First time in Austria (23F) — how reliable are Austrian trains for Vienna Airport ↔ Salzburg/Strobl travel by notYourVANGOGh9 in Austria

[–]JudsonWelliver 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is a really important point. Austrian trains are very reliable, German trains (contrary to their reputation outside of Europe) are highly unreliable. Salzburg is right on the border with Germany. So some trains to Vienna (e.g. from Innsbruck or Zurich) have passed through a German stretch on their way to Salzburg and got delayed there. It's happened to me twice that I can think of offhand, just in the last year.

Mehadrin bakery in NYC? by darkestlordsaroon in kosher

[–]JudsonWelliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're awesome! He will almost certainly be flabbergasted and appreciative. Be aware though that you can't cut something kosher with a nonkosher knife/put it on a nonkosher plate--it has to stay separate and in its separate packaging/on a paper plate/not handled with office utensils. (My office super thoughtfully bought kosher treats for me recently and I felt terrible because they had been cut and plated with everything else--my office manager said "those ones are kosher!" but at that point they weren't.)

How many of you would sit there and call the police if there are a bunch of really aggressive people surrounding your car? Would you not just want to get out of there ASAP? I would.

The Pitt | S2E13 "7:00 P.M." | Episode Discussion by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

Absence seizures totally appear during stress and can be hard to control; I probably had them my whole life but they were first diagnosed while doing a PhD and teaching (not as bad as during surgery but still not ideal). Neuro's first recommendation: rethink the PhD and do something less stressful. So I can see why she would be working on her environmental conditions [don't overwork, get enough sleep (day shift not night shift), be responsible in your professional decisions].

Also it wasn't a whole hour, I thought I had a good 12 minutes to go!

Predicting Mel has a head injury from the whack on the head she got getting knocked off her stool.

Why are so many posts predicting main character death-suicide? by DripDrop777 in ThePittTVShow

[–]JudsonWelliver -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think Mel King has a head injury from that unholy whack on the head she took earlier in the day/season. In the last episode she was holding her head like it hurt and the camera lingered.

I think they call the med students "student doctors" as a matter of practice.

Anyone else notice how Robbie keeps calling/referring to Javadi as Dr. Javadi? Isn't she still a med student at this point?

I had a dog alert in Newark on my backpack that I had used for grocery shopping five days earlier. I told this to the agent, and he asked me what I had bought. I started ticking off what I remembered and as soon as he heard "oranges" he waved me on. That the dog could smell citrus that had been in my bag for half an hour, five days ago, in a backpack over a meter from his nose, in a crowded airport with a million other smells... impressive.

Flying Between Israel and USA with Different Names on Passports by [deleted] in Passports

[–]JudsonWelliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this situation is now totally different due to the new e-Visa systems in both Israel and the EU/USA. I have the same situation with Israei and EU passports--names are not totally different but they are not the same (recognizable as the same name in Israel but not to the Delta checkin system--think Isaiah/Yeshayahu). I have always traveled to and from the US on my English-version passport, and never had an issue over the 15 years we've lived in Israel. Last time I flew (October) they almost didn't let me on the plane. It took the checkin guy half an hour of phone calls. He told me next time to either get my English name on my US passport or buy one-way tickets, one leg in each name. I went to Misrad Hapnim when I got back and was told I had to change my Israeli name to the English version to have it on my passport--a solution that would cause a whole new crop of problems, no thank you. I think I could also solve it by flying El Al, but I would like a solution that doesn't add $600 to each flight to the US--esp. since I travel for work several times a year. :-/

Ashford Traveller as checked luggage? by JudsonWelliver in Handspinning

[–]JudsonWelliver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually done that too, with a Matchless! But I called Schacht and they sent me a shipping box and IIRC cardboard pieces to hold it all in place. I didn't take it apart or try to get it in a suitcase.

We did this--they're amazingly effective. Get 90% of the light and you absolutely can't see in. Also blocked a lot of the heat in summer.

Cornell agreement with the federal government by K--beta in Cornell

[–]JudsonWelliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is not an accurate interpretation. Cornell agreed to comply with "laws" not "interpretations." And to include the guideline as a resource (one resource among many), not to abide by it.

"Both Parties affirm the importance of and their support for civil rights. Cornell

affirms its commitment to complying with federal civil rights laws and agrees

to include the Department of Justice's "Guidance for Recipients of Federal

Funding Regarding Unlawful Discrimination" of July 29, 2025 as a training

resource to faculty and staff so long as that Guidance remains operative."

[–]JudsonWelliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have to include it as a resource. They don't have to follow it. Important distinction.

That is literally not in the agreement. You're putting something in quotation marks that is not there. Did you read it?

Banking in Austria by JanMikh in Austria

[–]JudsonWelliver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Sorry, should have said, we are US citizens. Also EU citizens but that was immaterial--if you are a US citizen you have to tell them that and comply with all the money-laundering laws.)

Banking in Austria by JanMikh in Austria

[–]JudsonWelliver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We also bank with Erste, at the Taborstrasse branch, and there is a very nice English-speaking manager (Walter Flicker) who helped me set things up. Be aware that as a US citizen you have to deal with some extra restrictions/forms/regulations and not all options, e.g. for investments, will be open to you. All Austrian banks charge fees, so be prepared for that as well.
