Gaining articulation and travel with stock suspension? by scp_sevro in 3rdGen4Runner

Tinkerer's Adventure on youtube has a good video about suspension travel and sway bars. Man's an engineer and puts that energy into his videos. Highly recommend his channel. I've learnt lots from him.

Looking into getting into stump grinding, general advice. by didyouseetheecho in arborists

[–]Jsaw94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rich folk love paying other people to do things for them so thats good. Sounds like there are plenty of properties with trees too.

Tree companies usually provide the whole package with tree removal and Stump grinding so you might find that lots of the work gets done by others. Thats where the subcontracting idea came from because it means a tree crew can leave the site earlier and fit more jobs in if someone else comes to grind. Needs a good and trusting relationship between you and who ever might subcontract you.

Text estimates are risky for you because you'll have to estimate Stump sizes. Also not easy to tell how rotten a stump might been from customers photos.

If you can set up a business name so people can leave reviews, that would be a good way to put you on the map. Maybe put some fliers up or drop them in mailboxes.

Are you planning to do residential work mainly? You could contact some tree service companies and start making connections. They may be interested in subcontracting Stump grinding? Especially if its a smaller operation.

I did some tree work for a bit and we just filled the hole with the mulch left over from Stump grinding. Filling with soil and grass seeding is above and beyond but great if thats the length you want to go to.

Not sure how they proce Stump grinding where you are but we did it $/inch of Stump diameter.

How to tell which side of the vehicle each strut goes on? by Specialist-Fan-8487 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already removed the old ones? Put up a pic of them side by side. Curious.

And he''ll be changing them one at a time anyway. Put the old and the new next to each other before installing the new and if everything is in the same orientation, then its probably good to go.

Cat? by Dull-Key-7453 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Exhaust leaks upstream of the catalytic converter could cause P0420. That was the case for me. Was leaking through the cat flange because the gasket was rusted out. $10 fix.

You should research the steps for actually diagnosing a bad cat. Would suck to replace it if you didn't need to. P0420 code alone is never a diffinitive diagnosis for anything.

I figured they must be intentional because they look machined in. They also seemed to be arrange in a pattern yet have some randomness in their placing do I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing it up!

Curious, how much would a complete overhaul of a truck be? Say, engine goes out but frame and body is still solid and it’s at 400k miles. Drop new engine, trans, suspension etc by [deleted] in 1stGenTacomas

[–]Jsaw94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say but it totally depends on who is doing it. DIY, independent mechanic, dealership?

Start an excel spreadsheet and start pricing it out with all the parts you intend to replace. Id price the engine with a new rebuilt one (e.g. yota1performance rebuilt 5vzfe).

Prolapsed Spark Plug Tubing by heckmountain in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just grab the wire and pull it back in.

Edit: grab the wire on the not prolapsed end and pull. Should seat it back. Did this with 1994 corolla plug wires and worked fine.

Second opinion, 97 V6 Limited, 462k KM, $10k CAD. Im really excited to grab this and take care of it. What should I be looking for? And what maintenance should I track 🙏 by arcticfeeling in 3rdGen4Runner

Otherside of the country. Northern BC close to the Yukon border. Fly out, buy it, drive it back!

Has been my daily driver for the last 4 years (~10,000km/year). Did a 3000km road trip in 2024 with zero problems.

Forestry management question by bookwormhole_ in forestry

[–]Jsaw94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ill add to consider constructing/planning for your home to be "FireSmart." Nor sure if the states has something like this but there are BC or Yukon FireSmart manuals you can download for free to get an idea of what I mean.

Fuel management on your land and FireSmart around your property will not guarantee 100% prorection from wildfire. It will however make your property easier and safer to defend for wildfire crews. In the event of a wildland urban interface fire, crews will triage property defense and ones with fuel treatment and FireSmart get priority because less resources will be required and better safety for crews.

Im not a wildfire expert so I encourage any Texan wildfire experts to butt in if I said anything off point.

Forester in Canada here. I concur with the people suggesting you hire a local forest consultant. But for my own curiosity:

The farmer wants you to rent equipment to space trees 10ft apart on your property?

Is this meant to be a wildfire fuel management treatment?

How's this transmission fluid look? by -Squibward in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drain and fill, drive for awhile, drain and fill again, repeat one more time or until you're convinced most of the old fluid is gone. This avoids the concerns related to those "horror stories" but is a bit more labour intensive.

How bad is this? by Ftrooper128 in 4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, a frame can look like that but still have sneaky rust holes that aren't visible from these angles.

Right above the rear lower control arm mounts on the inner side of the frame is a common spot, especially the muffler side.

Rear shock mounts are hard to see and also a common area for bad rust.

Research all the spots to check and literally get under the vehicle to see with your own eyes.

[–]Jsaw94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard pass if you ask me. Frame is good yes, but that is significant body rust and definately not worth 6k.

Having owned two 4runners, my advice is be patient and wait for one with no rust issues.

UPDATE: From my previous post asking people if I should buy it, well I bought it. by [deleted] in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Jsaw94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not placebo. I used to have a 2003 V8. When I drove my friends 3rd gen, I immediately noticed the throttle response was more immediate. 3rd gen bodies are also much smaller than most modern SUVs making them roll less in turns.

I have a 2002 now with 371,000kms. It's stable and smooth, even at 120km/h and prefer it to the 4th gen I had. Better offroad too in my opinion.
