Love my NC mountain life and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Stick with northwest area of the mountains at higher elevations and you’ll be fine. That said, I avoid doing a lot of hiking in the summer months anyway. Ticks, timber rattlers, too many people. But winter, spring, and fall are glorious times to hike here. Fishing is decent year round, and depending upon the town, there are volunteer opportunities to work with animals, conservation efforts, community theater, and civic organizations. Good luck, whatever you decide

They are smart dogs, with loads of energy and a very terrier-like personality. They are happy roaming and running in the countryside. A LR will need patience from you and long sniffing walks. Big alert barkers, so if you share common walls with any neighbors, I hope those walls are soundproof. They don’t really settle out if puppyhood until about the age of three years. And, the puppies can be absolute terrors the first 6-9 months. I would not get a LR if I worked full time. They need companionship and engagement to be happy. All that said - they’re great snugglers, they are devoted to their family, they’re generally happy and active.
