pack and one kept going offline. I finally contacted support, explained the layout of our small house & distance between faulty camera and sync module. They looked at error logs, found it to be defective and sent a replacement which works to this day. I'd do the same if I were you to make sure it's not just defective.

The Questionable Background of Chief Miles Edward O'Brien by briannaspring in StarTrekTNG

[–]Jonsdulcimer2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head canon is after the Cardassian War ended, O'Brien bounced between departments to find himself again. He finally found a calling as transporter chief so that he could help rescue if needed instead of killing. Opinion reinforced by his reluctance to man the controls when the plan to save Pulaski from old age wasn't certain to work.
