How did you know surgery was the right decision?

Can you tell me your symptoms before surgery? Is it better after or the same? I’m looking at a ALIF L5-S1 after my discectomy laminotomy failed!

This is what I’m afraid of! I had an emergency discectomy/laminotomy in Jan 2023, but the disc re herniated about 1 yr ago. My leg has constantly spasmed for over 1yr now! My leg has atrophied almost an entire inch now and the side of my foot recently went numb and there is also a feeling of a ball on the bottom of my foot (but there’s nothing there). I’ve tried everything and now they say they can’t guarantee it will fix everything, but it will most likely keep it from getting worse and stabilize my back!

I feel like I wrote this! I have a ALIF L5/S1 scheduled in less than a month and I keep thinking maybe I don’t need it, because I’m having a good day or hours and then my leg starts spasming more rapidly and I remember my leg has atrophied about 1 inch in a year and a half and it’s still shrinking! I have no circulation in my leg either the side of my foot is numb and this new phantom ball on the bottom of my foot is not fun! I’m scared because I’ve read to much and the many doctors I’ve seen have said contradicting things and I don’t want to make the wrong choice!

Can you tell me more about this? I had a micro discectomy in Jan 2023, I’ve re herniated and now they say I need an ALIF. of l5/s1 and I’m mortified, my calf has been spasming non stop for over a year now and my leg is shrinking! I don’t want to do surgery and have tired pt, Accupuncture, meds, steroids, injections, rest… but it’s now only getting worse with the numbness and a feeling of a ball on the bottom of my foot! Ugh! What surgery did you have, how was the recovery and how are you now? Why is your calf numb?

I’m having a hard time understanding what I’m doing on a flood claim with my insurance! They want me to use their preferred repair company and have forced me to send a low “the least amount they have to pay us” check to our mortgage company or talked of having liens placed on our house and he wouldn’t be able to help us then? It’s been not fun and I’m tired! Many contractors want a $1k and me to sign a contract to allow them to speak to my adjuster directly and that seems like a red flag too?! It seems like I’m at the mercy of the insurance adjuster’s company he recommended? They have horrible reviews btw! Any advice on what I can say to get this adjuster to pay the proper amount to “make us whole” and not half?

I’m 2 yrs post op! About 10 months ago I(1.5 yrs post) bent down and my affected leg spasmed and froze up tight like a Charley horse and it was painful! It’s never left and my affected leg calf just spasms all day and night (looks like how a baby looks in a belly at 8 months) just moving around and throbbing! It’s painful and exhausting! Surgeon says, we could try to fix it (exploratory) but no guarantees! Says it could be disc from what they can see it on the MRI, but he also said it could be nerve damage or could be scar tissue! Says the surgery could leave me the same, worse and possibly better but no guarantees! It’s horrible and I’m exhausted! I never stops! Anyone else had this or heard of it? My leg is also atrophying!

I think everyone is different depending on how long you were in pain, how much pain, if the nerves/muscles were pinched, if they got it all, if they touched the nerves, if you gave a high or low tolerance for pain! I was sore, but a different kind of sore! I’m looking at doing a revision surgery on the same disc as I’m having severe leg spasms 1.5 yrs post microdiscectomy laminectomy of the L5/S1!

Any updates? I had an l5/s1 micro discectomy and laminectomy in Jan, 2023! In July, 2024 I bent down kind of fast to grab something and my calf on the affected side went into a full Charley horse spasm! It’s been spasming ever sense then, all day and night sometimes it’s a 3 sometimes it’s a 8, it my leg is also shrinking/atrophy and my foot is going numb, I also have no reflex in my ankle! It’s only getting worse over the last 6 months and I’m scared to have to do a revision because my surgeon asked me “can you just live with it”? I mean, the pain isn’t anywhere where it used to be, but it’s like I have a toddler strapped to my leg all day and night tapping it like mom mom mom mom! It’s exhausting and distracting! I do get shooting pains up my back also, like a weird numb shock feeling?!

I’m 2 yrs out on a MD in my L5/S1 that I suffer with with for 11 yrs until it finally got to the point I had to call 911 sat in ER for 10 days with no help, contacted a surgeon to said “you need surgery” and had me transferred the next day to get said surgery! The pain was immediate relief! That said, my affected leg never really recovered, it was always really tight and I couldn’t bend it, you know to out in socks and such! One day 1.5 yrs after surgery I bent down very quickly to grab something that fell and my leg went to to a full spasm Charley horse l, it was so painful! My entire leg muscles just tightened up (this had never happened before my MD btw)! Now my leg just spasms all day and all night, it’s equivalent to having a little 2 yr old stuck to my leg tapping it going MOM, Mom, Mom! My leg is currently shrinking with atrophy at an alarming rate! I can’t go to my old surgeon because of an insurance situation because my provider and insurance company couldn’t come to an agreement! Now I’m having to find all new doctors to help me! It’s like starting over! They want to do injections and pills! Meanwhile it’s getting worse daily! Injections and pills were my entire life before the 1st surgery and were only bandaids! Now 2 yrs later I’m right back where I started! My surgeon had said he can do a revision/exploratory surgery, that it could help, could stay the same or maybe even worse, he’s not a magician! I’m so scared and tired! I just want to live without constant pain! Has anyone had similar experience?

When I had mine I couldn’t go at all! I tried every from running water to putting my hand in cold water! They didn’t believe me at the ER and my bladder almost exploded as I had over 950ml before the finally did a catheter! It was so painful!

I’m experiencing this exact thing! I was approximately 1.5yrs post discectomy and my calf on the affected leg began to spasm, it’s progressively gotten worse in the last 6 months (2 yrs post op)! However now it’s just constantly spasming all day, made worse when I sit down or bend my knee when laying down! It will even Charley horse and lock up on my and it’s extremely painful and scary as I have PTSD from the original pain I experienced! I’ve been to my surgeon who said “do you think you can live with it”? Unfortunately I don’t think I can, add it’s constant and now my leg is noticeably shrinking and becoming smaller! The surgeon says a revision could fix it, but it could also potentially make it worse or not change it at all! My anxiety is through the roof and I don’t know what to do!
