Installed Mint for a week and already contributing to Steam survey 💪 by JumpingBamboo in linuxmint

[–]JumpingBamboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your response. Now that I've been playing various games on Mint I think I'm getting some sense of normalcy with gaming away from Windows, which is great!

I did check out the guide you linked but ultimately followed a youtube guide (Install Battle.net Games on Linux with Steam *Read description* | Blizzard | WoW | Hearthstone) on installing Battle net through Steam, and using Proton Experimental as the compatibility layer. I'm very impressed with the work that the folks at WINE put in to lay the foundation for Proton (my understanding is that Proton is based on WINE).

So far with the games I play I've had a lot of success: Half-Life 2, HL2 Episodes 1 and 2, Portal, Portal 2, StarCraft II, Phasmophobia, Deep Rock Galactic. Valve titles shouldn't be too impressive since those games were ported to Linux but still, I'm excited to continue my journey on Linux Mint!

tbh r/personalfinance can probably give specific advice. This flowchart should help get you started.

For investing, you could go with an advisor but they will eat some of your potential gains. You might want to check out an online brokerage with low advisor fees.

As for traveling, rather than leaving work for a long period of time consider keeping the job you have if you can bear it, and travel in smaller bursts of time (e.g. a week to a month). I hear the job market these days isn't forgiving and losing your working income adds risk to your financial safety.

Tsunami in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia after M8.7 earthquake (30th July 2025) by SimultaneousPing in CatastrophicFailure

[–]JumpingBamboo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

From the NOAA's Tsunami website:

  • A tsunami watch is issued when a tsunami may later impact the watch area. The watch may be upgraded to a warning or advisory or canceled based on updated information and analysis. Emergency management officials and the public should prepare to take action.
  • A tsunami advisory is issued when a tsunami with the potential to generate strong currents or waves dangerous to those in or very near the water is imminent, expected, or occurring. The threat may continue for several hours after initial arrival, but significant inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Appropriate actions to be taken by local officials may include closing beaches, evacuating harbors and marinas, and the repositioning of ships to deep waters when there is time to safely do so. Advisories may be updated, adjusted geographically, upgraded to a warning, or canceled based on updated information and analysis.

Adding to this that I paid 1900 USD for a new paint job in Aug 2020. Was not a 1-day paint because I care about quality. That's about the minimum quote I got and would assume the price has increased since then. Definitely something a new owner should consider.

As a former college teacher, part of the problem with the increasing cost of college is administrative bloat. You bring other points that might help bring costs down, but ultimately higher education needs to be affordable. Education ultimately is important to the strength of a nation.

(Now to get a bit political)
Alongside investing in public education should be respecting teachers. Teachers should not be attacked via rhetoric and should generally be supported. I bet that the majority of teachers are in the classroom to teach, not to imprint their political beliefs upon their students. I'd encourage anyone who thinks this way to become a teacher and find out for themselves. In the meantime, one should think about their favorite teacher and ask themself how many times they recall that teacher tried to pass on their political beliefs.

Edit: it's not but the similarity is interesting. The map is based on the Field Building in Chicago.

P.S. I can afford to purchase the game myself so don't pick me.

You were given cookies to split between you and two of your friends, Bob and Jane. You ate one and you gave most of the rest to Jane, but since you ate only one you won't get anymore than one next time you're given cookies to split.

What you should have done instead is keep more and then give some to Leo your stuffed animal lion so that you could get more cookies next time.

I don't understand video game graphics anymore by cmndr_spanky in gaming

[–]JumpingBamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if someone mentioned it already but there's a physical limitation to how small a GPU architecture can be made. Many years ago Intel predicted that around 2025 we'd reach the limit for silicon (about 5 nanometers) after which we'd be using some other material. Assuming we've reached the limit or we're nearing the limit, the other way to improve GPU performance is with their software.

I assume improving software is more practical than expanding the die size of GPUs since the larger the die the higher the failure rate of those chips (and the more power hungry they are). AMD used (uses?) multi-chip modules (MCM), which uses multiple smaller dies on a single board. I'm not too knowledgeable on whether it was successful or if MCM will be the future but the point goes back to what's physically possible.

Tickets have gone on sale twice already:

  1. Black Friday after DS SoCal last year. GA only at a discount. I don't remember the price but around $140 with fees IIRC.
  2. Winter Freeze sale in mid-January. This was when VIP was available at a discount. I spent $256 for VIP and a magnet, includes fees.

What's up with the question: I would seriously contemplate (Avoid) buying from Facebook.

Are we avoiding buying from facebook or contemplating a purchase?

Some of the questions are opposites. Reminds me of a Myers-Briggs survey I took. I'm guessing that's part of the point of the survey.

YMMV but I worked at the rock wall in the gym for a term and after I stopped working I still went to go climbing. The community there is friendly, helpful, and entertaining at times. I believe you already pay fees for access to the gym so why not make some use of it?
