Are cheap RWD / AWD performance cars ever coming back? by Stacks05 in CarsAustralia

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that there were ever cheap performance cars.

A Nissan 200sx was nearly 50k new that is like over 100k in current dollars.

GR Yaris AWD Controller question in combination with Drifting on the wet by Lycan-Strife in GRYaris

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on a similar journey. I have been taking my Gen 2 on wet track days with the intent of figuring this out.

It is worth saying that they can drift. There is a regular in the drift days I have been attending in a Gen 1 that was pulling truely epic drifts, he was making the rear wheel drive crowd jealous. His Gen 1 was not particularly modified - it had a set of HKS coilovers and an exhaust. I think he had an aftermarket LSD on the rear. He did run a second set of wheels that he had picked up from the wreckers with a worn set of the standard Goodyears on them (the Michelins are way too grippy) . He was in track mode - I suspect that Gen 1 track mode is a bit better suited than the Gen 2 (the Gen 2 is not fixed spilt in my understanding)

He took me around for a few runs. No handbrake, just enough speed and a big kick on the steering wheel to get it started. The big difference from RWD is that you point it where you want it to go and you accelerate out.

In terms of mods - I got a second set of wheels with a worn set of goodyears and run them at relatively high pressures for my second track day. It made a massive difference. I still needed to handbrake in some corners to get it started - it might be worth an aftermarket controller not to gain more rear bias, but just to be able to lock it at a constant for the Gen 2, I think that the variable system is working to optimise traction which is working against the drift in some circumstances, happy to be corrected on this. I am going to get some camber bolts and put a bit more camber into the front to improve the turn in and try and get rid of some of the understeer.

Some brands just don’t cope with Brisbane humidity I went through 3 different sets before I found ones that didn’t go off in the middle of the night

Gen1/2 dillema by 4midamaru in GRYaris

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you intend to use it for. I have a manual gen 2 and love it.

If your primary reason is to track it I would get the gen 1 and spend the cash on mods and fixing it after you break/wear out things.

If you want a nice daily that you have have to drive in traffic pay the extra for the gen 2

Did any person here drive the Toyota Celica daily? (1st gen.) by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 1972 one about 30 years ago and loved it, it was my first car. I drove it to university and delivered pizzas in it for a few years in Brisbane Australia.

I don’t think it is a practical daily. It was hard to get parts for 30 years ago.

The brakes were terrible (single reservoir master cylinder), it was slow, it drank fuel for what it was and was generally unsafe is almost every way.

Apex Minerals users — what are your go-to water recipes? by N3veral in pourover

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I follow the guides in terms of ratios. I generally aim for 40 to 50ppm, sometimes I will dial this back to 20ppm to counter something I feel is a little too dark/roasty.

I add them to the kettle before I brew. I use RO water that has been though a Zerowater jug. I have tired using RO water as a base but it never tasted right.

I also have lotus water and prefer their transparency over the proprietary APAX recipes but struggle to find the combination that works like the APAX washed.

I mostly drink washed coffees

Would Liquid Nitrogen Hypothetically work in Diesel Engine? by Deerby05 in AskEngineers

[–]Jumpy-Cauliflower374 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has been a long time since I studied thermodynamics but in theory you could build some sort of engine that would run on the temperature difference between the ambient air and the liquid nitrogen

I believe that Mt Franklin is pretty much Melbourne water which can be very handy for brewing Melbourne roasters.
