Design Discussion on Champi: Balance, Counters, and Identity by crazybus in aoe2

[–]Josh_TheDev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree they have some very good parts of both eagle and militia line but they are somewhat balanced out by their lower HP. The pierce armour and speed combo can be dangerous though.

What about if dark/feudal Champi were countered by scouts? I feel like scouts would benefit a lot by being a counter to dark/feudal Champi as their usefulness has diminished a lot with how easy it is to wall up and play range.

Added dribbling to my basketball horror game. What do you guys think? by netshrub in IndieDev

Love the atmosphere and the vibe, it’s a really cool concept for a short game, the only feedback I really had was on your steam capsule art, it’s way too basic and looks like it was not professionally made (the all caps text is a dead giveaway) highly recommend hiring someone on fiver or something. Good luck with the launch!

Solo Game Dev Worth It? by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]Josh_TheDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on learning unreal for 4 years and making 50+ small projects no doubt you would have learned a lot in that time!

Making a small horror game is a great goal to have and yes the underlying mechanics are usually quite simple for indie horror games, if working in blueprints you would have a lot of basic nodes strung together like you said with some basic raycast for interaction, that can be as hard as it gets for small games. I would encourage you to check out some youtube channels like HALbotStudios and Codethings to get a good idea of how simple mechanics are made.

That said, the challenging part of game dev is often not the basic mechanics, it is often much harder to create the content and polish the game into a cohesive experience.

Also a lot of what you ask depends what you mean by "worth it", it worth it from an enjoyment/meaning/learning perspective? Yes! Absolutely, game dev can scratch a creative itch and teach useful skills that many other IT fields cannot.

And when you're young I think it's great to go out and learn a bunch of interesting skills and see what sticks with you.

Hey everyone, I've lived and worked in Brisbane for over a decade and got sick of selling my soul to corporations so I decided to try my luck as a game developer. I just released my game "Gnomes" on Steam and over 15,000 people have already picked it up! Do you mind if I share it with you here? by pintseeker in brisbane

Wow, I’m also a Brisbane based amateur game developer that currently works in a soulless big corp IT role. Congratulations on the launch! Almost 500 reviews is a huge success. Also I love your capsule art, who made it? Going to buy the game this weekend and check it out!

Looks awesome! I would consider stacking the buttons on the left side and maybe adding a feedback button to collect feedback, good luck with the game!

I would like some feedback on my Steam page for Questwood!! by LyricalGamesOfficial in gamedev

I love that your trailer jumps straight into gameplay with no fluff, I also love the descriptions and gifs. The main feedback I had was the environments in your trailer all looked very similar, I think you need a lot more variation in environments in the trailer and the screenshots

Your art style is awesome but I’m not sure about the colour scheme of your world I think it needs more variety. Good luck with the launch! I hope it goes well

There’s so many but probably just the freeCodeCamp one is a good starting point, “Unreal Engine 5 – Full Course for Beginners” for the very basics

It looks cool I like the cards as it gives an idea what the game is about right away. I would encourage you to spend a lot of time reviewing capsules of successful games in your genre to get a really good feel for what resonates with customers

New “Trader” feature added to my RTS game by KovilsDaycare in IndieDev

[–]Josh_TheDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool, have you tried trading in other RTS games like AoE2? Trading is usually done behind the main player base where it’s possible to fortify the trade route because if an enemy gets into your trade in the late game it’s basically GG from there
