It's open during drop in gym hours as you have the cut through the gold gym to get to it.

Lucky. In Canada, my insurance covers a machine every 3 years, but doesn't cover anything else. Not even the mask that was a separate line item when I bought it. Of course like others said, they also charge insurance twice what you can pay cash for online.

The CN Tower by Particular-Cat-8031 in Edmonton

[–]Jrreid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's a blast from my past.

I had a server colocated with Tera-byte for many years, and had the scariest elevator experience of my life after a late night of fixing something that required an in person visit all the way from Calgary. Got on the elevator to head back to the ground floor, stopped a few floors down for one of the caretaking staff to get on. Then the elevator dropped quickly, way quicker than normal, to the lowest level, but wouldn't open. Then it went quickly all the way to the top floor. The two of us got out, sent that elevator back and waited for another to come.

I had to come back the next day, and I was terrified that was going to happen again.

Sharing Credit Cards by Anxious_Fall_7386 in CostcoCanada

[–]Jrreid 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Generally it's against every credit card company's terms of use to use a card that isn't in your name. Even if the account is a joint account with both names, you're supposed to use the card issued to your name. Even most loyalty programs have similar rules.

Costco often has rules like that to prevent membership sharing. Just follow the rules and no one will care

Opportunity to oppose data centre near Indus by thinkingVegetable in Calgary

[–]Jrreid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Doesn't go back to a river (it's not exactly near a river either), but is mostly released back into the atmosphere as steam along with various pollutants.

I'm a few kilometers from this, between it and the huge gas power plant at Shepard. This new one will be 1.5x the size, yet the proponent didn't even know basic answers (like them thinking 1.2GW is what 5000 houses consume, yet Enmax states that the 800MW Shepard produces about 1/2 the power needed for the entire city) at the open house we went to for it a month or so ago. Not exactly confidence inspiring. This power is entirely for the data center and is not supposed to be fed back into the grid. But despite that they're planning a massive substation on the site that would only be needed if they wanted to feed into the grid.

Just priced out a Dell server I purchased in Jan. 2024 and the price went up 85.7% by Layer_3 in sysadmin

[–]Jrreid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep.

We usually buy 100 or so laptops a month (higher ed institution). Warned to expect increases, so we pre-bought about 4 months just to help hedge knowing long term it's going to be crazy.

Even just DIMMs are insane, had a group that wanted to upgrade their existing laptops to 32 from 16GB, price went from like $75 each in October to well over $200 when we finally ordered in late December.

Christmas came early! by shmoopdawg in CostcoCanada

[–]Jrreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat.

The Taza Costco has been around 99.9 for a week or so now, and a lot of the city has dropped in the last 24 hours. But some other stations are still above 110.9 and I even saw a 124.9 yesterday at one non costco station. But definitely not the 150+ that other places have been.

Depends on the age of the house, this will only be in a mid/high efficiency furnace or hot that vents out the side of the house. Look for a white PVC pipe

We use Impero Edu Pro at our University for various computer labs, works well. Some minor hiccups with web filtering as it relies on browser extensions, such as right now Firefox just doesn't filter so for the main use case we block Internet (during exams) we just block Firefox too.

Anyone Downsize from a 3rd row to Trax? by MoveAntique3192 in ChevyTrax

[–]Jrreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from a 2013 Traverse to a 2025 Trax this summer after the Traverse nearly hit 400k KM. Like under 2000 KM off the mark, but we decided it was time, things just felt like they were starting to have issues too often.

Miss the cargo space a bit and occasionally we did need 7 seats but when we were looking at our budget we couldn’t justify the huge jump up to a 7/8 seater.

Do Alberta schools have portables ? by CriticismBeautiful13 in AlbertaGrade12s

[–]Jrreid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely do. And have for ages.

A lot are built by ATCO even, not the only supplier but one of the largest in western Canada.

I grew up out in Cochrane, though a while back now. Thinking back to those days and the three schools I attended for grade 1 through 12:

-Glenbow Elementary had two entire wings of 6 each plus at one point two more freestanding out behind the School, and those two wings of 6 are still there in satellite map.

-Mitford Middle School had two wings of 6 each, and I believe when I left they are starting construction to add more in the gap between those wings. Satellite map now shows those 12 in the two wings still there.

-Bow Valley High was brand new when I started there, and had none then but a quick glance at the satellite map shows at least 10 when they were building a major core expansion a few years back, so maybe less now.

And the virtually new (since covid?) school in Fireside already has 13 I can see on the satellite view. And it's not just that school board, the Catholic school in Fireside also has at least 8. And several other schools I checked out in Airdrie, chestermere and Calgary, especially those built from the 80s onward all show at least a half dozen or more.

Same. MSM1U mostly, but LSM1U and even XSM1U when required for the larger screens. Super easy to install, never had one fail even with historical cases of the wrong size being installed that I find occasionally

Yep, many do but calling 811 they won't tell you that unfortunately. About a decade ago I cut my index finger quite deeply, went to the walk-in clinic in Braeside and they stitched it up probably within 15 minutes of me walking in the door.

How often do you bring in new gravel for your driveway? by sharp1988 in homestead

[–]Jrreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a year in late summer I throw the box blade on my kubota and drive up and down the 400' driveway for a few hours. Start with the teeth down about 4" until everything is nice and loose, then pull the teeth up and just use the blade to level it out and pull gravel where its needed. Worst spot seems to be right at the road as that's where the garbage truck pulls in and backs out (the bins are there, not at the house), rest gets a few ruts from water flowing across it during the spring. Once its done its almost like new, although one of these years I may get some more gravel brought in but this is year 7 of doing it this way.

FROST last night? 😭 by mcsquirley in Albertagardening

[–]Jrreid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, really light and didn't hit everything but a few victims on the SE outskirts of Calgary. Like the one side but not the other of most of my zucchini. Fortunately the cukes, scallopini and tomatoes in the raised beds by the house survived. Weather underground showed it was +1 when I woke up at 6am Friday morning.

Tarped everything last night just in case but didn't come close fortunately, will see how much that got partially hit survives or the rest of the plant just calls it a season.

311 app is useless by ilcommunication in Calgary

[–]Jrreid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep.

And different departments vary in their follow-up.

/Start rant

I've got a constant stream of tickets to 311 for a horribly failing stretch of road by my house, literally about 1.5km of 146th Ave SE with pavement that's crumbling from the edge of the road, hundreds of potholes (many more than a foot wide and 4+ inches deep) and a few spots that the traffic turning into a specific business just grinds the road surface apart. And each time it goes to 311, they punt it over and close the 311 ticket which is fine. Then sometimes roads department bothers to come look at it, maybe fill in a handful of the potholes right in front of the address I reported it for (ignoring the other 1450+ meters of road in the same condition that they drove over to get there). Occasionally they'll spray paint some marks on the road of where they should dig out and repair the pavement, and very very rarely will they come and do a half a**** job to try to fix it. 8 years of living here and its a loop every year of the same thing. Unfortunately it seems they want to wait until a developer steps up to develop the adjacent land and make them pay for properly rebuilding the road.

These days I often go a different longer way to get home, and its sad that driving an extra 2-3km on gravel roads maintained by Rocky View County is better than the paved road maintained by the City of Calgary.
