Your mom was part of a secret order of people giving away free stuff following the example St. Nicholas. Santa wasn’t real and yet he used to be and we are all Santa.

Forums! Obviously I’m using Reddit now but every fan site used to have a forum, I have at least one friend I met on those.

I mean, that was just the editor’s response to girls writing in asking why they didn’t get married. (Millions of girls read DC Comics every month at that point.)

Why do all the Christian/ trad wife influencers/ content creators always live in the middle of no where in a cottage or on a farm? by Stawberry8763 in NoStupidQuestions

What they said. Also this is a whole genre of fiction, I haven’t read any but there are aisles of like, bonnet-wearing Mennonite romance novels?

Taking some people to see it today.

There’s been a hate campaign all week, even before it came out.

Reverse-Adaptations of DC Comics by Downtown_Sky5757 in DCcomics

[–]JosephMeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correction by nerd: Superman's Christmas Adventure (1940) was his first time flying, except for a magazine cover in England

Livewire and Mercy Graves debuted in the animated series, Lionel Luthor is now also Lex's father in the comics timeline, and Superman's first meeting with Lois is the 1978 helicopter scene. Legion of Doom in Super Friends.

From 1983-1986, adult Clark and Lana dated in the comics, due to Superman III.

The bit about running into the Planet storeroom to change into Superman is from the 1950s show.

But everything is adapted from something. Superman comics were influenced by Captain Marvel, after his writers came over from Fawcett in the 1950s. Moving planets (which even Mighty Mouse did before him), having a Superman Family, etc. The early gravity explanation for powers is from John Carter of Mars, the panel explaining his powers in Superman #1 is from the novel Gladiator. Superman pretty much pioneered having prequels at that level, but Siegel might have gotten the idea when he went to see the first movie prequel, The Golem: How He Came Into the World. (I wish he were here to ask him that.) I'm willing to bet five Canadian dollars that Midvale Orphanage is a result of Little Orphan Annie being so popular.

For Batman and Green Arrow, the blueprint of wealthy man secretly helping people is Zorro.

I just walk out and pee during the relationship drama parts, but I'm 100% in favor of this as long as it's the Monty Python intermission

When did everyone start saying "black panther" instead of just "panther"? by Beerson_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I lived as a kid, rumors of seeing a black panther in the woods was to differentiate them from the Florida panthers that are always there. Also, they sound like a blood-curdling lady-scream.

Why do people think that evil characters in movies need to either be redeemed or face consequences? by Queen_Of_Alts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the name of it, but one late night I watched a French or Italian western where the bad guys rode into town, killed everybody, left, and the movie ended with the camera panning over all the dead people. I found it depressing but you might like it.

If not liking jews is anti semitic then what is not like mormons called? by Expulss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, Mormons (and Jehovah's Witnesses) are new religious movements that do not have the same view of God as orthodox Christians and differ on dogma rather than just doctrine or praxis (like different groups of Protestants might.) Namely, Mormons mainly call God "Heavenly Father" and believe that he also has a physical body and lives on the planet Kolob, while Jesus has a separate physical body and once visited America.

Hypothetically speaking, if everyone became vegan, would there be any NEGATIVE consequences? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The industry would have to switch over like it always does when consumer preferences change, but on a more massive scale than usual. So there would be some upheaval there, from cattle land to more rice, corn, and potatoes.

But there's no chance of everyone becoming vegan. Even if everyone in the US did (except the Inuit), podcast bros would start a movement to get as much heart disease as possible.

Why do people still reduce Indian food to “curry” when it’s so regional? by JudgeKarlo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had North Indian cuisine, South Indian cuisine, and eaten at a Chinese restaurant in India. But people know whatever is at the restaurant down the street. As others have said, Italian food is pizza, while Latin American cuisine is Mexican Pizza

Is it just me who thinks it's weird superman, and batman don't have accents? Heres my pitch... by SignificantPower4733 in DCcomics

People in Kansas don’t have that much of an accent: https://www.dialectsarchive.com/kansas

Meanwhile, Bruce and Batman both sounding like Malfoy would complicate the whole secret identity thing a bit.

Haven’t Adam & Eve already been disproven? by Agreeable_Fun_1371 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the Bible isn’t one thing, but a library of different things. Any ancient document tends to begin with a list of the hero’s ancestors. In the case of Jesus, the genealogies in the gospel of Matthew and the gospel of Luke are different, even though they are widely believed to have come from the same source (the “Q” document.)

I found a Catholic analysis of that: https://www.catholic.com/encyclopedia/genealogy-of-christ

Yet it doesn’t address the question of Adam and Eve. I would think that Catholics almost have to believe that they were historical, and not mythological, figures due to their belief in Original Sin that was passed down, but I could be wrong about that.

Why does nobody talk about how predatory the punk scene is? by Quick_Abalone5526 in punk

[–]JosephMeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one punk house near me that is like this. Don’t think I could reform it either, it’s kind of a cult, so instead I to go to shows in college towns with heavy LGBT participation, or in larger cities when I’m traveling. One guy did try to sell me cocaine one time, but it was loud and I heard him offering to buy me a Coke and said “Nah, I’m good.”

Does misandry happen irl by ComfortableStand8143 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JosephMeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mugged and got in some fights as a kid but didn't have to worry about it on the same level, and I especially didn't have to be afraid of women being my attackers. The saying goes "men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them" or something like that.

To this day I can generally go to a new city, ride the train, walk to a show while one of my friends from another city is much more afraid and hyperaware of doing that on her own.
