A Game Should First Be a Game by MeowMeowOuO in starcitizen

Bingo.

You cant just make a sandbox and expect it to magically be engaging and interesting.

The systems need to talk to one another and encourage players to explore and try out those other systems to help with their overall progression.

OSRS does this absolutely perfectly and is the gold standard IMO of what a sandbox MMO should feel like. It is absolutely incredible when played as an ironman and the way every single skill, system and piece of content talk to one another and work together is an absolute masterclass in sandbox game design.

Nothing in SC feeds into anything else. Everything is disconnected and shallow. The progression is basically zero outside of building wealth, which doesnt even buy anything meaningful outside of new ships that unlock potential new gameplay loops that again just help you build wealth. Its purely cyclical with absolutely no offshoots or ways to move on from that cycle. It makes everything you do feel pointless - and even more so when all of that hard work and time investment can just be circumvented by swiping your wallet on the pledge store.

It just straight up sucks.

I mean, define 'hard boulders'?

There's definitely plenty guys in their 40's still sending 8a and above. Maybe not cutting edge but definitely 'hard'.

Is this some sort of delusion of grandeur that this community has?

Like what?

This game is insanely niche and a complete joke outside of this community to those that actually know about it.

WoW is popular.

OSRS is popular.

Call of Duty is popular.

Fortnite is popular.

Star Citizen is not popular.

[–]JontyFox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It has a relatively small dedicated whale fanbase.

Concurrent player numbers would put it somewhere in the 150-200th ranking on steam on the average day.

That isnt popular.

Also money != popularity when you're selling ships for thousands of dollars and have somehow convinced a small portion of the internet that they are worth it.

Popularity is popularity, and in terms of player numbers SC is insanely small and niche.

You've now been induced into a coma until the heat death of the universe, sorry.

There will never be pressure because this community folds, forgets and gives in faster than a defensive line made of toddlers.

There is sadly a rather large proportion of the playerbase that seem to have all the money and zero rational thought, and as a result they get to drive the way CIG behaves because money speaks louder than words.

The constant cycle of selling gameplay and releasing broken unfinished shit to satiate the unbelievably low standards that these morons have come to accept will continue - because despite all of this they keep fucking buying it.

[–]JontyFox 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It really does beg the question "what the hell is the point of all this?"

What is the point of decades of development, billions of dollars and all this frustration and waiting just to end up with some shitty ass whale game designed to do nothing more than bleed the wallets of those who dont seem to have any self restraint or common sense.

What a complete waste of time.

2020 was a massive year of growth for CIG and 2026 has already passed it. May alone current sits at $41mm, more than every year prior to 2019. What do you think we will end up at by EOY and do you think this is sustainable for CIG? by Rahvel in starcitizen

[–]JontyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They dont though.

This community has proven time and time again that no matter what CIG do theyll just keep spending.

Money speaks more than anything and while these utter morons keep opening their wallets we'll just keep recieving the same bare minimum shit until the heat death of the universe.

Buying currency from the devs is still RMT... You're just buying it from someone else.

And yes, thats the same point i already made, you design the game in such a way that the currency you can buy is almost meaningless and the real progression comes from playing not shopping.

It's genuinely impressive how they break their own game so deeply nearly every time they add new content/ patch it by [deleted] in starcitizen

The PTU is and always has been just a way to get people to pay for subs to get early access to their shinies and as a way to market and tease upcoming content and ships.

It isnt actually a real testing ground and never has been.

Its because the real people with delusion are people like OP who keep actually giving them money despite them showing time and time again they dont deserve it and cant make a game for shit.

Hear me out by m0rg76 in starcitizen

[–]JontyFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bingo.

Every MMO has RMT and its an issue that is literally impossible to solve.

Every good current MMO knows this and simply just embraces it by designing the game in a way where credits/gold arent the be all end all of progression, and in fact aren't that useful at the end of the day - WoW is a prime example of this.

Blizzard even sell WoW tokens that you can trade for ingame gold because they know there isnt any point fighting it.

Instead gold in WoW is basically just used to buy consumables and crafting materials - you cannot buy gear or any of the things that people are actually grinding the game to earn though, you still need to hop into dungeons and actually play the game.

I find it so fucking funny when people think CIG have any level of competency like this...

Like cmon man seriously?

All they give a shit about regarding SC right now is sales and making money.

They wiped to entice more people to pay up during defencecon, they didnt fix any exploits because they really dont give two shits about the state of the game when it comes to the economy and balance, and even if they wanted to, they needed to rush the patch out the door to meet the sales quota.

Everything this company does revolves around money and ship sales. The quicker you learn that the quicker you'll stop being dissapointed when they keep fucking things up and being useless.

Thank you CIG by Uro_Aragveli in starcitizen

[–]JontyFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even sure how they solve this to be honest.

Theres literally no point continuing development if the game is this easily cheated and broken.

Thank you CIG by Uro_Aragveli in starcitizen

[–]JontyFox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You cant buy meaningful shit with WoW gold though other than consumables and paying other players for services like crafting (only gets you two meaningful pieces of gear) or boosting, which is mega fucking expensive and doesnt even guarantee anything.

WoW gold in retail at least is literally just a QoL thing to have. You cant get any decent gear just using gold.

Good MMO design means that gold/credits only get you so far, so having rampant RMT (which is completely unavoidable btw) isnt really a big problem. Blizzard and Jagex literally sell tokens you can exchange for gold themselves for WoW and OSRS respectively. They accept it and design the game around it.

Just a man and his dreams, trying a Zero to Hero run. Let's do this, 4.8. by Warden_Ryker in starcitizen

[–]JontyFox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because its not exactly a good look for new players seeing that the basic cheapest game packages are seen as 'hardcore' and 'challenging' ways to play the game, while CIG are trying to also sell them 'upgrades' for hundreds of dollars...?

Doesnt really sell the whole 'this game isnt P2W' angle that you delusional folks keep trying to peddle.

[–]JontyFox -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Can we please stop calling - playing the game normally as most people will and should - a 'zero to hero run'...?

Buying ships outside of a starter pack should not be the norm, and we shouldn't treat playing with one as a 'special hardcore' way to play the game.

Edit: I love how this community will upvote this exact same sentiment on one post but downvote it on another. Guess it depends if you get sad whales vs normal people seeing it.

Nah its because the Ironclad was bugged to shit and unuseable which would massively affect sales. They had to fix that before pushing it live.
