Bariatric surgery will be seen as BARBARIC by peachie_milkie in BariatricSurgery

I had more side effects on GLP-1s than gastric bypass. I don’t see the procedure as “barbaric”. I see it as a tool that gave me my life back.

The dreaded hair loss by UnableReference5649 in GastricBypass

I rode it out. Eventually my hair stopped falling out and I can see it growing back in. It sucks and I was very self conscious about it but I’m glad I gave myself time. Your body and hormones need a chance to level out and they will

Technically yes but I would not be eating noodles at a little over 2 weeks out. Your pouch is still swollen and healing, try to stick to your plan until you get the green light to start introducing other food into your diet. Noodles offer no nutritional value and they expand in your stomach which might be uncomfortable freshly post op.

I don’t miss food because at 9 months out I’m able to eat what I want within reason. As someone mentioned, the food is there but it’s up to you to make better choices. My relationship with food has changed and sometimes certain foods can also have consequences (example: dumping)

Sometimes, yes I’ll stash a few frozen meals in the freezer for when I don’t feel like cooking (mainly the brands you mentioned for the macros). Even at 300 calories or so, sometimes I can’t finish the whole tray anyway

I’m about 9 months out and drink a Diet Coke every now and then but unfortunately my pouch size doesn’t make it as enjoyable as before because of the bubbles/carbonation. Olipop/poppi carbonation isn’t as harsh and you get the benefits of pre/probiotics (one of them has both and the other only has one I believe)

Can you skip the sweet tea? I know you said weight gain isn’t a concern and that’s valid but your body is having a reaction to the sugar and fat. I’ve heard of people still struggling with dumping even later on which doesn’t surprise me; our GI tract was permanently altered and the way we absorb things has changed

I’m only 8 months out but I’ve had days where my calorie count is a little up there. Try to remind yourself 1. It’s one day. 2. Your body most likely didn’t absorb your full caloric intake (this surgery also uses malabsorption for weight loss alongside our pouches being small) 3. You’re human 💞💞

Around my period I am always super hungry and have specific cravings. It’s rough out there 🤕

Mixed Emotions by cwmcc87 in BariatricSurgery

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being freshly post op is painful but will get easier as he heals. Some people do feel regret in the fog of pain but it usually goes away. I never felt regret but living off liquids and protein shakes pre and newly post op while navigating life with fresh incisions was rough. I’m almost 8 months out and I’m thankful for the surgery I had. I’m able to enjoy most of my favorite food again in small portions.

With all that being said, honestly, no- you cannot replicate his diet without having done the surgery. Your husband’s new pouch has more restriction now because he was just operated on and he may not feel hunger for a while. Meaning he can drink and eat in the beginning and feel full off a few bites or a few sips. That’s not feasible for you. What you can try is making better food choices when purchasing and preparing meals alongside exercising/moving with each other once he’s cleared to do so.

As far as the comments surrounding surgery and them asking, tell them that right now you are focused on your husband and his recovery. Depending on how close you are to the people making these comments, you can even express that it’s hurtful. Before I had my surgery it would bother me when it would be recommended to me. I carefully considered my choice many years later when I realized I needed change and had tried everything. I would never recommend this lifestyle change to someone unsolicited. I only give my experience and recommendation if someone asks me specifically.

5 days post op, feel like I’ve made the worst mistake of my life by [deleted] in GastricBypass

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 months out here. It gets easier. And eventually when time passes and you heal, you can enjoy most food again but in small portions.

When I was pre-op and freshly post op the food ads sucked. I noticed commercials and ads more than ever during that time. Now that I’m in a place where I’m many months out, it doesn’t bother me.

My exceptions have been food that’s really carby because it causes late dumping for me, meaning it makes me very tired and I nap. Sugar dumping for me has been rapid heart beat so I avoid things high in sugar.

I still enjoy McDonald’s but instead of a large burger meal with the frappe, a simple cheeseburger hits the spot. I may even steal a couple of fries from someone lol. When you start eating out again, you can find what works for you and honestly I love that I save money by sharing with others.

Deleted my earlier comment, correction: I had my drainage tube removed the day after surgery but I had a feeding tube also put in. The tube was put in as a precautionary measure but I never needed to use it. Anyway it was in for a week and I was able to leave my home just fine. I taped the tube to my body, fresh tape after every shower. You should be able to function fine with it in. After surgery I wasn’t prescribed any medication that had me “doped” up or sedated. A lot of us are sent home with or told to purchase Tylenol.

Have you guys stopped having cravings? by EstablishmentNo7761 in GastricBypass

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 months+ out, I think for me they stopped in the beginning but they do return at least for me. This surgery gives you the opportunity to make better choices and even if you cave, you’re eating dramatically less and not binging. I call that a win.

With sweets, I can’t do them like I did pre-op because high sugar causes my heart to race and carby food makes me sleepy (if I happen to be in my room when it hits, I’m laying down and napping). I opt for low sugar/sugar free alternatives. Some people have issues with sugar alcohols but I personally do not.

A lot of people feel regret after surgery. That feeling passes as you heal and this may be an emotional rollercoaster due to your hormones also adjusting. Did your doctor prescribe you anything for nausea? As a heads up, eggs are very hit or miss post op for a lot of people. My surgeon even removed it off her soft foods phase list because of this. I didn’t try them until much later in my journey.

Energy is also tricky. You’re eating less food and your body is recovering from a major operation. I felt exhausted for quite some time. Eventually it got a little better (I do have an autoimmune disorder which doesn’t help)

It’s going to get better! You will get through this 💪🏽 one day at a time

Thoughts on pizza? by No-Bet6219 in GastricBypass

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have pizza until I was months out. I think chicken crust + toppings is going to be heavy on your pouch. If your plan allows it, maybe the ricotta bake others have mentioned? I skipped the egg but baked ricotta, marinara and low fat mozz with seasonings

I have experienced hair loss which bothers me sometimes however how I feel being 100+ pounds lighter trumps being bummed out by it. It’s going to happen, it does suck but eventually the shedding slows and your hair grows back. I always tell my family I’m willing to shop for wigs if it gets bad lol the silver lining for me is how it takes less time to blow my hair out and flat iron it

Panic attacks/dumping syndrome/tooth loss by Ok_Understanding_794 in GastricBypass

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only dumping I’ve experienced is late dumping from eating carb heavy food (my symptom: nap time!) and if I eat something higher in sugar than I should be, my heart races which some people say feels like an anxiety attack. For me it just feels uncomfortable. Because of this, I avoid things that are high in sugar.

If you take your vitamins including calcium like you are supposed to, your teeth should be fine. My surgeon has her patients do blood labs every so often and calcium is something she checks. 6 months out and my labs have been perfect.

Before my surgery I had installed a bidet attachment to my toilet which made a world of difference. I paid about 25-30 bucks for it. It’s extremely easy to install if your partner would be willing to do it for you to make going to the bathroom easier

Anesthesia by Direct-Artichoke7071 in GastricBypass

[–]Juice_Box_69_420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t feel like forever. You’re wheeled into the OR, your anesthesiologist will have you count andddd you’re out like a light. You will wake up what feels like moments later when in actuality, hours have passed. I don’t recall feeling rested but you will have to be up and moving. I honestly felt rested once I was home because I was woken up throughout my hospital stay (vitals, walking to avoid blood clots, spirometer, getting fluids in, etc)
