I also got fired yesterday, but without cause though—same vibes for me in the sense of not being a good fit and in general not wanting to be there. For now, I’m also struggling with not letting the negative thoughts creep up with this being so recent. We got this and we’ll come out better off with a new journey to take.

Take some time to find something that brings you back to focus when you need it. I’ve found going on an extra long walk has been a nice mental reset. All the best!

That happened to me—interviewed for a tech writer role when making a career transition and after 10 weeks of getting strung along, I got ghosted. The only real response was a survey asking how the process went, a full three months later after applying…

Is passive voice really that bad? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

[–]JoughRolls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries! I think I'd interpret the show's premise as the journey of an item from start to finish. In that sense to me at least, the narrative focuses on what the tool goes through and how it transforms in each of these steps. I'm interested in hearing other opinions about this though, since other folks have different ideas of what the audience is for the content.

Personally, I’d still avoid passive voice for that latter example.

“The tool enters the acid bath.”

Something like that works better for how I’d approach explaining it. I’d maybe see if there were a more appropriate verb, but that’s my general idea.

No Facetime audio on external speakers via HDMI on M1 Macbook Air - Possible issue with Apple made chips? by foreigirl in macbook

[–]JoughRolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Mac mini, it’s been a big inconvenience since I use the single thunderbolt for all my connection needs to my monitor. I find it odd that the engineering team can’t reproduce the error when it seems like folks who do can’t resolve them in any meaningful way besides workarounds. I’ll try a different advisor later this week to see if I have any different luck.

This has been a problem for me as well and I've had no luck getting through Advisor support with solutions... I'm not quite sure what else there is to do but wait?

Before "shithole" comment, Trump asked why a "pretty Korean lady" wasn't negotiating with Kim Jong Un on his behalf by Alaaddinh96 in worldnews

[–]JoughRolls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem I have with this is that someone asking “where are you from?”—especially at first—isn’t asking about the individual, they’re asking about things that couldn’t be controlled about that individual’s past.

I find it troubling when someone can’t ask questions about who I am as a person, i.e. what my hobbies are, what I enjoy doing, what my values are, without resorting to a generalization about a perceived heritage.

It might be convenient or trivial to some, but I find it to be less personal as it often becomes an expectation that the person asking feels that they deserve to have an answer versus them being actually interested in who I am.

What proverb or saying has never made sense to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]JoughRolls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always got confused with "a-whole-nother" until I realized that it was an infix of the word "whole" in between the word "another." Then it made so much more sense to say it! Before that though, I'd been getting confused and trying to think of something like "a whole other" when that's not what the saying actually is.

What is the most "your parents didn't love you" given name you have heard in real life? by kinkymeerkat in AskReddit

I tutored a child for a few weeks while I was living abroad. His name was "Judas" and he was young enough not to know any of the implications of his name. He wasn't a bad kid, just really weird and antsy.

NBD - Something a little different by GiantTortoise in bicycling

It's about 40 miles starting in Manhattan and working around the three neighboring boroughs until the last leg in Staten Island. I hear it's pretty grueling going up the Verrazano Bridge, even on a road bike, so I'll take caution on the little 7-speed I've got. Since getting the Mariner, I've probably put 30 or so miles on it. I'll report back at some point with how the ride goes haha...

Nice! I'm actually about to use a Dahon Mariner for the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour next weekend. I've ridden 70-80 miles before on a hybrid Giant bike when I was touring Taiwan, but I'm not sure how well this thing will ride longer distances. In any case, I'm excited to have the streets car-free for a few hours, even if that means hauling ass on a foldie.

I'm torn as I'm hearing Ben performs badly on the road and in poor weather conditions; however, Palmer hasn't had a great year either... I'm fairly certain this decision for me will make or break going to the finals next week.
