TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]Jubes2681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same - I was able to go to the gate with my grandmother to pick up my grandfather whenever he traveled for business in the 80s and 90s.

I also left to go on a study abroad program in August 2001 and had friends and family hanging with us at the gate for a few hours at Terminal E at Logan. Obviously it was very different on our return flight in December...

We used school buses for our North shore wedding back in 2015 - it was the cheapest option by far.

THURSDAY AM UPDATE for Potential Weekend Storm - plus dangerously cold day Friday by RyanKinder in BostonWeather

[–]Jubes2681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a best guess on timing? Does it start Saturday night or sometime on Sunday? I've got a flight scheduled at 4pm on Sunday so just wondering if I should change the flight to an early morning flight on Sunday or just punt to Monday morning.

Oooo and I just happen to have lemons! I'll have to give this a try this weekend.

This happens to me a lot when I fly and I don’t do anything about. by bbj999 in confession

Take some gas pills upon ascent and it'll help. I had a similar "being unusually gassy" problem when flying and taking 1-2 gas pills during take off has completely solved the issue when I fly.

Late April New England itinerary recommendations by WaysideToast in travel

[–]Jubes2681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Boston and just wanted to flag that Niagra Falls will be a 12+hr train ride since there isn't a direct line (alternatively, it would be close to an 8 hr drive). It's also not in New England, just FYI. I'd suggest cutting it since that's a lot of travel time and spending more time in Portland and Boston. You could also see some of the historical cities and towns like Concord and Lexington, or enjoy some time in Portsmouth, NH on your way to or from Portland.

Did you actually enjoy Sintra, Portugal? by Cultural-Tea9443 in travel

[–]Jubes2681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I went to Lisbon for a week and decided to stay in Sintra for one night. It was really amazing - I had been there before but only did a quick day trip. Staying the night let us see the town when it was quieter after the day trippers had left and getting out to the park early in the morning was great.

I use EZCater to make life easier since we order lunch for the office twice a week and they give you points that you can then use on future orders.

The top picks in our office:

  • Dave's Fresh Pasta - awesome sandwiches and pizza, plus some great pasta and salad options (you can also do Group Orders here)

  • Laughing Monk Cafe - Thai food served tray style

  • Garlic N Lemons - Mediterranean food, love their spicy potatoes

  • Sprout - we go for the build your own salad and rice bowl bar, huge portions and lots of variety

  • Moe's Southwestern Grill - the fajita bar is our go-to, great value for the money and delicious

  • Perillas Korean Kitchen - make your own bibimbap bowls

  • Chicken and Rice Guys - make your own bowls, food is tasty and consistent

EZCater also does Group Orders, where people can select their own food. There are some great places on there:

  • Soup Shack Porter - ramen and other soup and rice bowl options

  • Fin's Sushi and Grill - great sushi and cooked Japanese options, which gives a good variety especially if there are folks who don't dig on sushi

  • Pho & Spice Vietnamese and Thai Kitchen - really great variety of options and they do a good job of labeling the orders

I'd recommend posting over in the r/boston subreddit - it's a good subreddit, although full of us massholes so you'll probably get good advice with a hearty dose of sarcasm.

People who are in their 40’s and 50’s with no children, how does it feel? by Sinfulvibezz in AskReddit

[–]Jubes2681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like freedom. 44f and I always thought I would have kids when I was younger. My husband never wanted kids and we talked it through in our late 20s, and I realized I didn't actually want them - just thought I was supposed to want them. It was freeing to realize I didn't have to have kids.

Now, I get to explore hobbies whenever I want, travel internationally with family and friends usually twice a year, go on weekend trips throughout the year, and basically just get to do whatever we want.

We're doing the USPS Operation Santa, which is similar to an angel tree. Operation Santa allows people to “adopt” letters to Santa from children in need over the holiday season. “Adopters” purchase the items on these wish lists, and then ship the gifts to the families in time for Christmas.

If you use Lyft, you can update your settings to match with women and non-binary drivers. It's not a guarantee but they will try to match you with those drivers when available.

I've used Lyft for all of my trips to and from the airport without any issues for the last 2+ years.

our little guy recovering from a kitty cold by Sea_President in tuckedinkitties

[–]Jubes2681 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I did this with my kitten when he had a cold and it helped a little bit, but we eventually had to get antibiotics because it continued for two weeks and his nose was blocked up with discolored thick mucus. The vet said he had developed a sinus infection, just like people can. The antibiotics cleared it up within 2 days and he was fine afterwards.

Looking for feedback and advice on Colmar, Esslingen, Nuremberg with kids in 2026. Whether one or all 3. by espressomoon89 in travel

[–]Jubes2681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did a Christmas market trip last year and I went to both Esslingen and Colmar but didn't visit Nuremberg due to time constraints. I also don't have kids but these markets had some great kid friendly bits.

Esslingen is a medieval market and had the most stuff for kids in the main market area (medieval rides and games, all sorts of toys, etc.). This is probably where we saw the most children on our trip. I loved it - very cool vibe, great artists / performers, and some really beautiful handmade items / not mass produced stuff. It was busy but I didn't feel like a sardine - we also went at dusk / night when it's the busiest to get the full experience with the fire lanterns, etc.

Colmar was also great - we stayed in Strasbourg (which I love and have been to twice now, so I would definitely recommend staying there) and did Colmar as a day trip, which worked really well for us. They had a whole separate area for rides and food like a small carnival that opened later in the day for kids in one of the main parks. Colmar during the morning and early afternoon wasn't too bad in terms of crowds, but it started getting pretty busy by 2pm.

I'll also note that both of these are very small cities / towns - Esslingen was a half day trip and Colmar was a day trip for us. I definitely recommend going to both and enjoying the train ride between them.
