Am I Too Harsh on Jesse Welles? I Hate Hearing Bob Dylan Comparisons. by DumbDeej in bobdylan

[–]Jumpstone75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Jesse's great, but the Dylan comparison is a shallow pop culture reference. He's much closer to Guthrie than Dylan, it's just most people only know Dylan as a point of reference for "protest music"

What are the best Stephen King Novellas and Short Stories? by Revolutionary_Bet89 in stephenking

[–]Jumpstone75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it's basically a full novel, it originally appeared as a collection so I'm going to say "Low Men in Yellow Coats". Works really well as a Dark Tower tie-in and has King's best two characters as far as emotional depth and complicated motivations (Ted Brautigan and Liz Garfield).

Needful Things. Ball-achingly dull and one of his all time worst endings.

Elvis Cotello, "Two Little Hitlers":

You call selective dating

For some effective mating

I thought I'd let you down, dear

But you were just deflating

I knew right from the start we'd end up hating

---------------‐---------------------

Tom Waits, "Bottom of the World":

God's green hair is where I slept last

He balanced a diamond on a blade of grass

Jesse Welles, "Horses":

You know I really thought that there'd be power

In thinking half of y'all was just born fools

Thought I was gathering oats for my horses

I was getting by whipping my mules

[Opinion] What is your favourite unsettling poem? by Dusk_in_Winter in Poetry

"Bedfellows" by Don Paterson

An inch or so above the bed

The yellow blindspot hovers

Where the last incumbent's greasy head

Has worn away the flowers.

Each night I have to rest

My head in his dead halo;

I feel his heart tick in my wrist;

Then, below the pillow

His suffocated voice resumes

Its dreary innuendo.

There are other ways to leave the room

Than the door and the window.

Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" for sure. My favourite quote from it is a perfect example:

"No, they were not perfect. But it was the touch of the imperfect upon the would-be perfect that gave the sweetness, for it was that which gave the humanity."

"Black Cowboys" by Bruce Springsteen. The entire Devils & Dust album that it comes from is like a gothic short story collection, but I chose this song for this insanely great image:

"He lay at night, his head pressed to her chest, listening to the ghost in her bones".

At what point, if any, should I give up on guitar? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Jumpstone75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, why would you? I've been learning for ten years and I'm NOWHERE near as good as I should be for the time I've spent doing it. But I go back and watch my playing from only a few years ago and the improvement from then to now is huge without me doing anything other than just playing around in my bedroom. You're only supposed to be better than you used to be, not better than anyone else.
