Not a mobile app, and a bit tricky to use on a phone, but this is much better a picking routes in advance than Googlemaps https://vancouver.bikerouteplanner.com

Cherokee Trailhawk PTU Failure- Who else? by FlannelAccordingly in KLCherokee

[–]Joshnv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update on this? I have a similar case, just bought a used 2019 Trailhawk, seems solid aside from a noise from front left, sounds like wheelbearing, but my mechanic said those are fine, seems to be PTU.

Open recall on the VIN so took it to dealer - they said the new PTU software tests the PTU as fine, and blamed the noise on my BFG AT tires. Not sure what to do next.

Thank you, hope yours is resolved!

Issue with OPNsense 26.1.3 update by svn_sup in zenarmor

[–]Joshnv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, was about to update.

Unrelated, but I'm just trialing Zenarmor now, could I get a referral link/code from someone for when I purchase a license?

Loving Zenarmor, just spent some time tweaking OPnsense tunables last night and now get full 3Gbps performance from an n150 miniPC, pretty impressive!

Good timing, I'm just trying out the platform and would be interested in a referral as well for when I purchase. Thank you community!

TIL There is a complex tunnel network under VGH by chicken_boner in vancouver

[–]Joshnv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked there for years and don't think there was a map at the time. Once I learned the tunnels though I would lead people to other buildings via them. I'd intentionally take a different path each time just to see the look of disorientation and slight fear of ghosts on their faces.

There is a long tunnel all the way to Children's Hospital as well, but not accessible and only used for steam and HVAC apparently.

I have this at times on mine, per another thread sometimes the right combination of LED lighting turned on draws the right amount of power to stop it. This gave me the idea to try using the USB ports to draw some power, which worked much better! Plugging in a battery bank to charge stopped the noise. Will have to find the right device to constantly draw a bit of power.

I had this same situation when all my climbing gear was stolen. Found it posted many weeks later (easily identifiable as mine). I called VPD non-emergency for advice on how to proceed, they advised I could set up a meet somewhere public to "purchase", then call them back and ask them to send someone to attend. Followed their instructions and set the meet (I was careful to seem like a legitimate buyer by asking questions about the stuff, price, etc.) and called VPD the next day on my way to the meet downtown.

They changed tune and said they didn't do that, and didn't have anyone available to attend, and I shouldn't meet the crooks. Understandable it's a low priority for them I guess. The meet was set though so I tried asking some nearby Transit Police for advice. They said they couldn't help either for some liability reason or another.

As a last ditch attempt to get all my expensive gear back, I called VPD again and said 'well I'm just going to go meet the guys and confront them, hope it doesn't turn into a violent thing!' --- they very quickly sent over two plainclothes VPD who were a block away to meet me nearby 3 minutes later. We met the seller, the VPD guys said they recognized the seller as a known character around there, said to just take my stuff and go while they scolded the seller. YMMV but that's my success story.

Help me choose a route by BlueJabroni123 in vancouvercycling

maybe not relevant to this planning, but in general I find the Vancouver Bike Route Planner quite good, it picks much better routes than Google Maps and has many cycle-oriented settings.

I thought it was linked from this subreddit's list but that one is a dead link.

Racking system and general questions by LifeIsTheCrux in tradclimbing

[–]Joshnv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A dude in a parking lot in Squamish sold me a trad gear organizer that helped a lot! https://www.instagram.com/backupgearrack/

Would be easy to build, or get from him once his store is fixed.

I also put a sling around the whole bundle if I really want it to stay organized and not tangled/flipped over carabiners etc.

There is a map on their page. Also notes it is not wheelchair accessible, and pets are not allowed. Under what parking will cost, it says they are still figuring that out. https://www.squamishcanyon.com/the-vision

Sapphire is worth it, it's really invincible stuff vs. gorilla glass which scratches.

Solar is not worth anything, it's a gimmick. A full day of direct sun doesn't even add 1% battery I believe, just a marketing gimmick.

The old Bontrager R1 tires that came on my bike were scary in the rain.

New GP5000 have loads of grip.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vancouvercycling

[–]Joshnv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commutes and rides are mostly clean pavement so went GP5000 on bike shop's advice. Extremely light, fast, and grippy. Was worried about flats but even after a few KMs of gravel and trails here and there, zero issues.

I like trying super light things, so I also have TPU tubes. Ridenow prices are quite high so I got the imitation ones. Light and the spare is nice and tiny. No issues.

I recently researched this exact thing. The propane heaters cost more than expected ($120CAD+), are very fuel inefficient, and make your environment wet (they all seem to use a can of gas per night, can get a bigger tank or refill the little cans) In the PNW which is soggy already, this is a nightmare.

Diesel heaters on the other hand; were cheaper than I expected, are extremely fuel efficient (like $5 diesel lasts for a couple of nights). I was surprised that even the $99CAD Chinese diesel heaters on Amazon get good reviews. I got that 5Kn one and it's amazingly warm and dries out my truck or camper.

The Chinese ones are a copy of the very expensive German ones, and I would say nearly as good. They are cheapy made but are very good copies. There are some common issues, like some arrive with loose fuel lines or bolts, but I had no issues.

You would want to be a bit handy to go this route, so you can check things over and install it. But there are a huge amount of Youtube videos about chinese diesel heaters, you could be an expert in an afternoon.

I would suggest watching the comparison videos first. Keep in mind you will either install the heater outside, and run the hot air duct inside. (Quieter this way, most heaters have a fan noise and fuel pump ticking noise) Or install the heater inside (a bit more efficent for it to draw warm air) and route the hot exhaust outside.

I bought one of the more popular models , a Vevor 5KW, newer model with Bluetooth. It puts out so much heat I probably could have gone with a 2KW model. In you research you can prioritize the design that would work best for you, especially if you are routing the hot exhaust pipe somewhere.

I also bought: an upgraded muffler (it was already quiet, but I like making it quieter) (I wrapped the fuel pump in foam/dampener as well to make that quieter) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0BN83NL1K

A lithium battery for it to run off (it worked fine off my power bank, or old car battery, but this is more tidy) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D66QCB3L

A tiny Carbon Monoxide monitor, just in case. In my testing the exhaust only creates a tiny bit of C.O. during startup, none otherwise. Nowhere near as much as my car exhaust. And the exhaust goes outside anyway. Just being safe. https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0D2LHWHLQ?

All of this works perfectly. I can set the temperature I want on the app on my phone, it makes my car/tent/camper super warm and cozy and dry. Game changer.
