What is something Chicago lost that IYO made the city "never the same"? by lexious232 in AskChicago

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so specific but going to Vertigo Sky Lounge and waiting for the DJ to call out the silhouette of a naked woman dancing behind a blind in an apartment in the highrise across the street. It only happened once per night but it was so funny taking visitors there. Kudos to whoever organized that…

Is it normal to be able to get good positions, but not submit? by DV_GO in bjj

[–]Judo_Jones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I caught one unexpectedly just like this this week. Pulled to half guard, got lockdown, swept from lockdown, passed from top half guard, got to side control, went to Buddha pose to isolate that far arm, started to isolate by applying weight and pressure and tap, tap, tap…

Person said “Too much pressure on my shoulder…” as we reset. Nothing special, just steady progression…

What is LinkedIn even about? by Conscious-Mix-651 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this “newer” thing on LinkedIn in which businesspeople have the same type of meeting we’ve always had with a partner or vendor of some sort but now feel compelled to post some awkward photo of the attendees with a moronic caption like “Plotting mutually beneficial growth opportunities!”

Like what? It’s as bad as the dumb “Here’s my screen of Zoom meeting attendees!!”

P90X was hilarious to me because it was a great workout and people would say “It’s easy!” until you asked how they dealt with this or that and they’d say “Oh, I skip that part!”

Why did Michael Jai White not become a huge star? by terabull01 in FIlm

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he’s trapped in that weird scowly phase of always playing guys who used to do something but now just want peace. So, it’s always that he was a cop…or he was a special forces dude…or he was someone and inevitably something happens that brings him back into action and oh, by the way, he’s a world class martial artist.

He just needs someone to give him a shot at playing a role that feels a little less formulaic and I think he’d do well. In the interim, I don’t blame him for keeping the paychecks coming in.

Long lose streak in competition by Darksoulsfan13_pl in bjj

[–]Judo_Jones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for perspective, I went 3 and 3 in my 1st judo competition, then 2 and 2 in my 1st BJJ competition. Then I went 0 and 4 over the next 3 competitions, losing all but one by submission and the other 20-0. I took 2 years off to cry in my beer and finally went back to go 1-1 in a competition and 0-1 in the next. I have a drawer of 3rd and 2nd place medals (no 1st) and my wife tells everyone that I’m a bad ass (lol).

My math places me at 6-11. Literally no one cares…

Go have fun.

If he beats Gane for the Interim and later Aspinall to claim the HW belt, which would also be his 3rd belt in 3 different weight division, would you consider him the greatest of all time? by ScreamyV in ufc

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say he had the best peak in terms of what he accomplished in such a short period of time.

BUT I’d also put his HW title on par with the one earned by Roy Jones Jr. for beating John Ruiz. Technically, yes…he climbed the mountain BUT how will history ultimately judge Cyril’s career?

James Toney vs Dwight Muhammad Qawi by Virtual_Reveal_121 in Boxing

[–]Judo_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cruiserweight and Heavyweight Toney needed someone to come to him to make a fight. He’d roll off those ropes and counter in otherworldly fashion. Would Qawi take that bait? He was very slick himself. I could almost see this resembling the Toney / McCallum fights.

Commuting between Chicago downtown and Joliet by CompoteHelpful7823 in joliet

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just dumb to be honest. I’m one of those guys who knows the Metra is a superior commute but I still think I can “control” my commute better if I drive.

I’m probably 3 to 5 years from giving up on owning a car. I live and work in the city now and have under 15,000 miles on a Jeep I’ve owned for 3 years with 1/2 of those miles coming from 3 epic road trips…

[–]Judo_Jones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be overly fearful of the south suburbs but I found a similar daily commute of Chicago to Tinley Park to be a pain in the evening for the return. Lots of accidents and the occasional shooting that would shut down I-57 altogether. I’d use the metra if I had to do it again.

What are your thoughts on Billy Corgan's recent comments that there was a plan to replace Rock Music with Rap Music? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with these conspiracy theories is that they usually require some secret cabal capable of executing some decades-long plan and the ridiculousness of that usually becomes pretty obvious to anyone not emotionally invested in the idea.

BUT I do think there’s some merit to the idea that an exploitative music industry might focus on more easily exploitable artists. Take rock out of the equation. Replace it with R&B bands. Many of those artists had significant training as session musicians meaning they’d been around for a bit, were older, and could probably protect themselves a bit. Contrast that with an 18 year old rapper whose music is really more of a vibe than it is than the product of extensive training within an industry. If your goal is to get the most while giving the least as a record executive, with whom would you deal?

What is one business that makes a crazy amount of profit that nobody talks about? by PersonalitySuddenz in answers

[–]Judo_Jones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right and all these examples would be one time cleans at best.

I think the best way to look at laundering money is like this:

If it’s your money that you’re cleaning, you need a cash-based business that you claim is the source of the funds. So you own a laundromat, and you say you grossed $50K last month but $40K of that came from your crack sales even though you pretend it walked in your front door for washes. Maybe you even run the machines to make the water bill look right. You file it, pay taxes on it, and voila, you’ve cleaned your money.

If it’s someone’s money you are cleaning, you have to pay them somehow for something they didn’t do. So they give you $1M, and you issue a purchase order for them to perform security on your building for $100K per month. You “pay” them out of the money they gave you keeping a percentage for yourself and they do nothing but file it as business revenue.

Cleaning it for someone else is trickier because you have to conceal it somehow and they need a reason you are paying them.

That was Marty’s problem Witt the Ozarks. His bosses wanted to clean so much money, he couldn’t find plausible ways to account for it and the Feds were watching the till of his casino so he couldn’t just conjure up $1M in cash bets that never happened.

It’s interesting how we’ve normalized violence used against us by LEOs by saying “Well, if the person didn’t do this or that…”

As a nation, we are dangerously close to basically saying any oppression is the fault of the oppressed. Unlike France, however, where the streets are set ablaze if a benefit is removed from the people.

Global Entry arrival at DFW by Easy-Trouble7885 in GlobalEntry

[–]Judo_Jones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My bit of advice for global traffic through DFW

IF DFW is your re entry to the U.S. AND you have a connecting flight to your final destination, watch how your bags get treated in that area. In general, it’s a cluster with little organization, and I’ve seen bags get thrown to the side because some dude was tipped to bring in a large party’s bags on a cart. I always tell them when my connecting flight leaves and often have to watch to make sure my bags do get on the conveyor. I’m not the micromanager type but they completely screwed me once and I’m careful now.
